Dressing Young (Part 1)

^^^ She matches her house?

LOL, EK, the pattern on her dress does resemble the wrought iron accents in the background. :)

Yes. Go for it. I plan to get a sweater dress/tunic and wear it this winter with motorcycle boots and tights. Advanced Style, here I come. I guess I just need an oversized pair of purple reading glasses:).

^I want to see the glasses you are considering. Just went way oversized myself. I thought everyone dressed to match their house? :)

Alumother, this is one of the coolest eye glass frames in the stores, IMO. It would go well with your outfit ;)

Too bad I can’t wear round glasses with my rounder than round face!

they come in purple

I bought this pair of smoking slippers to wear with skinny jeans. Do I wear them with no socks? (Long time lurker, finally jumping in. )

Nice shoes! Quite catchy. I’ll say no visible socks. If you are concerned about your feet getting sweaty, you can wear some invisible socks, like these shoe liners:

Just have to say I love this thread. It is so helpful! I had the same question about the smoking slipper style. I didn’t think socks would look good but pretty soon it’s going to be too cold for me to go sockless.

Which is why I LOVE boots. Can’t believe someone recently posted that she finally bought a pair. I bought two pair and have to decide which one to keep of the DV and the Frye.

Btw does anyone know when girls feet stop growing? My D is 15 and her feet didn’t grow for a long time but recently she has stayed at a size 7 for over a year. She needs boots but I don’t want to spend a fortune if she will outgrow them next year!

Ha! I had no specific glasses in mind, was just thinking of the Advanced Style women! But you all picked out my all time fave sunglasses ever. Miuccia, you cool chick you.

Sureofsomething- I love those shoes. I tried on a pair of very similar looking shoes last weekend, but my feet are narrow and they didn’t fit :frowning: .

If anyone sees a pair in that style that come in narrow width, please let me know!

Okay so just got back from first day of Princeton Parent Weekend. And yes, of course, I sat thru all sorts of lectures on the experience my kid is having and all that. But also, I was paying attention to the moms and what they were wearing. Of course, some were in giant sweatshirts and sensible shoes. And some were so chic you just wanted to slap them. But then there was the band of “Dressing Young” moms and it was really interesting to tune into them.

So here’s my report from the front:

Dont try to be to outlandish. The animal print thing needs to be very, very under control. One accessory, at the most.

Metallic shoes just look lousy. There’s a time and place. Not fall in a college town.

North Face is so cool. We all love it. Wear it to get the mail from the mailbox. Not to your kid’s campus.

The little tweed tailored jacket is way cool right now with jeans and a good purse and good boots or shoes.

I wore matchstick jeans from J Crew, a silk colorful floral shirt under a boden navy short jacket. And my maroon danskos. And guess what – Three, yes Three – moms asked me where I got my shoes and what they were called. They were walking around campus in flats with no arch support and dying. Or wearing way cool boots and dying.

One of these moms – a friend now – works for the UN.

So that’s my report. I’m sticking with Dansko. Great fitting jeans and a great little jacket are the ticket this season.

In terms of hair, the best were the moms with the great bone structure to allow them to swoop it up and clip it, exposing their jaw and throat. I’m a round face gal and feel it wouldn’t work for me but I might give it a try.

They’re not familiar with Danskos?

[Professional - Dansko Shoes & Footwear - TheWalkingCompany.com](Dansko | WalkingCo)

Sewhappy, are your Danskos ‘black cherry’ like these? (Didn’t see any maroon ones.) I have often admired Danskos from afar. Never tried them on, although they seem to get rave reviews. Seems all the women I know who wear them are young (at least mentally!) and hip.

One nurse friend said she wouldn’t wear them because they were too stiff. Any comments on that critique?

THat’s so funny you watched the moms at Parents day, because it was Parent’s day at my D’s boarding school (altho she’s a day student) so I was definitely checking out the moms.

Part of my problem was jeans are not allowed in the dress code so I didn’t want to wear them to the classrooms today. I will wear them to matches and other meetings, but it felt funny when all the kids were in academic dress. And I saw hardly anyone with them on.

This time of year is tough on footwear. I saw many moms in boots, but there were many in ankle pants or rolled up cords with sandals or flats. They looked funny standing next to each other.

I would not have guessed putting Danskos with the JCrew matchstick jeans (which I absolutely LOVE - thank god there’s an outlet near me). My feet hurt often so I will have to try some of that style on.

Beil- I have some Danskos (known as potato shoes in our newspaper style column) and, yes, the stiffness can be a problem. I know several people who have fallen or turned ankles from stepping on something unyielding with the Danskos. Some people also think they are too heavy for all day wear. The flip side is that many medical professionals swear by them and wear them for long days on their feet.

I wore JCrew matchstick aqua cords today with purple corduroy Tom’s to work today with a white pullover sweater. Worked well.

Beil, yes that’s the color of my Dansko’s. Mine aren’t the shiny patent but I have a pair in black patent that can be a lot of fun. The black cherry color seems to go with many colors of pants.

MOWC, you are right that it is quite possible to turn an ankle in Dansko’s. One of the things I like about them is that they elevate you out of the muck in the winter but that means if you step wrong you can fall a ways. I’ve never actually injured myself though. And when the day calls for hardcore walking I will generally wear my Saucony cross-trainers.

I think the key to comfort in Danskos is buy them a bit loose. I get mine in a size that allows me to wear a wool sock in winter. They don’t fall off, but they leave a lot of space around my foot. So you can easily step in and out of them. I love that.

It was surprising to me how many obviously professional, tuned in moms didn’t know about Dansko’s. But then there are so many brands of shoes that I’d never heard of before this great thread.

Happy fall, everyone. Transition seasons are so fun for fashion!

sewhappy - I’m surprised that the moms wearing boots weren’t comfortable. I have worn mine (both flat riding style and the heeled ones) in NYC, walked for miles and was fine. The Danskos are cute but no narrow sizes.

So funny to read that you were checking out the moms’ clothes at parent weekend. I did that at S’s HS back to school night a few weeks ago. So it’s not just me.

Sewhappy, I’m surprised that you didn’t like the metallics you saw. I just bought these and I love them because they look great with almost any color combination.

Danskos are basically clogs so they should fit so the heels rise and fall in them. I think many people buy them too small.

Some people find Naot’s and Jambu’s to be more stylish than Dansko’s. Of course, others feel the opposite way. I borrow my D’s Naot sandals all the time and love them. She can’t wear Dansko’s because her arches are too high. She prefers Merrell’s clogs.
