How fun to see a Dressing Young item IRL! Dressing Young Out And About, if you will:).

Just catching up on this thread…great stuff! I have to admit I am very envious of those of you who can wear those cool high heels and wedges…I’m almost 6 feet tall and I stay with kitten heels and flats. Boring. Hubby dear doesn’t want a gal towering over him. The guys at work don’t like it either. Maybe in my next life…
Anyway, great ideas from this thread. Warm weather is here to stay and I miss my tights and boots! Need to get used to the idea of showing my bare legs…not easy.
Do most of you use some self tanning stuff before you show your legs in the spring? Mine are as white as ghosts…

Personally, I wear slacks much of the time, even tho it’s nice & warm here nearly all the time. It just seems a lot more versatile and I love that they come with POCKETS! I wish more women’s clothes had SERVICABLE pockets instead of these silly shallow pockets that are just stylish but not functional!

I have never liked heels and wedges–don’t have sturdy enough ankles and like my feet and back too much to bother with things that could endanger them. Wore improperly fitting shoes once for two days many decades ago and could barely walk for two weeks then had to wear orthopedic shoes for another two years! Have definitely pledged NEVER to buy shoes that I can’t wear in total comfort for many hours at a time again.

toneranger,

I’m always really challenged by revealing my super pale legs when the warm season arrives. I don’t like self-tanners. I just don’t have the patience to use them daily and they always look orange on me. I found this Nars product last summer, which is a tinted body moisturizer, that I find works quite well – and just showers off. Am planning to use it again this season.

HImom - I avoid high heels but like a slight lift. Bjorn, Cole-Haan and even Dansko put out nice looking shoes that give a lot of stability.

I don’t know if they would work in real life… but I am absolutely loving these shoes, mainly because usually everything in the magazines is a trend I’ve worn two or three times already.

Do they have any historical precedent? Anyone know?

I like them for graduation with a very simple knee length sheath dress and matching coat. :)

The historical precedent those call to mind is a statue of winged Mercury: http://s9.thisnext.com/media/largest_dimension/214C14EA.jpg

^ I think if I wore those my family might finally make good on their threats to commit me.

I do love reading this thread! I do have a question for all of you fashion forward always-seem-to-know-just-what-to-wear gals…

I’m a west coast mom who leans to the casual and just joined the Parent Board at D2’s east coast small liberal arts college. I struggled with what to wear to my first set of meetings (business casual) and, while I did dress ‘fine’ many of the women were wearing skirts and dresses (to my pants, shirts and long cardigans). What kept me from bringing my skirts/dresses is that, unless it’s summer and I’m wearing sandals, I wear heels with them. Well, parking farther away and walking around a campus, along the grass, etc. I definitely wanted flats. Somehow wearing flats with a skirt or dress (other than sandals) makes me feel rather dumpy…however, none of these women looked dumpy in their (mostly) ballet-type shoes. Are there any rules or guidelines for flats with skirts/dresses? I’m also only 5’3" but on the top heavy side so I guess there’s something about proportions too…and maybe something to do with skirt length…? Any suggestions for me?

Do you wear flats with skirts or dresses? What do you look for?

I wear flats with pencil skirts but not with A-line or fuller cut skirts. I’m 5’3". I think flats look best with a skinnier bottom like leggings, skinny jeans or a narrow skirt. For a fuller skirt I wear either a wedge heel or a kitten heel when I know I need to do some walking.

Frankly Collage1, I’m guessing the Parent Board could use a bit of your casual west coast attitude. Be yourself! Having the ‘freedom’ to relax a bit is sometimes enviable, you know. Maybe they just need somebody to be courageous enough to give them a ‘kick start’…

I remember being SO glad I wore flats (with ankle pants) to graduation. It had rained the night before–poured in fact–their wonderfully sunny commencement ceremonies. Multiple moms got ‘stuck’ in the mud because they were so driven to wear heels!

Do city commuters still wear flats on the commute and change into heels upon arrival at the office? I’d think campus tours, etc might be similar…

I wear flats 95% of the time. I just don’t like heels beyond about a one inch and I only wear those to weddings. I think nice slacks is a good look.

I like a little lift whether I’m in jeans, pants or skirts so I look for Danskos, Cole Haan/Nike Air, Bjorn and lately Kork-Ease that provide a really stable platform at maybe an inch or so of height. I actually find these types of shoes more comfortable for long walks than flats, especially the Danskos which you will see on doctors and nurses in hospitals where they are on their feet for long stretches.

I moved to the Northeast in 2010 and also noticed the slightly more formal style - when you go to an event people tend to dress up a bit. At first I was thrown but now I love it! Clothes are clothes. Dresses and skirts are every bit as comfortable as jeans so long as you find the right fit.

What a credit to you to be asked to join the parental board at your child’s college. Congratulations!

collage1: how about flat boots with a skirt or dress for your college meetings? I don’t wear heels at all, but I love my boots! I have several pairs of boots that work well with skirts. My black knee-high boots I got this past winter are completely comfortable; I could walk all day in them.

I haven’t been on this site for a couple of days. I did decide to wear the ikat skirt for graduation. I tried it with the button front shirt but it wasn’t right for me. I don’t think I look good in a button front shirt. I also tried a draped neck elbow length shirt and liked that much better. It was the right shirt for the skirt for me. I will wear it with silver flat sandals which looked great or I have a pair of gold and taupe ballet flats which also looked good.

I’m pretty happy with this ensemble. It was the right mix of dressy and casual. Perfect for graduation and the garden party I need to attend.

Macy’s is having a friends and family April 25-30. It is one of the rare sales where you can use the coupon on almost everything including the designer stuff. Promo code online is Friend.

Thank you for the responses about flats with skirts/dresses! I have a fair number of A-lines and I think that’s where I’ve not cared for the look so, MomLive, your suggestion to try straight skirts might be just the thing!

Bookiemom, I struggle with boots too (maybe I’ll post that problem next!!)…I have great just-below-the-knee boots I wear with straight leg jeans/pants but they seem too clunky for skirts. Also, since it’s spring and the sun was shining, I thought boots might be too winter-y.

Will definitely keep my more casual style beil1958–thanks for the encouragement and, sewhappy, thanks for the kind words.

The Parent Board next meets in the fall…all food for thought over the next few months til I need to decide what to wear again!

Do you agree that calf hair shoes are for fall/winter as opposed to spring/summer? What about suede? I’ve noticed some spring-colored suede shoes lately–seems confusing!

I think spring colored suede shoes are fun - but not something that would get a lot of wear. If I had a pair I would use them on a today like today - end of April, but still pretty cold out. They are also a standout item - one that people would notice, so even if the weather were right for using them I wouldn’t wear them more than once a week or so. I wouldn’t want to be identified as “that women who always wears those cute pink shoes.” Since I have a modest budget for clothing - I would only buy a pair that were on sale (like my cute leopard/black Munro flats).

What would be the advice for shoes with a white knee length sleeveless dress (Boden) to wear to one’s graduation? They must wear white under the gown. What shoe color? Surely not white! DD is tall and does not like high heels. I think a turquoise sandal and she thinks something white. This is such a BIG DECISION!! (Isn’t it great to have fashion to focus on when life gets complicated?)

Sewhappy, a pair of white/turquoise sandals would seem like a good compromise. I actually like your color choice, unless it totally clashes with the gown color.
