Dressing Young (Part 1)

My DD has been home for fall break and she has burglarized my closet. My recently purchased J Crew navy jacket. Two recently acquired narrow leather belts. A sweater from Boden. Here’s the thing, though. I think this may mean that I’m “dressing young” at least somewhat. Either that or my 19-year-old is “dressing old”.

So glad you were able to find some shoes for your mom HImom! Good fitting shoes are worth just about anything in my book. She will be thanking you for a very long time (and Nordies  ).

sewhappy, I don’t have D’s, three S’s, but from what I hear from my gf’s the raiding of closets is a compliment, no matter how irritating. Here it works the other way around. I’m very likely to raid my boys closets for something, lol. Sometimes all I want is a perfectly slouchy sweater and DH’s are way too big, whereas S2 & S3 are tall but sill only about 140lbs so their things don’t swallow me.

I walked through Lord & Taylor yesterday on my way to J Crew in need of a new white blouse. I spent all day Saturday tucking mine in and decided my favorite one from Ann Taylor was great untucked, or with pants with a higher waistline, not toothpick jeans. L&T currently has their cashmere sweaters marked down with an additional $25 off. There’s a 15% off coupon which doesn’t apply. I think the gal must have made a mistake but the final total ended up being $76 for the V-neck. The mark down price had been $119 so with $25 off I’d expected $94 plus tax. I didn’t complain. I got a lovely berry color that will be nice for the holidays. Their cashmere isn’t heirloom quality but on sale it’s a nice sweater at a decent price. I was tempted to grab another when I saw $76 but I didn’t want to tempt fate.

Sewhappy, good luck getting those burglarized items back!!

I love Boden–makes me smile that they refer to pullover sweaters as ‘jumpers’. Reminds me of my stay in the UK many years ago…They’re quite fond of their jumpers!

I am very smitten with the Boden “jumpers” in their winter catalog. Here is the sweater my DD absconded with –

I wish this came in petite, it would be adorable on my oldest.

Do you ever notice you collect outerwear?
I have some coats I won’t give up although I haven’t worn them for years.

Raises hand guiltily. I love outerwear. Read somewhere once, maybe Diane Vreeland, that a woman can never have too much outerwear.

Adorable coat Emerald. We need a Mom’s Only thread on the pleasures of buying clothes for our beautiful daughters. :)

Speaking of outerwear, RueLaLa has Cinzia Rocca coats on sale today. I just ordered one, and hope this will be the end of my winter coat quest!

‘I just ordered one, and hope this will be the end of my winter coat quest!’

Every winter, I feel the need to get a new outerwear, every year, I told myself that this is going to be my last purchase, but every winter brings new excuses for me to get one more again…haha…

BunsenBurner, a while back you recommended smartwool sock liners. I want to tell you how great these are. I’ve bought sock liners before and thought they were awful, mostly they didn’t work. These stayed on my feet, were comfortable and as all smartwool, nice and warm.

Thanks.

deb, I looove all things Smartwool. Glad that the sock liners worked for you! I went through several brands of icky, sliding off my feet liners, too…

Re: outerwear. I fess up - I hoard coats. I technically can get by without a coat here in my neck of the woods, but I just love coats.

I LOVE coats. I have a coat that has been through two marriages. And I have been married for almost 28 years to my current spouse. I just saw an emerald green one that I loved - but now I can’t find the link, which is probably a good thing.

I bought a pair of the munro booties

They are very, very comfortable and look great with skirts (& black tights) and straight jeans. I am a happy girl.

wnp, I want to get some of those for my daughter in New Jersey! They are adorable.

And a pair for yourself! Honestly, they are versatile.

Oh, and here is the link to the coat

I love the green. Probably the color is little too trendy and will look dated in two years, but when I was about thirteen I had a similar green coat and it was one of my all time favorites. What can I say - all Irish with fair coloring, freckles, etc.

Wnp, I heart that coat. I met in in person today. Gorgeous!! I had to do some major outerwear shopping this weekend for my expat D. Turns out, she underestimated how cold it gets in her new country.

Pretty coat!

I don’t think that green hue is at all trendy. It will always be wonderful.

I was trying to abstain from coat-buying this year but this thread got my motor running and now I’m on the hunt. Darn!

I love wool, classic coats like WNP’s but seriously don’t need one. I could more easily justify a new parka and would like something with a little more shape and attitude than my old ones. So these two from Garnet Hill look interesting –

This one is cute and on sale but I’m thinking the empire waist looks silly on women of a certain age? Would get it in the pewter.

I love this one but it’s pricey for me:

I love peacock green-- but now that my hair is more blond than red, I find that color can kinda wash me out- have to either find different colors or wear more make up.
I don’t think it is too trendy, but I probably would upgrade the buttons, I also think it needs detail at the wrists to balance the full skirt.
I have a down jacket from Garnet hill from a couple seasons ago. It is an unusual color, but not as warm as one from someplace like REI.

Younger D used to have a jacket this color when she was nine.

What do you think? High heels and ‘power suits’ are on their way out? I don’t have a lot of experience in this kind of environment, so I’m curious.

worknprogress: I had a princess-line wool coat almost like that one when I was in high school. Mine was dark forest green, very heavy wool. I paid for that coat myself and was so proud of it.

On the coat-collecting front, I got a wonderful wool “car coat” yesterday at Costco. It’s very soft wool with updated style to fit over sweaters. Very similar to this one at Neiman Marcus for about $600, but cost only $50! (Available in black, gray, and dark red for you Costco fans.)

You are so sweet bookie mom- I was just trying to think of what else i needed at Costco!
