I’m in need of a fashion consultant or two! My son is receiving an award that’s being presented by his professional school in conjunction with a convocation-type program. I’m excited to attend, see him receive the award, and enjoy the luncheon that follows. Other pertinent information: mid-March, major city in the Northeast.
Now, the question: What should I wear? A dress? A suit? Slacks and a sweater? The weather is pretty unpredictable that time of year–it may still be cold. I’m guessing he’ll wear a suit, but I don’t think it’s really a dressy occasion. I try to have the nobody’s-looking-at-me/it-doesn’t-matter-what-I-wear mindset but I do want to look appropriate. What would you wear to such an affair?
What nottelling said. Slacks (or skirt/tights) and a sweater or a dark, business-casual dress with a blazer is what I would go for. Congrats to your son!
I’d go with slacks in March unless the weather is unusually springlike, but I am always cold and I don’ like tights any better than pantyhose. They are the same thing in my book.
Cute dress! Personally, I think booties/tights/dress look is perfectly fine for women of our age, but the dress has to be the right style for the look to work right. Are you thinking about wearing tights and the linked booties with this specific dress? Somehow, sleeveless and tights/booties does not make a good combo IMO. As far as the shoes go, I like that style. I like hose, too, but even I would be hesitant to wear hose with open-toed sling backs like the style pictured in your link.
I agree with @BunsenBurner Cute dress. The shoes you posted that are similar to ones you own would look good with it. I would not wear black tights with a sleeveless dress though or with open toe shoes.
That said, generally speaking, tights and booties look fine to me for women of our age. I wear that look all the time. But it is more for fall/winter clothing, than a spring/summer dress or sleeveless dress.
I personally have a few sleeveless and cap-sleeved fit-and-flare dresses in dark, solid-color heavy wool ponte-like fabric that I wear with opaque black tights and booties. I wear these booties with them:
This dress is definitely a fall/winter dress. It is a heavier weight fabric. I am tall and slim so I do prefer hose of some sort with that much leg showing. At least in the winter.
The event is a fundraiser and I wil be speaking. There are all levels of dress there, I like to look fun and hip but can’t go too sexy or bling-y as I am the face of the organization.
I do love those boots. Had to talk myself into them because I am tall and don’t usually wear that much of a heel. But they look great with jeans too.
I guess I should try on the whole outfit and see if it works. Glad to hear us ladies can still wear the bootie and dress combo!
Nottelling, love your booties! surfcity, your booties are so cute, but I think they would work better with a wool dress with sleeves… Wear them in good health and enjoy how you look!
We went out to dinner tonight, and I wore a fitted dress, black (Wolford, of course!) tights, and my lovely booties. The dress is similar to this one (brown hues):
Does anyone want to talk about Diane Keaton’s Vanity Fair Oscar cover? Is she “dressing young”? What did everyone, anyone think about her outfit?
She’s wearing her own Paul Harnden coat. I recognized the designer immediately before reading the article. Then I went back and looked at street style shots and she’s worn it quite a bit.
It’s a fantastic photo, and I like that Diane Keaton is dressed in her own consistent, idiosyncratic style. She’s clearly communicating her brand, to go back to the Zuckerburg discussion. I wouldn’t really call it “dressing young” since it is sui generis.
I’ve been trying to think what other female celebrities have had the same very recognizable look and style for 40 years. That is a serious commitment. I mentioned Stevie Nicks on another thread. Maybe Diane von Furstenburg? Cher? Dolly Parton?
I like Keaton’s outfit so very much, especially that it is an everyday, for several years, outfit… but think it a bit casual for the shoot. She does a dress up version of this look. She has worn tuxes.
The red carpet parade never much interests me since it seems so very few have styled themselves. If I want to look at a runway show, I want to see the whole collection in context, so maybe I can understand the designer’s vision. The red carpet makes no sense to me.
