Yes, capes look great on runways, but I cannot imagine myself wearing one. I would look ridiculous running after a bus in a cape.
LOL.

Sewhappy, that wrap looks wonderful.

BB - You and I are about the same size I think. I have found that when wearing a longer skirt, I want either a long coat OR I also like the look of a shorter, car coat length.

[Fleurette Cashmere Car Coat | Nordstrom](http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/fleurette-cashmere-car-coat/3171391?origin=category&resultback=3496)

I do love this brand.

I love the car coat length. On the other hand, in California, it’s rarely cold enough for full length, and we are often in the car, so my liking is probably context-sensitive.

That’s quite attractive, sewhappy.

I got a cape for the fall that I am pleased with - but it’s short sleeves and you can let a contrasting color from a turtleneck pop out. It’s cut more close to the body, like a topper, which saves it from the mounds of billowing fabric look.

I also love your wrap, sewhappy. It would be perfect for a day like today in PA.

I just love coats. Since I am on a limited budget (DH and I are truly earning disabled), I will splurge on items that endure, i.e. coats, boots, etc., and I carefully choose lower ticket clothing for single use items, such as a dress for a special event. I bought a coat the first year out of grad school ('77) that still looks amazing and was probably my smartest investment. At the time it was on sale at Bloomies and still cost approximately one month’s salary.

They say a girl can never have too much outerwear.

I love the look of long wool coats and once bought one but have not worn it much. Very uncomfortable in the car and heavy to bring on a train or plane. Have been thinking of looking for a long sleek parka coat, not too poofy and slim cut.

Sewhappy - when you find one (a long sleek parka coat) be sure to post it! I have one that I thought was okay when I bought it, but it was really a matter of needing something super warm and convincing myself it would be okay. It’s not. I saw a picture of myself in it and I look poofy!

As someone who needs a coat most of the year I have to say I never wear one in the car. Ladies…that’s what electric starts are for!
Seriously, I also start the car before I leave and never wear a coat in the car. You have to warm the car before you step out in -20 degree weather! ;)

Actually, my dream coat would be one of those that is sort of water repellant on the outside and furry on the inside, with the pretty collar that folds down and shows the fur. My mom had one a gazillion years ago, very politically incorrect made of seal, the skin was on the outside and the fur on the inside. Or at least that’s how she wore it. Oh my. I hope I don’t get flamed over that. It was absolutely lush. I used to go stand in the coat closet and just wrap my arms around it. No idea what became of it . . .

Anyway, I’d like one of those, faux fur of course. Is there a name for that type of coat? I see it in a chocolate brown.

I have this coat:

[Prada - Fur-Trimmed Down Jacket/Blue Fox - Saks.com](<a href=“http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?PRODUCT<>prd_id=845524446368525&afsrc=1&site_refer=GGLPRADS001&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=8034101252473&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw={keyword}]Prada”>http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?PRODUCT<>prd_id=845524446368525&afsrc=1&site_refer=GGLPRADS001&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=8034101252473&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw={keyword})

It’s very sleek and not puffy, but warm - I detached the collar, so it’s quite plain at the neck.

A lower price point alternative is made by North Face - I checked online but right now only the puffier styles are displayed. My friend has a very sleek, belted knee length coat by North Face that is very flattering. I’ll post a picture when I can find one.

I dream of a Loro Piana cashmere cape, but it’s difficult to justify the price when I’d probably only wear it a few times in the fall. Actually, I think capes look particularly nice on older ladies - perhaps I’m way too young to pull it off right now:)

You know I think you’re right. Older women might be more likely to pull off a cape.

What is a ruana? I think this is really yum :

[Burberry Mega Check Merino Wool & Cashmere Ruana | Nordstrom](http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/burberry-mega-check-merino-wool-cashmere-ruana/3201473?origin=category&resultback=46)

Yep, that’s the one I was looking at before in my post to BB. I love that. I think of that as a shawl, something with a little more structure as a cape.

Gourmetmom - I really love that cape, and no I don’t think you need to be older. It would depend what you would wear with it. I was in my late twenties when I had my camel cape, it was luxurious and I wore it frequently with split skirts (I think we called them gauchos) and boots. Carrying a bag was tricky. A nice clutch would work, but anything else was a nuisance.

I would love to buy this coat

[Cinzia Due Ruched Collar Coat - Coats & Jackets - Bloomingdales.com](http://www1.bloomingdales.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=561185&CategoryID=5584&LinkType=#fn%3Dspp%3D86)

I am thinking you must be mighty slim, Gmom! The Prada coat is lovely, but I still think I would look poofy!

Love the Cinzia Due red coat, workinprogress. Gorgeous.

Didn’t Doris Day wear some capes? With gloves and a pillbox hat and a big purse that snapped? Not making fun. I adore Doris Day style.

In Bunsen’s search for a coat to wear with longer skirts, I think this would be terrific

Actually, I have a coat that is almost identical to the long black with the trim. I do love Fleurette.

All pretty - I especially like the red coat because it would look wonderful with gray and black. It’s nice to see bright colors on cold, drab winter days.

Ahh, love the red coat! I’m all over Yoox - there are some *seriously cute *coats on there.

wnp, if you happen to be anywhere where there is a Geox store, check their puffer coats. They look similar to the Prada coat, cost under $300, are fitted at the waist, breathable (like most of Geox stuff), and are not bulky at all. I cannot post a link to the one I bought in Germany because Geox’s website is a mess, but it looks similar to these, just longer:

This has been the IT down coat for casual, everyday wear around here for the past few years. It may be considered a puffer, but it is lightweight and surprisingly flattering and sleek looking on. It’s also very warm. The only problem is that every other person seems to have it.

It is bookmarked - until the December sales. Please keep your fingers crossed that the size 6 does not sell out by then. :)

wnp, here in my neck of the woods, Patagonia is beating the down out of North Face when it comes to popularity! Some of their quilted down coats are amazingly lightweight yet super warm. Here is one example:
