Dressing Young (Part 1)

Katharine Hepburn? Though I don’t know if her personal style was consistent with her movie style.

Speaking of Hepburns, Audrey Hepburn certainly had a consistent, recognizable style. And my favorite style icon whom I always bring up is Ines de la Fressange.

Then there are the magazine-editor types – Diana Vreeland, Iris Afpel (sp?), Grace Coddington, Anna Wintour (to some extent).

And Jackie O.

Don’t particularly like her style, but Heidi Klum always seems to be wearing a variation on the same mini-dress.

I’ve seen Molly Ringwald around town on numerous occasions throughout the decades and I swear she is always wearing a variation on the exact same outfit. EDITED TO ADD: okay, take molly ringwald off the list. I just googled her and she wasn’t wearing the outfit in any of the pictures of her.

A note for fashionistas: Moda Operandi is apparently pre-selling Mansur Gavriel Fall 2016 bags and shoes for the next 16 hours. The red suede glove shoes look too tempting!!!

I have started to see block heels in stores. Will that be the next trend in shoes?

I wish I knew, surfcity! I gather those glove shoes are gathering popularity.

(Dang. Can’t get those red beauties out of my head!!! Aaack!)

Stevie Nicks.
Nancy Pelosi. Hillary Clinton - probably most women politicians end up with a pants suit style (suit, scoop neck blouse, chunky necklace) that I don’t think is particularly “dressing young”, bu they also seem obliged to do the look. Love this collage: http://cdn-img.instyle.com/sites/default/files/styles/684xflex/public/images/2015/06/061715-hillary-clinton-pantsuits-lead.jpg?itok=cS52k7ef

I was so glad when Hillary began wearing pantsuits. I gave up the skirt suit and never looked back.

Speaking of block heels, I like them for their practicality. Prada and Ferragamo are the two brands that almost always offered some block heels in addition to other options.
It seems that the fashion world is less focused on finding a single, dominant trend… Instead, they go after color schemes! I just received a box from Nordstrom: a gorgeous Zarita dress by DVF for kiddo and a Classiques (Nordstrom’s house brand) lightweight sweater for me. One is lace, the other is some synthetic jersey… The color is absolutely identical turquoise-green! Pantone is raking in big buck$.

Did anyone see this story from WaPo? Thoughts?

The clothes shown at fashion week are of course high fashion and would be “toned down” before hitting mass market, but I’m not crazy about the all over roomy look. I think it’s very unflattering

No. Will not get rid of my skinny jeans or leggings. Just no.

notelling- I love skinny’s too.

Me three.

Ditto, I’m too petite to wear roomy clothes.

I’ll join the chorus. I look at photos of me in the 70s and 80s – high waisted pleated pants, etc., and I look at least 10 pounds heavier than I really am. People do ask me if I’ve lost weight – I haven’t, I just wear clothing that fits me better!

The juxtaposition of Caroline Herrera with Marc Jacobs - oh, my. Both of hers are so absolutely, wonderfully wearable. The MJ, not so much. And the models - scary.

Anyway, I’d love to find pants and/or jeans with room in the legs. My legs have never been thin, and skinny jeans are so unbecoming on me. Couple that with being short-legged, and I can’t find anything that doesn’t have to be completely tailored - simple shortening doesn’t help if the knees hit me at mid-calf.
Big enough to fit, but not so big as to be overwhelming.

I think the designers are banking on 2 things: (a) they are telling the customers, “See how much fabric it took to make the damn outfit? It only makes sense for us to raise our (already crazy) prices!” and (b) the public finally got fitness fatigue and will welcome said overpriced potato sacks as an excuse to have a few more cookies!

Good grief. The supposed new ‘big clothing’ look reminds me of the unfortunate folks who have to sleep in public doorways during a cold spell.

Or David Byrne’s personal style!

Thinking about over-sized clothing: I’ve been following the blog Accidental Icon almost from the get-go. She is a tiny 60 year old, who wears a lot of over sized looks. I wonder what some of you posting think about her look? I especially like the coat and dress in the 2/4 post.

I just finished the final season of Downton Abbey. The 20s clothes Cora, Edith, Mary, etc wear seem pretty loose and over sized to me. How do you all feel about those clothes?

I love Rose’s travel outfit when she arrives at Downton. I love all the beautiful long loose coats shown in that season.

I think a boot cut jean can be really flattering on pear shaped bodies, or actually most body shapes. Personally, while I like my skinny jeans and I do prefer the comfort of something not so close to the body. Not that I need Mom jeans, but boot cut feel more comfortable to me.
