Dressing Young (Part 1)

Three Dots dress arrived. As I do so often, ordered it too big :frowning: I think I like it, so hoping the new size will be the ticket.

Love, love the Audra dress!

Some nice ideas here.
A bit depressed here cause a guy at work guessed my age at 55…three full years older than I am. Yikes! What an awful reality check. So I guess I need to dress younger. (thought I was!) …or at least get some new face cream :(

momofthreeboys - Thank you! I hung it OUTSIDE my closet door so I could look at it:). What! It’s art, no?

Toneranger - Oh gosh no! Guys are wholly clueless about that stuff.

toneranger: if the guy is way younger than you are, discount it altogether.

I think they categorize: Sort of my age, younger than I am, older than I am.

toneranger: if the guy is way younger than you are, discount it altogether.

Totally… I had a young man, ( 23) guess I was in my late 50’s early 60’s, traumatized me cause I was getting ready to go on stage & sing!
( I am in my early 50’s and * thought* I looked younger)
He had insisted on guessing my age- apparently because I guessed his accurately. It wasn’t too hard, I just picked a number in-between my daughters ages.

I also had my hennaed hair go natural ( lightish red blonde- it used to be darker) & I think it made me look older- so a week after that I started coloring it again!

OR get a new co-worker

Has anyone tried Gentle Souls shoes? Ran across them on the Garnet Hill and Nordstrom websites. I’m researching comfortable but stylish shoes. These tend to run about $200 a pair. Am willing to invest the money but wanted some trusted opinions before taking the plunge.

Also, tried on an Eileen Fisher crepe pencil skirt today. Really liked it except I’m between sizes. Would probably go with the larger size but have never bought this brand although this is definitely a style I would wear a lot. The skirt was $158 and unlined. $158 seems a little high for an unlined skirt. I know there are EF fans on this thread. Do you think her clothes hold up well?

Thanks.

MomLive, only your feet will be able to tell you if they like this brand of shoes or not. Since Nordstrom offers free shipping both ways, I’d order a pair or two and see how they fit. Re: skirt. I like EF fabrics a lot, and they seem to be very durable. At least the pieces I’ve bought in the past are holding up well.

I’m very proud of myself! I went to the FNO at the Bravern and did not buy anything except a Nubra that I desperately needed. I missed the big runway show at Neiman because my departure to the show was derailed by a water leak in the garage. After fixing that, I only had an hour to hang out at the mall prior to going to the airport to pick up H. My oh my, I’ve never thought that the PNW crowd can dress so stylishly! Everyone seemed to pull some nice clothes out of their closet for the occasion, and there were some tuly amazingly dressed people in the crowd (and, of course, some shorts/fleece types sprinkled in). The scarf tying demo at the Hermes store was totally great: the ladies who work there can whip up amazing knots in a couple of seconds! I’m not sure I can remember all of the “lessons”, so I will have to come back for a “private lesson”. The Tory Burch store was BUSY. Part of the reason was that they served gigantic cups of wine, but provided no easily locatable trashcans. Just like many others, I tried to get out of the store to throw the unfinished cup of wine in the garbage only to be reminded that in my state alcohol is not allowed outside of buildings. Apparently, one cannot sip a beer on her front porch either, but who cares :)) So unable to ditch the evil liquid, I slowly finished my wine while checking everything that the store had to offer. One of the sales associates was wearing Alumother’s dress. It looked amazing IRL. No wonder the store was out of this style!

Hey guys…you made me feel better. He IS a LOT younger…early thirties. Clueless. A nice guy I work with a lot and joke with. Actually feels bad about it at this point LOL. Still stings though.
Exact words…
“So my mom is 57 - just a couple years older than you”.
Me “Huh?”
“Well, your 55 right…isn’t that what you told me?”
Me: “You are so deep in a hole buddy…I can’t even see you”

Still gonna look for a new face cream though…

Momlive,

Yes to both Gentle Souls and Eileen Fisher. The shoes are great-- they are lined with the softest leather and have the most amazing padding inside. Very well made and are stylish too. I have several pairs, both dressy and casual.

As for Eileen Fisher, I am also a fan, but I think you need to be selective, as some of her stuff can look shapeless and frumpy, while other pieces are more stylish with a kind of boho sensibility. I am familiar with the crepe material and it holds up well, washable, no need for a lining, IMO. The stuff isn’t cheap, but mostly worth it, I think.

Bunsen - Now I kind of wish I’d gone to our FNO at the Stanford Shopping Center:). Sounds like fun. I love events where everyone dresses up. And I get such a kick out of you calling the Audra dress “Alumother’s.” Sort of how I feel when I see the Ferragamos you wear, or thinking of sewhappy as a page through the Garnet Hill catalog:). Populating the world of style with CC buddies.

As for Eileen Fisher, I own a linen shirtdress of hers, reasonably well made. I don’t have any of the knit pieces, but many of my blog buddies love her. Deja Pseu at Une Femme D’Un Certain Age has done a lot of posts about EF pieces.

Have a nice weekend everyone.

Totally agree. It reminds me of the JJill and Chico lines. I have some wonderful pieces from both stores but I couldn’t dress exclusively in either line. Some of it works for me, some of it is too shapeless to be flattering on my figure.

Love the Une Femme D’Un Certain Age blog, Alumother.

Anyone have the perception that jjill has gone downhill over the past couple of years? Used to find all kinds of unique and stylish things in that catalogue and often used to feel like I wanted to buy everything-- now, it all looks shapeless and boring and there is NOTHING I want. Frump city. What happened?

momoschki- I agree. I used to always stop at J Jill when I went to visit my Mom a few hours away from my home. I would find quite a few things I loved. Fast forward to the present. I now have a J Jill store 10 minutes from my house and I rarely find anything there that I want to even try on.

MomLive - Oh, glad you like Une Femme. I’ve met her, and we correspond. She’s a woman of real substance, a keeper. Ties a mean scarf too:).

J.Jill does seem very hit and miss lately. When the summer clothes arrived, I went to buy some shorts, as my favorites are looking a bit worn. They changed the cut/length, not something I could wear. I did buy a knit dress. Looks good on me and can be appropriate for a variety of casual events. Fall catalog has arrived, nothing too interesting.

I agree about JJill, haven’t bought anything for quite a few years now. I’m one who has a few select pieces of Eileen Fisher but couldn’t build a wardrobe around Eileen Fisher. I find it interesting because a decade or two or three ago you could “count” on certain off the rack labels or store brands and now it all feels hit or miss. I could probably name the brands I wore consistently by decade and now it’s just a moshpit and I pick things more by style and look and fit than by the name on the brand and the brands with some exclusions are consistent anymore.

Regarding counting on brands. I used to love Lucky brand jeans. The denim and fit were great. The last few years the quality of the denim has changed and I don’t think the cuts are as well done. I think what happens is that a brand gets sold and the quality and styling eventually change. I loved Lucky when it was a n independent brand. The store was fun to visit and the designs were great. Now I rarely go in.

Nail polish: I have regular pedicures but rarely color my fingernails. Today I used a dark taupe polish on my fingers for fun (and to cover an injury to my thumb nail): OPI “a Taupe the Space Needle.” My toe nails are still a deep brown/red.

What’s the rule of thumb (haha!) for relating polish colors from hand to foot?
