I wish I had a daughter, but alas I have two boys. The oldest one is a fashion guy, though, so it’s fun shopping with him. I borrow a few nieces here & there when I want to go “girl” shopping!
I love how everyone is so helpful and supportive of one another on this thread!
Just wanted to circle back and say thanks for all the help and advice when I was stressing about my D and her need for a professional wardrobe as she starts her new job post-graduation. We met with the Nordstrom personal shopper and she was fabulous. She brought my daughter what seemed like endless options to try on and my D walked out with 4 pair of pants, 6 dresses, about 8 tops and one darling jacket. She still needs some shoes but we filled in with some (costume) jewelry and I had purchased a nice furla bag for transporting her computer to and from work so she’s in really good shape. Spent a wee bit more than I wanted but it was all worth it. We were in a large mall and had planned to check out many of the stores recommended but we ended up spending about 4 hours in Nordstrom and, at that point, we just couldn’t shop any more. Plus, she really had a full wardrobe and I wasn’t going to spend more money so it worked out. Thanks again for all your support.
What a thoughtful and generous mom you are. My folks never did anything like that for me and to be honest, I haven’t done that for either of my kids. S had the darndest time finding clothing that fit, as he’s slender and about 5’6" and D is a 0 or 00, so selection for her is very limited as well. Maybe when she starts a professional job, we will try a personal shopper and see how it goes.
Thought I would report back after our trip to the outlet mall. It was a successful day. First stop was the outlet office where we picked up a coupon book by showing our auto club card
The Saks outlet was jammed with dresses. Many in small sizes. She tried on many and found quite a few she liked. She ended up with the following 2. Both were marked down and they were having an extra 40% off lowest price. The coupon book gave another $20 off. So both dresses plus tax came in at 205.00. The both fit great. http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374306418059&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524446790260&R=791093111666&P_name=Elizabeth+and+James&N=4294912081+306418059&bmUID=kWE37lP
She bought this in black. It’s much longer on her since she is short. http://www.lyst.com/clothing/elizabeth-and-james-mia-bardot-stretch-dress-purple/
This one she bought in a pretty blue.both are nice dresses to have. She had never tried Elizabeth and James and found the brand fit her well.
Next stop was Neiman Marcus outlet. They didn’t have as many dresses. She bought the following and might wear it to the shower. http://www.lyst.com/clothing/tibi-ibis-bordered-cross-back-dress-indigo-multi-indigo-multi/
After markdown and extr $25 off with coupon book the dress was $125.00.
She also tried a beautiful Jill Stuart fit and flare that started at over $500 and on sale for just over $100. I would have bought it but she felt it was a tad to big.
We tried to stay clear of the stuff that was just made for the outlet.
The trip was successful in that she also found styles that work for her body and brands that look good on her. So many times we go shopping and she can’t find anything that fits. All the dresses she tried with sleeves looked terrible in her.
I looked for me but didn’t find anything. While Saks has a lot of dresses most of them were in sizes 8 and below. Or they were on sale for over $1000.
We also both bought pants at the AG store.
We both commented on how helpful the sales people were at all the stores we went in. Being an outlet mall we didn’t expect this.
Yay to successful outlet shopping! Your D picked some cute gems, and the price is hard to beat! IMO, she chose the right strategy - all of these dresses have halter-like neckline which usually works well for ladies with muscular arms. The Tibi dress is fresh and unusual, and I think it will work well for the type of shower you are planning.
I’m still doing a happy dance after doing a little shopping of my own! Found this dress in gorgeous purplish-bluish steel gray at 75% off:
Indeed! I could not believe the price and the fact that they had it in my size. I looked all over the tag, but all I could see are the size and a whole bunch of some numbers. One of them probably means “cadet blue”!
Himom, D just did her professional shopping at Banana Republic outlet petite with 00 size- she was ectastic that the clothes fit well. The closest any store for nice clothes shopping is 3 hours away from us.
Good to know! D is in cinema, so its harder to figure out her wardrobe. They are not sure what they will be doing, especially on the set, so not s ‘traditional’ office setting with heels and clothing for A/C (tho sometimes they are on very cold, wet, uncomfortable venues). She may switch fields at some point as well, so is trying not to acquire too many things.
I’m officially a crazy cat lady! Yesterday, while running through the mall trying to find a shirt in a very specific color for Mr. (thank goodness it was just a shirt!!), I saw this bag - in cats!
(Bunsen Burner do you have any other animals? I heard a funny from Rosie O’Donnell the other day where she said she got two dogs so she could be an “animal lover” instead of a crazy cat lady).
My S and saw these all over in the men’s departments too. Needless to say, he will not be buying any. I have seen them in the women’s departments for about a year. They remind me of old school sweat pants a lot of the time.
I bought a pair of flare jeans. After living in skinny jeans, they are insanely comfortable. I really like them and they looked good with a lot of different tops. Mine are higher waisted which I loved and think they made me look taller, which is great when you are 5’1".
So flare jeans, yea or nay?
Jogger pants are ok but make me look shorter. I think they might be nice for traveling and a bit dressier than what most people travel in. As I like to say, my kids look like they’ve been on a 3 day bender when they fly.
Flare jeans? Check, as long as they are not too 70s. I will have to wear heels with them because I am too short to pull off that look without adding some extra height.
Did you notice that suede and faux suede is all over the stores?
