Dressing Young (Part 1)

Nordstrom Rack

BB - Now that’s a choice to have to make:). I completely agree on the BB fake pearls. I like their more fanciful stuff. And while I will wear jeans to work, for festive occasions it IS about honoring just that, the occasion.

Jeans to a wedding? :(

Heck, even my D went shopping to get a nice dress (tho she rarely wears dresses) for a wedding she attended last summer. She didn’t have anything suitable–left all her nice clothes at school.

Tho HI is pretty casual, even we try to be a bit more festive for weddings, in general. Even the wedding I performed on the beach, no one wore jeans.

Funerals on the other hand can be more casual and are very large affairs.

Ooops, soory, I did not mean to be so cryptic. NR = Nordsrom Rack. I love the Tory pants. I have a feeling that I will hoard them both.

Speaking of Costco cashmere, our Costco had a pile of Kirkland Signature cable knit V-neck *Italian-made *sweaters selling for $109, but their quality was not as great as the quality of the road show pieces.

Went back to my Costco yesterday, and the stock of the cashmere road show has been replenished. I got the Italian-made boyfriend cardigan with pockets in black and it is great! It’s very thick cashmere, probably twice as thick as any other cashmere I have. Very nice and should last a long time, a classic piece.

Must. Get. To. Costco.

I have a beautiful lilac, drape-neck cashmere sweater from Costco that I got last year for under $60. It’s one of the most elegant pieces I have to wear to work in the winter. I should have gotten it in a couple of other colors too!

yes, jeans to a wedding! Last year my nephew was married in a small ceremony at a small church, and his stepdad wore a white tshirt, a jacket, and jeans! The wedding I attended last Friday evening had several people wearing dark jeans and a jacket.

I’m a jeans person myself, but it has just been ingrained in me to provide respect for the occasion and dress accordingly. I guess that is ‘old school’ these days.

I finally bought a new pair of boots!
It has been a hard decision because I had to keep in mind my budget, my weird feet ( high arch, narrow heel, widish forefoot), & the weather. ( rain & lots of it).

They are a tad more casual than I was looking for, but still stylish, comfortable & waterproof.
Plus, I didn’t have to buy two different sizes from Zappos, but found them at a local shoe store so I could use my Chinook book coupon. ( & bought 1/2 size down)

[Merrell | Store | Tetra Strap Waterproof](http://www.merrell.com/US/en-US/Product.mvc.aspx/22915W/50542/Womens/Tetra-Strap-Waterproof)

They were actually lighter than I wanted but darkened up nicely once I put more waterproofing on.

EK - so body-type wise we are nothing alike, but you could shop for shoes & boots for me!

Even if the size is different, the proportions are the same, so I would just adjust accordingly. Sometimes I end up buying shoes a half size larger just to accommodate my the front of my feet, but then my heels come out!

I want a pair of boots in that color, but I want a low heel. Would you get working on that for me??

Just kidding :)

Okay, I am late to the party in this thread, but have a question. Why the no Made in China clothes? I know many people are afraid to use dishes/cookware etc from China, is it a safety worry about clothes from China too? Or is there some sort of child labor issue specifically?

Oh and I totally do not get JEANS at a wedding. Or funeral. If you can’t dress up for those occasions, when would you dress up?

emerald! Love, love, love the boots!

And a high arch girl here with toes permanently scarred by too many years in toe shoes. So I need a wide toe. I love the little pull-up straps. I love the color. And the price is reasonable. Also, really like the wide heel. It’s not the heel height that trips me up, it’s the width of that heel.

EK: great boots. They are supposed to be waterproof - a huge plus for our winters. :)

Oh, no, no - no specific safety concerns or calls for boycotts. I’m simply running a small personal experiment trying to see if a US family can survive a year without buyng any products made in China. So far, so good. It does take more time and effort to shop and research anything I want to buy, but it has been quite an educational experience, and I’m able to save a bundle of $$ because it reduces the number of impulse purchases.

emerald- I have the same type of foot and have a hard time finding shoes that fit that either have a back or don’t lace. I like the boot but not sure what to wear it with. My problem with most boots is my heel moves up and down. If I have a sock on it ends up at my foot or I end up with blisters on my heels.
I don’t wear skirts or dresses. 90% of the time I am in jeans. In summer it is easy. I have sandals that fit and pair of flats that actually fit halfway decent. I also have summer sandals with a small heel for dressy occasions. My dilemma is winter. I don’t want to be that older woman wearing running shoes with jeans. I have a cute pair of puma running shoes that are not really running shoes that go with jeans. I have Ugg boots but that is not styling. Most flats look silly with socks and my feet get cold. I don’t see myself wearing boots outside of the jeans. Would those merrill boots work under the leg of jeans? What do most of you wear with jeans in the winter. Granted my winter is not the winter most of you have. My winter means that my feet get cold in sandals.

Mom60 - ah, try as we might to avoid this fate, we do seem to turn into our mothers. A week ago I spent a day with my mom trying on TONS of shoes. Different styles, different sizes, different brands. It is a foreshadowing of a day when my daughter will be helping me find shoes that are comfortable.

Anyway - back to your question. I have two pairs of dansko that I wear with boot cut jeans. People think I am wearing boots, but I am not.
I do wear real boots, a pair of Ralph Lauren with a similar height heel, an over the knee type that can be folded down. I like them with skinny jeans.

I also occasionally wear heels with my jeans - but only for going out to dinner or somewhere when I will not be on my feet the whole time.

The Dansko are by far the most comfortable. Great arch support, nice toebox, and they look nice with jeans.

And I do not wear jeans to weddings.

Thank you, wnp, for perfectly capturing the brilliance of Dansko, especially in winter, imo. I love that they are intended to fit loose and therefore one can wear fun accent socks that peep out below the hem of the jeans. I’ve never gotten a wet foot wearing Danskos in all kinds of bad weather. And I’ve never fallen in them.

At the moment, I’m partial to a new Dansko acquisition in a burgundy color that seems to go with everything, especially well with jeans.

My D has the same problem. I can’t tell you how many pairs of shoes I have bought for her that I end up with because her foot seems impossible to fit. She has never found a pair of pumps that don’t hurt her feet. She is a singer so fortunately she can wear character pumps with straps because the straps keep them from slipping on her heel. She rode horses most of her life and she found Ariat boots, both tall and short, to be comfortable. She has a pair of North Face winter boots and a pair of Johnston & Murphy dress boots that are comfortable and other than that, she wears Merrill clogs with socks for winter. Even ballet type flats hurt her heels.

I wear ankle boots with jeans in winter. Oh yes, I also wear Dansko’s in the winter with jeans.

I generally find flats very uncomfortable. My weird feet require at least a tiny built in wedge heel. Sadly, Dansko shoes that everyone is raving about do not work for me. Neither do Cole Haans. :(

Bunsen - well, don’t be too disappointed. Dansko aren’t really fashion statements - they are just a way to look somewhat presentable when you have touchy feet. I tried on Munros the other day and they seemed to fit fairly well. I also do better with a small heel rather than flats. This foot thing is discouraging. I NEVER had any problems with my feet until about five years ago. Ah genetics, I better start marking down brands that work well for my 82 year old mom.

I did send a pair of Mary Jane Danskos to my DD who is doing an alternative teaching/masters program. I thought she might turn her nose up and declare them old lady shoes, but she says they are awesome for standing all day.
