Dressing Young (Part 1)

Love the Apfel piece, Bunsen.

Cjane, I’m no expert on dressing for body shapes, still evolving on figuring out my own style. But it sounds as if you’re built a bit like Liza Minnelli or Barbra Streisand (do you by any chance sing?). Both of these women have gorgeous legs and more compressed torsos. I’ve noticed through the years that they do best when they go with shorter tops in order to really capitalize on the wonderful length of their legs. Like all of us, they’ve had their awkward fashion moments but I think the gist of their own journey is that rather than trying to disguise your less strong features, focus on really highlighting what is wonderful about you. Great legs at our age are a terrific asset. I don’t think I’d go with the longish tunics that are going to obscure those legs. Also, the skirt shape of late seems to be really high-waisted. Would that look work on you, with the belt several inches above your middle? My DD also has super long legs and she looks great in that style while I don’t – I am more long waisted.

Thanks for all the fantastic suggestions. I will post some of my potential purchases.

CJane - Yay! Vicarious shopping! My favorite kind. Also, take a look at Liberty London Girl’s blog - she’s a fashion sort who has a body sort of like yours as I understand it. She goes for dresses and boots.

just ordered this jacket- end of season clearance- hope it fits!

What do y’all think of this? And what would you wear with it? (Not for anything formal, just maybe semi-casual out to dinner kind of thing)

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/three-dots-faux-wrap-dress/3192114?origin=sbSeeColorsNViews&tn=swatch_popup</a></p>

I like that dress a lot. 3 Dots is a brand like James Perse, known for casual, but starting to use casual fabrics for more elegant pieces. And EK, Tabitha at Bourbon and Pearls is a total hoot!

D2 is 20 yrs old and wants a navy blazer to wear with jeans. She loves this one worn by Kate Middleton but doesn’t have the cash reserve to buy it.
Has anyone seen a cute substitute that is friendlier to a college budget? I don’t think she wants to go go $250.

Well, if it has Alumother’s blessing, it’s a go. Order has been placed. I will let you all know what it looks like when it gets here.
We will need to discuss shoe and jewelry options if it fits.

CJane, I’m honored. Fit will be all with that dress, I bet. Fit and your complexion tolerance for that muted shade.

I’ve been ogling the J. Crew schoolboy blazers.

[Women’s wear-to-work shop - blazers - Schoolboy blazer in navy - J.Crew](http://www.jcrew.com/womens_special_shops/weartoworkshop/blazers/PRDOVR~28233/99102054149/ENE~1+2+3+22+4294967294+20~~~0~15~all~mode+matchallany~~~~~shrunken%20jacket/28233.jsp)

I have several Three Dots jersey dresses - very comfortable and flattering. I hope the dress works for you CJane.

Love emeraldkity’s jacket - very Chanel-esque!

Wow! So much great taste here today.

Big fan of Three Dots here. I just bought a jersey skirt and love their tops. I think that dress is fantastic, Cjane.

I also just spied this in the Garnet Hill fall catalog – a top and a skirt by Eileen Fisher that have that sort of Barbra Streisand vibe I was rambling on about this morning:

[Eileen Fisher Sheer Round-Neck Boxy Sweater - Garnet Hill](http://www.garnethill.com/eileen-fisher-sheer-round-neck-boxy-sweater/womens-fashion/shop-by-brand/eileen-fisher/216647)

[Eileen Fisher Washable Crêpe Pencil Skirt](http://www.garnethill.com/eileen-fisher-washable-cr-26-23234-3bpe-pencil-skirt/womens-fashion/skirts/view-all-skirts/175436?isCrossSell=true&strategy=4)

Emerald, terrific jacket.

You can never go wrong with a timeless navy blazer. I like the length of the J crew one, not to short, not to long…can be worn forever.

Navy blazers seem to be in short supply this time of the year… I would try Theory, Alice and Olivia, and Elizabeth and James displays at big department stores.

A question: would you wear any necklace with this top? If so, what kind?

[Classiques Entier® Asymmetrical Twist Top | Nordstrom](http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/classiques-entier-asymmetrical-twist-top/3208305?origin=PredictiveSearch&resultback=4267#/BVRRWidgetID)

BunsenBurner, I would probably wear some bold dangly earrings with that and skip the necklace. It’s a beautiful top!

^I think something short and chunky would work. Large beads, or a simple chain or collar with one thing attached.

Like this: [Eccentric Necklace - Chico’s](http://www.chicos.com/store/browse/product.jsp?maxRec=121&pageId=1&productId=100040851&viewAll=true&prd=Eccentric+Necklace&subCatId=cat40076&color=&fromSearch=&inSeam=&posId=81&catId=cat40005&cat=Jewelry+Necklaces&onSale=&colorFamily=&maxPg=1&size=)

Or this: [Modera Bibb Neckalce - Chico’s](http://www.chicos.com/store/browse/product.jsp?maxRec=121&pageId=1&productId=570030972&viewAll=true&prd=Modera+Bibb+Neckalce&subCatId=cat40076&color=&fromSearch=&inSeam=&posId=21&catId=cat40005&cat=Jewelry+Necklaces&onSale=&colorFamily=&maxPg=1&size=)

I also like this: [Wysandra Short Necklace - Chico’s](http://www.chicos.com/store/browse/product.jsp?maxRec=121&pageId=1&productId=570026510&viewAll=true&prd=Wysandra+Short+Necklace&subCatId=cat40076&color=&fromSearch=&inSeam=&posId=4&catId=cat40005&cat=Jewelry+Necklaces&onSale=&colorFamily=&maxPg=1&size=)

I wouldn’t buy it on line though. I’d go to a local gallery wearing the blouse and see what looks good with it.

I agree with mousegray - it doesn’t absolutely need a necklace. Nice top!

I agree that a short, chunky, or multiple strand necklace would look nice. Depending on the skirt or slacks worn with the top, I’d opt for a necklace in a warm, dark gray silvery tone.

Alumother, I’ve been coveting this one:
[Women’s blazers & vests - schoolboy - Schoolboy blazer in academy stripe - J.Crew](http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/blazersandvests/schoolboy/PRDOVR~47635/47635.jsp)

It looks a little shorter than the one you linked to, but I’m kind of small and the “shrunken” look actually works better for my proportions.

I’ve come to the sad conclusion that many of my favorite looks: rolled up boyfriend jeans, long drapey cardigans, etc. just make me look like a little kid in my big brother’s clothes.

Thank you, CC friends! I’m a bit jewelry-challeneged  and it is great to have such wonderful help. I like the Chico’s costume “bling” in mathmom’s links (Chico’s clothes - not so much).

This RL jacket is not a one-button style, but I like how it looks:

[Lauren by Ralph Lauren “Angie” Double Cotton Jacket - Jackets & Coats - Bloomingdales.com](http://www1.bloomingdales.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=540341&CategoryID=12675)

And here is a more casual navy jacket from Tory Burch:

[seth blazer | Tory Burch](http://www.toryburch.com/Seth-Blazer/34112503,default,pd.html?dwvar_34112503_color=411&start=7&cgid=clothing-jackets-outerwear)

Brooks Brothers also has some nice navy blazers (also, check their sale section):

[Brooks Brothers | Women | Categories - Women | Jackets & Blazers](http://www.brooksbrothers.com/IWCatSectionView.process?IWAction=Load&Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=237&section_size=&section_color=Blue&sortby=)

I have no idea if this is a reputable website (there is apparently a store in CA), but the jackets look very nice:

I’ve never shopped at Chico’s but the jewelry came up on a google search. I like the boyfriend blazer and the one Emeraldkity linked to. This one made me laugh: [Piped Lennox Blazer - Chico’s](http://www.chicos.com/store/browse/product.jsp?maxRec=77&pageId=1&productId=570029006&viewAll=&prd=Piped+Lennox+Blazer&subCatId=&color=&fromSearch=&inSeam=&posId=2&catId=cat40001&cat=Jackets++Coats&onSale=&colorFamily=&maxPg=5&size=) it’s like my high school uniform blazer on steroids.
