Dressing Young (Part 1)

I need the collective help of all you wonderful shoppers out there! I am looking for a brown tweed blazer shorter and nipped at the waist. I love the cut of the JCrew Schoolboy Blazer, and this one [Collection jeweled-collar schoolboy blazer - schoolboy - Women’s blazers - J.Crew](http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/blazers/schoolboy/PRDOVR~99236/99236.jsp) would be great with the exception of the bedazzling they decided would be fun on the collar. My budget is $200, but if I find the perfect one I could inch up to $250 tops.

Thanks for your thoughts ladies! :)

Have you looked at Boden?
[British Tweed Blazer WE363 Jackets at Boden](http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/Womens-Coats-Jackets/Jackets/WE363/Womens-British-Tweed-Blazer.html)

cute jackets, ek!

EK4 - I have, thank you. The cut is great but the darker brown plaid had a pink that runs through it that didn’t jazz me. I’m hoping for something really neutral.

Try Coldwater Creek on line. They usually have a large selection of jackets.

I love the Boden navy tweed blazer I got on sale last spring. Am wearing it often this season.

Gourmet, I generally adore your fashion eye but not on the metallic shoes. Not on a college campus in the fall in the middle of a cold, autumn day. Just seemed way off key to me. And I saw a fair number of them with cropped pants, which also felt wrong to me given the season and weather.

But a lot of this is just subtle nuance in what looks “right” to us.

I wore Dansko’s several years ago when they first reappeared and had their “renaissance.” But now they are so ubiquitous - I see them on everyone, especially the black patent pair, that they’ve lost their specialness. Whenever anything becomes a huge trend - half the women at the grocery store are wearing it (and some are definitely not “dressing young”), it’s time for me to move on. This is how I feel about Dansko’s, barn jackets, capri pants, to name a few. I like classic, but with a little bit of “right now” mixed in.

Danskos for me are like Birkenstocks, great for standing, not so much for walking.
When I wore Danskos, they were " nurses" shoes. My D who is a teacher wears them.
Being that I can’t bend my right knee however I like any shoe I can slide into.
Last day to use your coupon at REI, have to get D another pair of running shoes, she is working up to the Rock & Roll marathon next year.

After following this thread off and on since its beginning…

I can no more imagine Gourmetmom in the black cherry Dansko’s than Sewhappy in the metallic Tod’s. However, I don’t see one shoe as more right or wrong than the other. Just different. Equally attractive and interesting choices. I wouldn’t wear either. Lately all I’m wearing is Trippins. In black. As someone ;)* once said “there is no shame in black shoes”

Gourmetmom: That is a very interesting post. You and sewhappy seem to be getting your idea of trends from different sources. It might be interesting to consider who recognizes the Dansko brand when they see it on the street, and who recognizes the Tod’s?

What would you wear to parents weekend?

*amid privilege blog

I like the metallic shoes, but they don’t look like they have much support.
I do have some silver ballet flats that are covered with metallic glitter. D gave them to me when they got bare spots- but I just redid them with some stuff from the scrapbooking aisle at Fred Meyer!

Good question, alb - I’m going to a few events at Brown (Family Weekend) on Saturday, then headed up to Boston for the Head of the Charles. I’ll definitely wear the metallic Pradas - which are actually quite supportive, more so than the Tod’s drivers. I’ll probably pair them with a light silvery gray stretch cord (AG’s, which fit so well), a dark purple stretch jersey Wolford top, and a darker gray circle cardigan that I just bought - I think it’s Alice and Olivia - the soft and slouchy type you can really sink into. A very comfortable outfit - easy to walk and sit in the car. Now, if it rains - I am not one to ruin beautiful shoes in the rain, I’ll wear a pair of low-heeled Aquatalia boots, dark wash J Brand jeans, a cashmere turtleneck, and a very beautiful Etro raincoat - trench style, lacquered cotton, and a rainbow of multicolored paisleys.

I always check out clothes where ever I go, and it is interesting to see other parents - presumably people in a similar stage in life and what they choose to wear.

I’ve got a pair of the Tod’s Gommino metallic (gold) driving mocassins–they’re similar to the ones Gourmetmom posted except that mine don’t have ties. The Tod’s don’t have a whole lot of support, at least not like Danskos. I agree with Gourmetmom–Danskos are ubiquitous in my neck of the woods. Lots of women wear them. I have a pair of nubuck Danskos, which I wear when it’s raining out. They’re indestructible. I’ve known about Danskos for years–got my first pair in '97 or '98. A friend of mine who is a horse person was the first one who had them.

I was introduced to Dansko when I had horses too. I wore a pair of their chukka style boots to the barn because they were durable and protected my toes from errant horse steps while grooming. I bought my daughter a blue suede pair when she was in middle school but her arches were too high so they became mine. I wore them fairly often with boot cut jeans.

Have never heard of Tods but know lots of people who wear Danskos.
I have pr. of the leather burgandy-ish color. Danskos saved my life when I had plantar fasciitis. They may not be super stylish but are great if you have a “stand on your feet all day” kind of job.

I will recognize both Danskos and Tod’s. I find most Tod’s shoes pretty comfortable, except those driving mocs (can’t wear totally flat shoes). My favorite Tod’s is a pair of their brown suede wedges that I bought for travel.

[Tod’s ‘Zeppa Decollete’ Wedge Pump | Nordstrom](http://m.nordstrom.com/Product/Details/3196526?origin=keywordsearch?urlMapRedirect=1)

Danskos are pretty ubiquitous here in my neck of the woods, too, and I constantly hear people praising them for their comfort, yet I never felt the need to get a pair, since I always could find other comfortable options (I guess I’m very lucky).

Anyone know of good COMFORTABLE shoes for narrow feet? My mom (age 83) has feet that are very narrow and is having an awful time finding anything that fits properly. She’s a size 9 narrow and most shoes & sandals here are a 9 medium, wide or extra wide.
Thanks for any help!

HImom…try Zappos. Shipping is free and return shipping is free. You can order several pairs of shoes for her to try on and then send back the ones that don’t work.[Narrow Shoes | Zappos.com Free Shipping ALWAYS](<a href=“Narrow shoes narrow + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com”>Narrow Shoes | Zappos.com)

I love reading this thread! Rarely post as I don’t feel like I know nearly as much about style as the rest of you but would love to ask a question…what shoes do you wear when it rains? I live in Northern California (no snow) and still struggle when it rains. While I have multiple pair of just-below-the-knee flat boots, I really don’t like wearing boots all day long. I’ve been thinking some kind of waterproof bootie might work. Aquatalia is the only brand I’m aware of that makes waterproof leather boots but, at least last time I googled, they didn’t make a shorter flat boot that I liked/thought would work. What I’m looking for would be the kind of she you can wear all day, to meetings, shopping–whatever the day’s schedule holds.

HIMom, take a look at Munro shoes on Zappos or Nordie’s site - Munro makes shoes in witdths from AAA to EE. Their shoes are made in the USA and quite comfortable! Ferrgamo shoes come in narrow widths (the Queen has benn known to wear Ferrgamos), but compared to Munro, they are way more $$$.

collage1, Stuart Weitzman makes booties with Goretex uppers, like these ones:

Another brand that makes waterproof shoes is La Cnadienne.

And apparently some Pikolinos are waterproof, too:
