Dressing Young (Part 1)

In Northern California, where I am, we rarely wear white pants. I was telling someone this just the other day. Down on the warm Peninsula, more often than in foggy San Francisco. And it would be far more likely to see white denim than white linen. BB, if you find yourself at loose ends, ping me. Email address is on my blog:). Love to say hello. I’ve gotten much more comfortable with meeting online friends IRL these days.

Do most folks just have the dresses mailed to them & then try them on & take them back to the store if they decide not to buy or do you prefer to try them on in the store & then decide whether you want to buy & take them home? Just curious, since I so rarely shop for dresses and don’t think I’ll find what I’m looking for at Costco (which is where I buy much of my clothing).

mom60, I really like how you perfectly characterize the Dressing Young types vs the Crocs and drawstring pants types. I love both, too! I am both. Got to have both in our lives.

Cute, yes there is an abundance of camp shirt wearing, capri wearing, sneaker and Croc wearing ladies these days you see them everywhere. I have to admit it’s a step up from the track suits.

Got my Karen Millen khakis. They are what I was looking for. Very nice quality fabric. The 4 was too small, of course that means the 6 has to be too large, but I will get the waist taken in and be quite happy to finally own some dressy khakis that aren’t all stretchy or “modern” in some other unwanted way. Thank you to Bunsen Burner for the recommend.

Yay!!! Alumother, I’m happy that you liked the khakis. I’d love to get together sometime, that’s a great idea; unfortunately, DH decided to avoid SF at all costs (“last time we were there you tricked me into going shopping!”), and bought tickets to Oakland. Yay. Not. Someday, possibly next month, when hubby goes to his bosses’ lair, I will try to join him. I will send you an email.

I had an interesting conversation with a sales lady at the local Neiman. The lady told me a piece of trivia that I never thought of: department stores always place their men’s departments on the lower level, because most men are too lazy to travel a flight of stairs to look at clothes. I guess my husband is not the only guy who’s alergic to shopping. :)

Bunsenburner- my S appears to have the allergic to shopping gene. Today S, his GF and my D went downtown. His GF had never been. I guess they dragged him into H and M which had just opened. He had a meltdown. He accused them of trying to “change his style”.

Found two lovely dresses that fit–one states it is machine washable & the other is mostly polyester & unlined, so I will probably take my chances after a few wearings. It seems I’m a “Maggie London” fan, since that is the brand even my old faves are & one of the brands of my new purchases.

My family is mostly allergic to shopping as well. Oh well!

HIMom - In answer to the question you posed earlier - yes, I have ordered dresses that I saw online and if necessary mailed them back. It can be a bit of a nuisance, but it can also be well worth it. I returned the Nicole Miller dress I ordered (I was heartbroken, but didn’t have another occasion to wear it) by downloading return info on site to be included with package. It was very easy.

I bought a great Maggy London dress at Nordstrom’s Rack, with a DKNY wrap for an upcoming wedding. If I didn’t find anything while shopping, I was going to order online, try on and return. A bit more hassle, but worth it to find the right dress.

Thanks–funny thing is I can’t find the Maggy London dress I bought from Nordstrom’s Rack on-line. I think it’s quite lovely and classic; suspect I will wear it for many, many years!

I need some nice tee-shirts, basic ones with a little flair to wear with skirts and such. The “slub” look doesn’t work on me, sort of poofs out but I don’t want something form-fitting either.

Where are the good tee-shirts? I used to really like Mossimo at Target but don’t care for this season’s offerings.

Sewhappy, I think it has something to do with the prices of cotton. According to CNBC, cotton prices quadrupled (!) in the past year. Therefore, manufacturers are stuck with a dilemma: increase prices or use less/lower grade cotton. I suspect they are doing the latter. I gave up on cotton tees and bought 2 Wolford tees made of synthetic fabric. They fit like a glove and stay in place. They were very pricy even on sale, but I think I will get a lot of mileage out of them.

If you have a longer torso, cotton tees with a touch of Lycra made by ModBod are a godsend. They actually are very well made and last. Don’t expect plunging necklines, though, because “Mod” comes from “Modest”, not “Model”. :)

There some nice tops at Costco stores–mostly cotton with some lycra so that it wears longer & better than 100% cotton. They’re under $20 apiece and not too form-fitting.

Thanks, Bunsen. It’s good to know I haven’t been hallucinating the scarcity of nice cotton tops this season!

Modbod has me intrigued, especially the cap sleeve tee with the slightly deeper neckline. How would you say the sizes run?

Guess what? I own a Wolford! Bought it ten or so ago. And it would work pretty well for me this summer - simple white with a scoop neck, three-quarter sleeves, that delectable mix of lycra/cotton. I always liked that it hugs the torso just enough to show the waist. It was way in the back of my closet, forgotten during my long aversion to wearing anything white . . .

They are even more expensive now. I think I paid something like $80 for it way back when. I will look them over online and maybe splurge . . .

If you don’t have good tops your wardrobe just doesn’t work at all, I’m finding. I had bought several Ann Taylor tees last summer but the shape seems completely wrong this year and the cotton is too thick. Picky me.

I miss my daughter. Clothes aren’t any fun when she’s not here.

I am still without a new swimsuit. I was looking on zappos last night. I keep coming back to the print one pieces by Tommy Bahama. My 17 yr old told me that the prints are “old lady” or remind her of Sponge Bob. She suggested boring black.
Opinions? Links to swimsuits you have purchased this year?

OH, dear. Sponge Bob. Once those daughters say something like that, it becomes impossible to look at the item the same way.

I am going to keep that in mind. Sponge Bob.

sewhappy, I have this tshirt in 3 different colors [Lole Stretch Organic Cotton Kiss Top at 6pm.com](<a href=“Lole stretch organic cotton kiss top | 6pm”>Lole stretch organic cotton kiss top | 6pm) I just got it in pink. They fit well, they are a little dressier than plain tshirts, they wash up really nicely and they have a little stretch in them to make them not so frumpy.

I also have a shimera seamless baby tee from nordstrom. It’s made of synthetic fiber’s and I think it’s kind of like the wolford except so much cheaper. I looked on nordstrom.com and this is the one I have [Shimera Seamless Baby Tee | Nordstrom](http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/shimera-seamless-baby-tee/3198664?origin=category&resultback=2964). When I bought mine they had them in a bunch of different colors but maybe it’s out of season.

mom60, I like the bathings suits at both Title Nine and Athleta. Last year, Target had a lot of reasonably priced suits online – I haven’t looked at their selection this year.

Found a nice pair of white Elie Tahari ankle cut pants to wear to the shower this coming weekend. Slim cut through the legs and perfect to wear with my floral print wedge sandals.
