Opinions please. I have a gray knee-length cashmere sweater dress. I am 58, 5’4", very slim. Can I get away with purple opaque tights to add a little color, or would I invite stares? Be brutal. Thanks.

I not sure and not the person to ask about the cashmere dress. I guess if I wanted to add color I like to add color around my face, with a colorful scarf. I’m really short though and think that colored tights would make me look shorter.

I ordered these shoes today [Black Suede Women’s Desert Wedges | TOMS.com](http://www.toms.com/womens/wedges/black-suede-women-s-desert-wedges). Sometimes I wonder what is wrong with me, I seem to be channeling my inner college girl.

Purple tights wouldn’t bother me: [{cute day}: purple tights](http://www.haveacuteday.com/2009/11/purple-tights.html)

I take it back. I like those purple tights mathmom, very cute.

I also ordered this [Lole Calm Dress - Free Shipping at REI.com](http://www.rei.com/product/819789/lole-calm-dress). I saw it in person and it looked really comfy, used my 20% off coupon.

Depending on the color of the grey, (is it a charcoal, dove, or a “green/grey”), a nice deep jewel color purple, wine, royal blue or even a brown should look great.

I think patterned tights with some gray in them might be easier to pull off.
I kind of like these, but it would depend on the dress.

Grey can be a hard color to wear next to your face, what about a scarf or jewelry to jazz it up?

Voting yes on purple tights if worn with black boots.

I’m known to wear burgundy colored tights with my grey cashmere sweater dresses, so I’ll add my voice to the yes crowd. Purple, especially deeper, darker purple seems to be the “in” color this fall. Who says a 58 yr young lady cannot be trendy?
Add a pair of black or dark charcoal suede boots (as our fashion guru Alumother mentioned!), maybe a scarf, and you will look fabulous.

Go for it! --Another vote for purple tights.

Alumother, you always have good ideas! Can you elaborate on your black boots idea? Would flats work with such an outfit?

I personally think black flats or short booties should be fine as well.

Apparently, some Polyvore fans think flats are fine with similar combinations:

(Oh, my! I just noticed this collection. LOL. Showing off her school pride? :)

Thanks everybody. I don’t own boots, but was planning on black shoes, either heels or flats. It’s for a family party–dear Aunt Addie’s 95th. The dress is medium gray, and I was going to wear my favorite amethyst earrings, my ladies pocketwatch on its slide chain and a gold bracelet, all yellow gold. I have been scarf-challenged all my life. Thanks.

“I don’t own boots” - I wanna move to your town! Just kidding. It sounds like a lovely outfit. Go for it.

As I recall, we had a little discussion about shearling coats a little while ago… Our local Costco has a roadshow this week - Italian-made shearling coats and hand-sewn cashmere-lined leather gloves. The lady said that the items will be featured on Costco dot com soon.

I showed my hairdresser a picture of Ellen Barkin’s hair, I really like the cut. Thanks!

fafnir, you inspired me to pull my charcoal cashmere dress out of the closet, and I wore it tonight, paired with my wine-colored tights and black suede pumps with chunky heels.

Deb922,
Cute dress! My big concerns would be whether the sleeves are the right length, whether it would wrinkle (hate ironing, how long/short it would be on me, whether it would gap for me between buttons (it’s a problem sometimes), but it IS adorable. Hope it looks great on you, as it does on the model!

The no-boot thing is NOT geographical! LOL, I am just dull. I do have snow boots for shoveling the driveway, does that count? My D has several pairs–she probably makes up for me. Thanks everybody, I am going to go for it. I might as well become wacky cousin fafnir now, becuase it’s only going to get worse!

I just bought my first pair of boots. I have big calves so have shied away from boots. Sales clerk was very convincing , though
Got them in brown [Amazon.com: AK Anne Klein Women’s Carlow Riding Boot: Wide Calf: Shoes](http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005CTIETI?ref=endl_rd)

I let myself get 2 pr of shoes with high heels. I never wear these. And now I remember why. OUCH. I could barely walk by the end of the day :(

Fashion Mavens-
Can I wear a tunic top, leggings and boots?

I have worn a tunic/short dress with tight jeans and boots- but that’s me & I live in Seattle not NyC or Chicago. The Boden site features tunics, but many of the models are wearing them with bare legs so doesn’t that make it a minidress?
I think it depends what your body type is and how tall you are.
I was looking @ the Eileen Fisher site to see what they had, and they are featuring stirrup pants?
Boy- I’m getting too old for this.

I have leggings and sweater-ish tunics and I’m not afraid to wear them with boots! Not for work, but for running errands, going out, etc.

I was looking for a link with a picture to post and came across this image. Not the outfit jym was asking about, but boy, this lady rocks her DVF tunic/minidress!
