Dressing Young (Part 1)

@Southmom I sized up a half size in the Point and I got my regular size in the Flat (the one with the round toe). A friend wears the same size as me so I tried on her Flats and liked them more in person than on the screen. It’s amazing how they conform to your feet but don’t stretch out. Obviously they have no big arch support for walking for miles, but for my everyday walking in the office and a couple of blocks here and there for work, they are great.

@Techno13 you are of course entitled to your opinion on shoes “made from milk cartons” but if you have not struggled with foot cramps and painful walking, or had to wear unprofessional sneakers for a portion of your job before putting your “work shoes” on in a meeting, you might change your mind.

I have a closet full of $50 shoes that I hardly wear because they ended up hurting my feet. On a cost per wear basis, Rothys will be much cheaper than my DSW bargains.

I’m one of those who hated high waisted pants the first time and just won’t do it again. They are not particularly flattering - I’m 5’8", long legs but well proportioned torso. But the killer is … they hurt like heck to wear. A normal midsection expands and contracts when breathing, eating and going about the business of living. Having a band sitting in the middle of that area sends me into a panic.

Then again, I can’t stand wearing a regular style bra - no wires for this kid.

I like the half tuck/French tuck. Depending on the style of the top I’ll tuck on the side or the front. Not a big fan of the full tuck anymore since the body at 60 is not the same as at 25. Sigh

I also get my true size in the round toe and size up 1/2 size in the pointed ones. SO many of us at my work now wear them. They are great for travel- comfortable and still look polished. I get asked about them everywhere I go. I have a lot of pairs now- there is always a new color that I want. I guess I can’t ever retire.

I like the French Tuck - and really have done it for a long time. Largely because I think I am short waisted and HATE how long most tops are! I am more of a fan of boxy short tops. It’s a look I like for layering.

Even a lot of fitness tops are SO long. I’m not short - 5’7" but I have been known to cut some length off some dri fit tops!

I guess I do the French tuck and not the half tuck. I tuck the front in and not the rest.

I just got the Madewell jeans also these week. Love them. Will be wearing this weekend! Very flattering. Not to baggy around the seat and thighs.

I am so hesitant to order shoes on-line. I think the Rothys look so cute, but I can’t imagine they would fit my narrow feet. If a shoe is not sized a narrow, I need a lot of straps that can adjust around and over my foot. I have never had much luck with flats of any kind. Nor pumps. My foot is narrow (especially the heel) in width and up and down (if that makes any sense). Typically, in less expensive shoes that are mediums, my foot just slides forward.

I also feel that a lot of shoes that are available in narrows are old lady styles. I have three pair of Munro. They fit well, but they aren’t cute. They’re practical. Not inexpensive.

I did recently find some Sofft brand shoes at Dillard’s that were not narrows that fit my foot well.

These: https://www.dillards.com/p/sofft-marlyn-snake-print-leather-ankle-strap-sandals/509485773

I bought them in both the black and gray. But, they only worked because I could adjust them so much. I especially liked that I could adjust over the toes.

So, if anyone has suggestions on brands that run narrow, I’d love to know!

I wear ‘unprofessional sneakers’ to my meetings and all day at work. Prefer Ecco brand as they are well made and super comfy. Not cheap but not plastic!

I was able to go to the Rothy’s store in SF and am glad I did as I needed a 1/2 size larger in the pointy flats.

I am very short waisted and high rise jeans look terrible on me–there’s little room between the top of the jeans and my bust! Occasionally I wear a half tuck but I do struggle to figure out if it looks good or silly.

@Hoggirl , you and I are shoe sisters! I love those!

I sized up even in the Rothy round toe. I have a narrow heel and I find they stay on. I also have a pair of Allbird flats. I first ordered the same size as my sneaker style but found that size just a tad short so returned and sized up 1/2 a size. They also grip the heal nicely. I’ve never been able to find ballet style flats that worked for me. I think the Allbirds are a more casual looking shoe. For those who hesitate to order when you don’t know how they fit I found both companies to be great to work with for returns and exchanges.
I think my days of pumps and high heeled shoes is long gone.

@Hoggirl I understand exactly what you mean about your feet and I was hesitant about the Rothys. I have never been able to wear a ballet flat and even a loafer was hard - had to put an insert under the ball of the foot to keep it from sliding forward, and often an insert around the heel to keep it in. Most of my sandal and pump type shoes have to look like this or similar, with a strap on the arch: https://www.solesociety.com/tonni.html?color=black

The Rothys stay on for some reason. They give a bit but don’t stretch out. And yes, while some people harp on the fact that they are “plastic” they really feel like a soft canvas to the touch.

I love Sofft shoes - and I have bought some in narrow at Nordstroms years ago but they are harder to find.

@Techno13 - be glad you can wear sneakers to meetings. I do when I am solely in office but not everyone has that freedom 5 days a week. The Rothys are a godsend for me professionally. You do you and I’ll do me.

I also love the Allbird flats, but they are more casual.

I do enjoy leather, but I’m trying to understand how something being made from recycled soda bottle plastic is worse than wearing dead animals.

@MomofWildChild

I took it as a perception the Rothys are over-priced for the material involved.

exactly what Midwest67 said.

@Midwest67 Ah. For me though, I value function over all, so it is totally worth it.

@surfcity - I love those shoes you linked! And, yes, that is exactly the type of shoe I have to buy when I buy a medium-width. Fortunately, I like that type of style, but sometimes a flat would work better with my outfit! Your description of your feet make them sound very similar to mine, so the fact that the Rothy’s work for you is reassuring. I recently read on a Zappo’s review that Sofft is no longer making narrow widths. Idk if that is true or not.

@mom60 - great to know exchanges are easy with both companies. My ds bought some Allbirds. I’ll look at those as well.

Is there a perceptible difference between the Rothy’s and the Allbirds as to which runs narrower? Though given what all are saying about Allbirds being more casual, there is likely room in my closet for both brands.

I don’t think either run very narrow- I would say very true to size, but Allbirds are a little roomier overall.

I have a wide foot and ADORE my Allbirds loafers.

So…maybe not for narrow feet?
