Dressing Young (Part 1)

BB, I really like the Kate Spade dress!

Like HImom, I have a dozen black pants. I wore one with a pretty top to graduation.

RE: graduation

I like the dress, Bunsen, I don’t think it really fits the model. The waist seems to be a little high for her.

Last year I purchased a cute dress for graduation. It was a simple sleeveless white sheath and I bought a blue cardigan with white polka dots to go with it in case it was a little chilly. Hah! I didn’t wear the dress to graduation. If your child is graduating from school in the northeast, have another, much warmer outfit on standby! Temp was about 56 and damp. I ended up layering pieces from all the outfits I brought so I could survive being out in the cold.

Sorry if this has been posted already, Ive been travelling…but last week I saw something on line about none other than Pippa Middleton wearing nude colored tights. Just when I got used to the bare legs with dresses thing (using my trusty fake bake)!

Regarding what to wear at graduation–I was SO glad to have worn flats at my niece’s graduation this year. Lots of trudging around from one side of campus to the other. Parking was not convenient. My sister was cursing her heels before the festivities ended; her heels got stuck in the soft (but not muddy) earth on a number of occasions. A word to the wise…

BB - I like the look of the dress - it’d depend on the fit, I think.

When my daughter graduated I wore navy linen trousers and black flats. It rained, then turned blazingly hot. The more important bits were shoes, raingear, sunglasses, and a hat. More a survival experience than a fashion high point.

Thank you, all! DH loved the dress and told me to keep it. I am a big sucker for scalloping and embroidery, and the navy detailing on this dress is very tastefully done. I also ordered an LK Bennett dress in D’s class color (on sale!), just in case (knowing my H, if the dress fits, he will tell me to keep it, too).

And many thanks to everyone on footwear and “survival” gear tips. I’ve been to 3 graduations on the West Coast, but this is going to be the first one in NE. Luckily, I’ve been to D’s campus several times, so I have some ideas about what to expect. My feet do not do well in flats, so I think my Ferragamo “queen” pumps will be my shoes of choice to wear to graduation events (thank you, Gourmetmom - these are the most comfortable pumps I’ve ever owned!).

HIMom, if you want a washable dress, l recommend dresses made of lightweight silk jersey material (DVF loves to use it in her dresses, and so does Tory Burch). I always pack my TB silk dress when we go to HI. The label might say “dry clean only”, but it is not true - I always wash my silk jersey items using the handwash cycle and dry them on a hanger or towel.

I think the dress looks graduation-y, Bunsen. In the good way.

This is more Dressing The Young than Dressing Young but I got a Daughter-Stamp-of-Approval on this ensemble I ordered her from Garnet Hill. She’s at a seminar for six weeks on a college campus and wasn’t sure what to bring with but she texted me that this is turning out to be perfect:

Sewhappy. I usually don’t care for prints, but that skirt is really cute!

It IS a cute skirt, Fallgirl. She got it in the fish print. Wears it with all sorts of tops. Usually with Converse. People always comment, she says, “Oh, little fishes on your skirt! Cute!”

And I am once again deemed the Brilliant Mom.

sewhappy, the fish print looks really cute on that skirt! Fish print must have been the “in” thing this spring- just take a look at this fish print dress. The fishes are more detailed, however, it does not have the same cuteness factor as your D’s skirt:

:)

Ahhh, it feels so great to be the Brilliant Mom, doesn’t it?

that skirt is adorable!

My Badgley Mischka shoes arrived!!! I ordered 2 pairs and they are lovely!!!

Okay. Now I get the Sperry craze. Just got these at Bloomingdales for 25 bucks and I am wearing them as I type this. So comfortable. So darling. So fun.

This Brilliant Mom will not let Darling Daughter abscond with these Sperry’s when she returns home.

Sewhappy- the shoes are cute. You would have fit in great in those shoes at the birthday party I went to this week. It definitely was a “dressing Young” crowd. The majority of the women (the party was all female) had on white pants and some form of a wedge shoe. Lots of white denim both regular length and ankle length. Mostly slim fitting. Several women, including myself wore white linen pants. It was definitely more of the trendy working out women.
The next night I went out with another group. What a contrast. Still wonderful women who are great company. But they were not the “dressing Young” group. More Tevas and Crocs. Baggy cropped pants with flowering camp style blouses.
I love both groups of women. I find I am spending more time looking at what everyone is wearing. Not to mention after the eating well threads I am paying more attention to what is being served.

Wow, there sure are a lot of interesting fashions out their. Thanks for the tip about washable dresses, BB. Will see what I can find.

What part of the country are you living?
Where I am in the Bay Area, I rarely see very many women wearing white pants.

cbreeze, thanks for the warning - we are going to SF soon, and I was planning on wearing my white pants. Now I know better. :)

Dang! Just finished combing our closest mall for something suitable to wear for a wedding shower, wedding and D’s graduation. Have not found ANYTHING! They had mostly jungle prints and lots of floaty bohemian styles. YETCH! So disappointing!

Had gone to Ross earlier with D & also not been able to find anything. The funniest thing was mom wanted me to buy the dress I had worn to shop in–she was enthusiastic & sincere in saying it was the nicest thing I tried on! Sheesh! She was right. :(

True, all the times I’ve been in the Bay Area, I’ve seen very few white slacks around.

BB, Mark’s Twain’s supposed quote about SF weather that goes: “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco …”
Dress warmly and have fun.

I am in Ca -Santa Barbara. I was actually surprised since usually everyone is wearing black pants or jeans.
