This is my D who never wears anything but jeans and white t shirts, granted the jeans have to be designer and her favorite t shirt designer is Spendid.

I’m curious how many on this thread have daughters. I think having my daughter keeps me interested in fashion and stretches me a little bit out of my fashion sleepwalking.

My own DD and I share a really big interest in fashion. We bond over it quite a bit. Does that make us shallow? I don’t think so. She (and I) just see fashion as interesting and sort of sociological to follow.

D took over retooling my wardrobe a few years back. She wouldn’t let me buy anything from Ann Taylor. She’d look at my outfit and say “you’re wearing that?” A little harsh, but she has a good eye and she’s always put together. She talked me into buying more things at J. Crew. Once, a sweater I’d just bought went to high school the next day…before I even had a chance to wear it! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

I do think mothers and daughters spend bonding time cruising the mall, going into stores, trying things on, making suggestions.

I think you’d find you could go into Ann Taylor these days blind folded and think you were in J.Crew. Personally, I’m not sure that’s a good thing but AT definitely took a page from J. Crew’s playbook.

Mom of daughter here. I ask D for her input when I need someone to be brutally honest. Brutally honest.

D and I have different coloring and body types (not to mention the age gap) so we do not gravitate towards the same clothing. I can’t say that we bond over fashion, but we do bond when she comes home and we go shopping together - as in, mom makes a couple of purchases for D!!!

Sewhappy - D and I have our own “shallow” interests. I think it is really important to have some areas that are totally removed from what they are doing, or studying, etc. Just frivolous matters that you can chat about when things are stressful.

Sewhappy- I do think being a Mom of girls helps keep me fashionably young. I have several friends who have only boys or no children and I find they dress “older” or more conservatively some might even be frumpy. Where I really notice this is in length of dresses and skirts and also in choice of jean style and waist. Granted I have a couple of friends of only males and they are up to date on fashion trends and extremely stylish.

I enjoy shopping with my D’s but like worknprogress2 the D’s like the bonding best when the focus is on them. My younger D loves my J Crew purchases that I have made of the past yr.
We have an Ulta now in our town. D and I had never been in one before. We spent a good hour bonding over nail polish color and skin care items. We don’t use or wear the same stuff but it is fun.
My S and H hate shopping. For them it is a chore not a pleasure.

Mom of boys, I’m sure a girl would keep me better aware of styles. I was never much of a fashionista, but don’t mind looking good and have to look reasonably professional/artsy some of the time. I used to read Cathy to find out what the current weird fashions were.

My daughter actually doesn’t care much about fashion. We bond over career planning:). My son has gotten interested, but it’s hipster fashion, so I can’t always help. I got the bug from my mom, however, so I’d have to say it can happen…

My younger D has a great sense of style, but not a lot of money so she mostly shops at used clothing stores. She doesn’t usually make comments about what I wear, but I do pay close attention when she says something looks good.
Older D has never been that interested in clothes, she is very petite, but busty so very hard to fit. I will occasionally find things I think will work for her and she wears them, whereas I would *never *attempt to predict what younger D would like.

I was always the Talbots/Lands End type but then along came my DD. She was always the little girl who did not understand why she couldn’t wear her frilliest laciest dress every day all day. After awhile I gave in and let her. It’s been huge fun. She leaves for college tomorrow. So hard!

Sewhappy - hugs!!! I know what you are talking about. I hope you will have many shopping bonding opportunities with your daughter during her school breaks.

Our two young ladies are very career oriented, but are also interested in the latest trends, follow fashion news, although not religiously, and will never pass a pair of Jimmy Choos on sale. Shopping is always great when someone who can make fun of outrageous designer duds joins me at the mall :)

I had such fun dressing older D when she was small. She was right out of the Hanna Andersson catalog with her blonde bob.
Younger D was much more particular about clothes and would wear the exact same thing for a year. It was all about how they felt for her, although it took a while for her to settle on what the preferred outfit would be, which left me running all over the state to try & find a duplicate pair of leaf print leggings from The Gap. She still seems to wear a " uniform" much of the time. For the past few years it has been a flannel shirt with a tee and jeans. ( the flannel shirt is fitted & brightly colored & the jeans are high end)
Since she has been having trouble with yeast nfections though I have been trying to impress upon her the importance of wearing them a little looser.

Looking for advice: I have been living in my birkenstock sandals all summer. Oh my feet have been so happy. Now, its time to go back to school (I work as a teacher in an elementary school). I can’t wear my birkenstocks. I need something more professional. I love comfort, but I don’t want to be dowdy or hippy. I want flats that are pretty, interesting and most of all comfortable. Any suggestions?

chinablue, is there a specific price range you have in mind? It would help us to narrow down the choices.

I am thinking of under $150. I want to be able to wear them with skirts, dresses and pants.

Ecco makes very comfortable, high quality flats:

[ECCO ‘Kelly’ Ballet Flat | Nordstrom](http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/ecco-kelly-ballet-flat/3234571?origin=keywordsearch&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=INDIGO&resultback=634)

[ECCO ‘Mary’ Ballerina Flat | Nordstrom](http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/ecco-mary-ballerina-flat/3339478?origin=keywordsearch&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=634)

^^Great choices, Gourmetmom. When my feet swelled unexpectedly after the long flight to Europe last summer, I headed for the nearest Ecco store, and my wallet became a bit thinner, but my feet were happy again!

I find truly flat flats really uncomfortable; my flats have to have some sort of a built-in heel, like this great pair:

Geox also makes very stylish, breathable and comfy shoes, but they tend to be on the narrower side, like these:

[Geox Donna Lola 47 Aquamarine - Zappos.com Free Shipping BOTH Ways](<a href=“Geox donna lola 47 aquamarine geox + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com”>No results for Geox donna lola 47 aquamarine | Zappos.com)

You might want to expand your serach beyond just flats, since there are comfortable shoe options with low heels. If you can find Naot, Anyi Lu or Paul Green shoes on sale, those are always a great deal. Rockport is another brand that has a few flats with a built in mini-heel, like this one: [Rockport Faye Embroidered Flat Black - Zappos.com Free Shipping BOTH Ways](<a href=“Rockport faye embroidered flat black rockport + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com”>Rockport faye embroidered flat black + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com)

Another brand of comfortables shoes is: Munro, and they are also Made in America. They tend to be pretty pricey, but I just bought my second pair on sale…from @179 to @119.

I notice that as I get older I need to be pickier to what I wear for shoes. I would rather spend the money and get really comfortable, quality shoes. I seem to do that with clothes more now too. Trying to get better quality all around and buying on sale!

I got this dress yesterday for my birthday. [3/4 Sleeve Shorty Wrap Dress Solid - Salaam Clothing](http://www.salaamclothing.com/shop/dresses/19-3-4-sleeve-shorty-wrap-dress-solid.html) I thought it was very flattering. It’s in a slightly heathery olive green and looks like you can dress it up or down. Any suggestions?

Last spring I dropped some weight. I slowly worked my way through my stored clothes (all the things we store when they don’t fit, or at least I do). I didn’t want to buy anything new until I was fairly certain where my final weight was going to settle. I’m pretty sure I’m there and all my pants/jeans are bootcut…cute, but not up to date or what I want every day. So, yesterday I treated myself to a new pair of J Crew matchstick jeans. I was surprised when at 5’6" I needed a short, but to wear with flats it’s def the right length. I was coveting a pair of powder blue cords but I’ll wait.

I love wrap dresses mathmom, I think they’re so flattering! Happy birthday! :)
