This thread is like the Duracell bunny that just keeps going on and on.,
This is one of the iconic Cafe threads.
I love this thread!
^^me too! I was excited to see it show up today
BB: Thank you for the link - I’ve always loved the DVF wrap dresses. Here is another version of the wrap dress:
Pictures below:
I have a job for the Dressing Young crowd- I am in search of a new pair of nicer black pants. My go to pair for a number of years has been a pair of JCrew Minnie. They are slim cut ankle length with a side zip made from lightweight wool. The side zip and narrow cut work for my body shape. I don’t look good in any pant with a lot of fabric around the middle. Pleats look terrible on me. I need something that hits below the natural waistline as I have one hip that is rotated and higher. J Crew doesn’t seem to make the Minnie any longer. Due to weight loss my old pair are big even with a belt. I wear a nicer pant only a couple of times a year.
My everyday go to pant is the AG legging (which isn’t a legging but a skinny cut jean) and the AG Stilt which is a cigarette leg. Providing this info as it gives a picture as to what I look best in. I do best in a pant that is straight through the hip and thigh.
Would love suggestions.

@alh and @BunsenBurner great links. I love a wrap dress on other people. I’m one of the few people I know that a wrap dress looks hideous on.
@mom60 have you looked at WhiteHouseBlackMarket? They have a ponte pant that is very comfortable and they have some other pants in different styles and material. https://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com/store/category/pants/cat11679551/
A couple of years ago, I ended up with a ponte pants made by NYDJ.
I have black pants from Theory, Elliot Lauren and Rag and Bone.
Thank you for the suggestions. I’ve never been in White House Black Market though I think at least last time I looked we have one in our mall. It’s worth a look. I’ve never found a pair of NYDJ that look good on my body. I’m going to do a little online searching with the brands that @emilybee suggested. I have several Theory dresses but I’ve not tried their pants. I ended up last night wearing a pair of brushed denim navy AG pants to the Seder.
I realize that my closet is pretty set for casual wear. I have lots of jeans and a lot of linen dresses and tops for summer. I also have formal dresses but I’m lacking in the in between type of clothing.
I need to go shopping but I need to focus on what my closet is lacking versus other “finds”.
I like Theory pants, they fit my body type well. As you lost weight (congrats!) you might find that whatever brands and styles used to fit you before might not work for your “new” body.
@BunsenBurner I’ve thought about that. I don’t think it will make much difference in pants but it might in dresses. I have always been slim and narrow through my hips and thighs but until Pilates I never had much waist definition. I’ve always been basically a ruler. To most people I’m probably still a ruler but I notice the difference. I’ve lost 20 lbs but it’s weight that I’ve put on mainly since entering menopause. 5 lbs to go to get back to weight I was at 50.
I recommended the WHBM because they have several different styles (crop, boot, slim, straight, etc) and then regular and curvy fit. I thought I was a “ruler” body type too but I did try on the curvy style and in some fits it did fit better. I had equated “curvy” with someone with curves but it really fit better in the waist.
So the advice is to try things on I guess. You can’t tell just from a photo
I made the trip to the mall. Nordstrom has little selection of black pants. Tried WHBM but they weren’t for me. Rise just didn’t fit right. Ventured into Banana Republic and found a pair of Sloan style black pants. I’m happy with them and they will work for my needs. A good buy as they were 30% off making them $61. I was prepared to spend much more so I’m happy.
At my age my philosophy is if you find something that really works for you get multiples. Or in multiple colors. Who knows how long it will be before a fashion cycle/product becomes available again. I never want to be needing jeans when those baggy ripped up jeans are everywhere.
Don’t know why I’m having such a tough time with this but I’m all over the map on what to wear to the bridal shower honoring the daughter of a long-time family friend. I’m thinking I should probably wear a dress but I don’t want to look like an old lady who tried too hard!! Just need a general idea about what is appropriate and ‘current’. I can be happy wearing anything, really–dresses, skirts, slacks, whatever. Just a bit stuck on how dressy to be and see no indication from the invitation. What would be ‘safe’? It’s the first weekend in May, 1 PM. Help?!!
I might call and ask how dressed up they are planning to be. You don’t want to be the person in a lace dress when everyone else in in jeans.
Dressing for daytime showers is a crapshoot! What is the typical weather like at the place where it is being held?
I’m guessing your friend could give you her thoughts. If not, I would think you can’t go wrong with tailored slacks (black or, if you have them khaki, tan, etc.) and a cotton sweater or shirt that you like and you think is contemporary, youthful and you feel good in. Good luck and have fun!
I was just at a wedding shower luncheon. I wore black Rag & Bone stretch pants and a very pretty gray & black top and black suede and leather pumps. A lot of the ladies wore pants with pretty tops and some wore dresses.
If it was later in the spring and warmer I likely would wear a pretty dress.
