BB, love love the top! So classy and I love that its navy (my new favorite basic)

This thought stems from a conversation with lady friends over the weekend…Do you have a favorite item, a staple, in your wardrobe that you’d be lost without?

I have a pair of black patent tuxedo flats with a tailored grosgrain bow that I’ve worn for several years and still get lots of favorable comments about them. (Think smoking slippers before I knew they were called that!) I dread the day when they will have to be pitched! I find myself taking care of them like nothing else in my wardrobe. I’ve worn them with a variety of outfits, even occasionally with jeans. I’m tall and have big feet, so they work well for me.

What’s your favorite, I’d-be-lost-without-it wardrobe staple?

Deb, thanks! I have it bookmarked, so fingers crossed, size 2 will still be there when it goes on sale (no, i’m not size 2 - DvF things run huge).

Hmmm… A wardrobe staple? Possibly, my favorite Burberry trench. I always grab it out of the closet when I need a coat. I will be very unhappy if it disappears.

Navy blue is the greatest thing for night.

just got a postcard for the Nordstrom sale! Good luck

My wardrobe staple would be my camisoles, tights and leggings from Tees by Tina. I wear them all seasons, at least several times per week. My DD steals them from me.

And this thread helped me recognize that Dansko clogs are sort of my signature. :)

In all truth, I rarely wear jeans anymore. I just don’t like the feel of denim that much.

Bunsen, it’s a great top but not one I’d wear. As with the tall boot thing, the combination of turtleneck with sleeveless just doesn’t compute me.

Love the top - looks unique and flattering - I say go for it.

Saw several very cute pairs of ankle length heeled boots (called “booties”) while shopping today. Can’t get them out of my mind, so I think I will buy a pair. Does anyone know - can I wear them with tights and a sweater dress?? Or just with pants?

Like idea of the top but what about bra straps?

FYI loft has great womens pants cords and denim in shapes for women. I wear the curvy straight…

I like ankle boots, too. If they’re flattering then they can work with dresses, leggings, skinny jeans or beneath bootcut. My DD will wear these in the teal with tights and wool cuffed shorts in the winter. Somehow it works:

Booties look best with same color tights, which will elongate the leg. I see lots of photos online of women with bare legs and booties, but few people can wear this look successfully.

A halter style or strapless bra will work with the top - thus, it may not be a good choice for the more well-endowed gals.

You know, I actually think tall boots on someone with shortish legs chops up the line of the leg more than an ankle boot which adds ballast to the foot and elongates. Was at the local mall this afternoon and saw a number of women in skinny jeans and the tall boots. Most were not built like models. The boots would generally be in a dark brown, the jeans in a blue and the overall effect was to cut their leg line in half.

Thank you all for your opinions about the top! I am almost tempted to get it now. My solution for bra straps is a stick-on Nubra type bra (if the dress is snug), or with a flowy top like the DVF one I will wear my favorite Marie Jo “Tom” bra, which is the best convertible bra ever, IMO. [BEST Bra EVER!](Marie Jo Tom Fiberfill Convertible Underwire Bra 012-0826 - Marie Jo Bras) And, as the past experiments showed, it works very well for ladies with 36D chests (and possibly even larger - the bra is very supportive).

Sewhappy, I love those booties! Especially the denim color. IMO, western style booties like those could look really nice with tights without the color matching. However, I agree with Gourmetmom that most other ankle booties work best with tights of the same color (the “figure skater” effect). I was so happy that the Aquatalia booties I ordered perfectly matched the color of my favorite tights. :)

That is a good looking bra, and the straps are so attractive enough that it wouldn’t be the end of the world if they peeked out a bit. I usually wear a strapless bra with odd necklines so I don’t have to worry about anything showing. I like to forget about my clothes once I’m dressed and out the door. I wear a large B/small C, and I don’t need major support…yet.

I agree with sewhappy that tucked jeans in boots only works for those with long, thin legs. The booties, assuming they have a heel of 3" or more, will really add length when paired with matching tights. This is a great look - fashionable and flattering.

I just figured that you would wear a bra that crosses in the back. I look like an idiot putting it on but it works for that top. It did say that the armholes are a little low so it may need another undergarment but it is so pretty I would be tempted to give it a go. I love that type of shirt. I’ve finally decided that I have decent arms and this would show them off.

Love booties, love the way they look with skinny jeans and tights and skirts.

To me, these fantastic shoes Bunsen ordered are practically booties – they are in an accent color and a bit clunky, weighting down the foot and punctuating the end of the limbs. They are basically what I think an ankle bootie can also accomplish. I think doing an ankle boot in the same color as your pant or tights or leggings might not work, actually, so well as doing the ankle boot in a contrast color.

I LOVE the Aquatalia booties, but they are a little out of my price range.

in a black and gray combination and I think I may just have to indulge. They also have them in all black but the black and gray are a little more fun. I like the leopard but I already have a Munro shoe with leopard in the mix and so I don’t think I want another. I also liked these

I think the reference to ice skating shoes is a good guideline. I have long slim legs, but I still only wear my booties with a similar color so I don’t break up the line. I can wear high boots with jeans tucked in and because of my proportions, they make me look taller. I will say, I stick to darker colored boots so they blend in with my jeans.

Boots, jeans, turtlenecks, ah yes - this is my time of year.

I have 2 pairs of Munro sandles, and they are so comfortable. Have fun with them.

FYI - Nordie’s sale is on. The Munro Grace bootie with leopard trim is on sale. I picked up a pair of Aquatalia winter boots for my ex-pat D. They do not look fancy, but with winter temperatures in the teens, I do not think she can get away with wearing her fall boots and heels all winter long.

Took mom to Nordie’s yesterday. She nearly fainted to see shoes with 4-figure pricetags. She’s more used to Ross, with low 2-digit prices. We went there and purchased her some socks and shoes that she was happy with AFTER we perused Nordie’s and couldn’t find anything at any price that fit her in their store.
