Dressing Young (Part 1)

Thanks @soozievt! Going for them. I have a pair with the same uppers and no heel, and they are sooo comfy on the feet. That small heel will make them even more comfortable.

BB…that looks like a comfortable heel.

I love those sandals BB! I loved the Eileen Fisher sandals that you got last year also. I need another pair of sandals like a hole in my head but…

I hope that isn’t too stalkerish that I remember a terrific pair of sandals that you got last year.

No not at all! Those are still my favorites. I wanted to get a pair in a color other than black but my size sold out everywhere. These will be perfect.

Love those BB- adding to my wish list for now…

Not sure if I should ask here or on the random question thread, but here goes. These days is there such a thing as dressing “too” young? I’ll explain why I ask.

Given my height (not enough) and weight (way too much), I now prefer 3/4 length sleeves. Long sleeves often hang down to my fingers and short sleeves show wobbly upper arms. I’ve noticed quite a few tops that have 3/4 sleeves also have a cut-out (the “cold shoulder” look) and I wondered if that might make them more comfortable in our hot, humid summers.

Last week, my dh (who very rarely comments about appearances) remarked on a woman on TV. She looked to be at least in her 70s and was wearing a top with the shoulder cut-outs. He said the top (along with the hair color and rest of the outfit) made him think of the phrase “mutton dressed as lamb.” He’d expect to see the top mainly on teens instead of adults. Seeing what looked like sun damaged skin on an 80" HD screen probably made it look even worse to him.

I have more than my share of age spots and sun damage, as well as several small surgical scars, on my arms. Now I’m thinking of sticking with 3/4 sleeve linen tops for summer and forgetting about the cut-outs. Dh would feel awful if I told him his remarks made me feel self-conscious, but I wonder how many other people share his opinion. Do you? And would you avoid wearing something that seemed like a fad or “too” young?

I personally do not like to see shoulder cutouts in anything other than resort or evening wear. If these tops are intended for casual errand running, then they should be fine. If you plan on wearing them to the office, IMO, no matter how casual the office is, I do not think it would be a good choice.

I’m 61 and have no idea how my generation is supposed to dress as we age. We don’t have the same rules our grandmothers and mothers did. For example, very few of us are giving up jeans. I do know there are enough of us to create a norm. Our skin is going to age. I don’t think most of us will cover it up. I think that is a very good thing. Our partners still find us attractive. So will the rest of the world if we make older skin something to be proud of instead of hiding it.

Baby boomers make style. When we started going gray, young women copied us! We rock.

I like the cold shoulder look for older women.

adding: I have some sheer all cotton voile jackets for very hot days. Also black cotton eyelet or sheer silks. I have never really gone sleeveless… too cold natured.

I’m not a fan of cutouts as they make me cold in odd spots. My sister who is mid-50s Houston bought some tops with cutout shoulders. She likes them but she tends to run hot and I cold.

My mother in her 80s wore jeans (Mom jeans, but still) all the time. She didn’t wear them nearly as much in her 60s. She completely stopped wearing skirts somewhere in her 70s, perhaps earlier. I never used to wear jeans with my clients, now I only avoid it the first time I meet them, and sometimes not even then. I don’t particularly like the cold shoulder look, but I have nothing against it age-wise. I have one huge scar from a melanoma that was removed on my arm. I figure it’s an object lesson for the world to stay out of the sun and/or use good sun protection. I don’t feel I have to cover up my upper arms just because they are a little flabby.

Haven’t worked in an office in decades, so my clothes are mainly suited for errands and at home with a very few exceptions for special occasions. I’ve bought only four dresses and one skirt in the past decade. Now that I know this particular style bugs dh, I won’t buy it just as he doesn’t wear a few things that I dislike. Not a big deal.

I remember seeing my future in-laws, over 40 years ago, wearing jeans and being shocked. None of my parents’ friends wore jeans, and my parents would not have dreamed of wearing them. For one thing, denim was not permitted at their country club (and still isn’t today.) I look at photos of my mother taken when she was 10 to 15 years younger than I am now, and she seems older. The rigidly coifed hair doesn’t help, but a lot of the difference is the clothing.

Alh, I need to look for cotton voile. I could live in linen and light cotton about eight months of the year.

Cold shoulder dresses or tops are trendy right now, and it may seem to be a good “in-between choice” because it doesn’t show all that much, but (IMO) something about the look is attention getting and distracting. I put it in the pile with all of the trends 20 somethings wear that should not make it to middle age.

Ok, I’m going to use Chicos clothes as an example. They have a lot of 3/4 sleeve tops for someone who doesn’t feel comfortable in sleeveless or short sleeves anymore.

I don’t care for this type of cold shoulder tops https://www.chicos.com/store/product/dotprint-coldshoulder-top/570201905?color=058&catId=cat40002

But if they have this type of sleeve, I think it’s much more flattering to my eye https://www.chicos.com/store/product/travelers-collection-textured-tiesleeve-top/570194557?color=3160&catId=cat40002

It’s like bell sleeves, these are very exaggerated and I think a little too “young” for me. https://www.chicos.com/store/product/linear-geometry-shirt/570194862?color=929&catId=cat40002

But take the same trend and make it smaller and it’s a trend I might wear. https://www.chicos.com/store/product/striped-flaresleeve-top/570199768?color=510&catId=cat40002

But me, I wear trends if I like them and pass on the stuff I don’t like. I’ll wear a short skirt or tunics and leggings. I bought a tie dyed shirt with bell sleeves yesterday. It’s cute and I felt pretty in it. I’ll wear it with my skinny jeans, maybe the distressed ones I like. Or maybe I’ll buy a pair of kick flares if I can find ones with the right proportions

Not a fan of cold shoulder dresses or tops. My h made a comment about them also and he’s only commented in 30 years of marriage on two trends he didn’t like - cold shoulder tops/dresses and gladiator sandals. Neither of which I cared for either so it works. I very much like 3/4 sleeves for every season except winter when even 3/4 sleeve can feel “cold” in the office.

Does anyone else have a flashback to Flash Dance when they see those cold (look ripped to me) shoulders. :))

Yup!

I’ve seen this thread around for years, but haven’t been reading because my style has been Northwest dumpy. But, after some alarming blood test a few months ago I’ve lost 35 pounds and finally look ok in non-dumpy clothes. I have no idea what I can get away with wearing at 60 without looking silly, so I’m reading now. The cold shoulder look is not something I’m considering, but how about skinny jeans and a fitted V-neck sweater?

@deb922 I agree with you the second cold shoulder type is much more flattering. I also like the short bell sleeves better. I once had a sweater with long bell sleeves and they kept dragging in the food when I was trying to cook. I ended up getting out the sewing machine and turning them into normal sleeves.

Indiana91: Skinny jeans and a fitted V-neck sweater are fine. Congrats on all your weight loss. We’ve discussed skinny jeans a lot on this thread. I’m in my late 50s and I wear them all the time.

I am not a fan of the cold-shoulder. I can’t wait for them to disappear and stop taking up space in clothing stores.

Congrats, Indiana. I second what fireandrain said: in my office, women of our age wear skinny jeans and all sorts of fitted sweaters. I like the look. Casual-nondumpy.
