Dressing Young (Part 1)

Great deals at TJ Maxx today! I got a pair of New Balance capri-length workout pants for $2! They are cute too, dark gray with a turquoise edge at the waist. Also a pair of Merrell sandals, several workout tops, several more long workout pants, a bathing suit for $20, and matching Ralph Lauren workout pants and jacket for half off. How’s that for an afternoon’s work?

That was after aerobics this AM. Back to Zumba tomorrow. Plus I only ate half my dinner at wonderful local Mexican dinner tonight. I am on a roll.

Merrell Encore Wool clog, the price at Zappos is $90, but I found my size and color at www.shoesonashoestring.com (when I google merrell encore wool) and the price for this month is $36 (price will drop next month to 28).
They charge $8.00 for shipping by fedex ground. Got it today !
It’s a winter clog but I don’t care, I love it so much !

I love my Merrell Encore suede clogs…hmmm, maybe I need the wool ones too. I wear mine as slippers in the house. So sturdy and comfy, and you can even take the dogs out or run to the store in them. Well worth the money.

A few pages late here…I hate hose but have very pale skin. I find that the self tanning moisturizer products work very well and don’t turn my legs orange. I am currently using Jergens brand as I will be attending a wedding this weekend. Unlike the regular self tanners you have to start using it several days ahead.

I was getting IPL treatments last year and the nurse - who tries EVERYTHING to stay young looking - stopped treatment and said, Why are your legs tan??

I’ll have to try Jergens. I have declared it to be spring and have started wearing skirts with no hose to work and my legs are bright white. Last year I tried a self-tanning product and the results were horrible.

I like l’oreal, it has a little shimmer in it too- cause I am very pale- but for me to go barelegged, that would mean I have to shave my legs ( I have blond leg hair- so I don’t always in the winter) & I think we are having a winter relapse so no bare legs yet.

I am a redhead so I never tan- or hardly ever. To get best results- exfoliate and defoliate first.
apply non tinted lotion to rougher areas let dry. Apply self tan lotion ( the one marked " a bit" of color dont contain quite so much colorant so easier- or you can just mix the self tanner with body lotion). Apply evenly- let dry before dressing. Use a washcloth or toliet paper to dab away excess, like between toes, backs of knees, under chin etc.

My mother in law never thought I was orange- but she would marvel that I had so much time to lay around in the sun that the * tops of my feet were tan!* ;)( I never corrected her)

I just spent $$$$$ on eyeglasses, but I shopped for them for months. literally
I have a very strong prescription( -11) so none of the rimless ones would work for me, I also have a fairly wide bridge for my face, and it seems like so many glasses are for narrow bridges.

I finally decided on getting frames through my optometrist- although I have looked all over town and over the web
( I do get a 20% discount and I did buy some really cute frames at Costco- but Costco can’t handle my prescription, so I am going to have them made into sunglasses for driving), but then I called to have them get me a different color to try on.
But when I came in to check out the new color, I also saw these [Face Face](<a href=“Face a Face Paris 2023”>Face a Face Paris 2023) -

They are a lot more fun than the Kate Spade wire ones I was going to get, from a company that * only* designs eyeglasses, and feel much more comfortable than the wire ( although a pair of glasses that cost more than my first car?- but half of that is the lenses)plus * French*
;)

Another Jergen’s fan here. I used it to keep my spray-tan lasting longer after a winter vacation.

I got my spray-tan from a neighbor who has a Tan Envy franchise (google Tan Envy). She has a little tent-like spray booth in her house and she applies the spray tan. It looks very natural.

I have never done any faux-tanning. I was sitting here thinking, “Why?” Then I realized that when I worked, I wore pants almost exclusively. And when I am out and about, if it’s really hot on a summer’s day, I might wear shorts or a skirt. But somehow when I am not working I feel that as long as I stay within a pretty broad social framework, I just cannot be bothered by the whiteness of my legs. It’s as though once I am not dressing for work effect, I immediately fall all the way to dressing just enough so as not to be arrested for loitering. I rise up for social occasions as required. Including shopping. Luckily, or I would REALLY embarrass my children more than I do already.

I am coming to grips with the reality that, while I never had “great legs”, they have become, shall we say, less “great” with age. I will spare you the details, but at least in my eyes, they look soooo much better with a little color.

Plus I play indoor tennis all winter and I can’t keep showing up in exercise pants, claiming it is “too cold” to play in a skirt ;)

I hate the smell of the Jergens. I recently commented to a friend on how great she looked in a photo. She said it was the spray on tan. I have never tried it. I am pale but in the summer I get enough light colored freckles that I feel like I can go bare.

Coming late into this discussion…Are we saying nylons are passe? Just not so fond of the pale color and the spider veins. Nylons seem to hide a world of sins.

Agree about the smell of all self-tanning products. I just do not like the way the chemical smells, I guess. But the Jergens Glow and the faster version (Express?) are both effective and natural looking.

ek, I hear you about the glasses. I just got a new pair (progressives, first time) and it took me so long to decide on what pair that I’m sure the store never wants to see me again. I’m still not completely happy with the ones I chose but oh well, life goes on. But at nearly $700, and not covered by insurance, I want perfection.

Oh, and I now need a whole new wardrobe of earrings to go with the new glasses!

Aveeno has a gradual tanner similar to the Jergens, with a minimal scent. All of the self tanners use the same chemical which, ironically, smells a little like burning skin. I find the odor really offensive (on myself - I’ve never noticed it on anyone else) and I have to take a shower before bed if I apply it after my morning shower. I hate the entire self tanning ordeal, but my legs - and feet - look substantially better with a little color.

“Oh, and I now need a whole new wardrobe of earrings to go with the new glasses!”

Not a bad problem to have, mousegray! I might need a whole new wardrobe for spring/summer. Most of my pants are too loose. I guess it is a good problem to have, LOL, but I hate to pay retail, so I do my summer clothes shopping in the fall.

Thank you all for the tips on self tanners. I was avoiding them because I did not want to experiment with my skin. I’ve seen too many bad results!

2 questions about professional spray tans: 1) do they smell bad too? and 2) can you ask just to do legs or is it a package deal?

Since I’m first joining this chat on page 93, I don’t know what led up to the comment about nylons but I am noticing more and more that I am the only one wearing them at the office. When did it become acceptable, never mind fashionable, to wear bare feet inside your pumps at work? I can’t see myself ever doing that, possibly because my legs are nothing to write home about.
