Dressing Young (Part 1)

I don’t think it smells nearly as bad as the self-tanning lotions. Where I go, you can ask for a “partial” - after we came back from vacation, I went back and had her touch up my face and neck - the only parts of my body regularly seen in public in winter ;)

If you google Tan Envy and find a location near you, you can call and ask - I expect each franchisee might have slightly different policies.

And just to be clear, I get the “light” or at most “medium” shade- I think I just look healthier rather than super tanned.

I think I might have mentioned it 30 pages ago, but yes, I was told by an executive consultant last year to “stay away” from nylons that they are only worn by “older women” and that I should wear tights or to invest in some really well tailored pants for interviews. Sure enough you did not see nylons this winter on any of the network TV anchors or many young executive women and I was looking because I’ve always worn nylons…sheer and nude or sheer and black or navy. I also invested in good leather boots to wear with skirts when I really wasn’t comfortable in pants to avoid the whole “old lady nylons” thing. I love skirts and dresses so it really threw me a curve ball. I was at a meeting with a bunch of professional women several months ago and we were all moaning about what to cover our legs with on the cold winter days. I’m glad spring is on the way so I don’t have to worry about it. It’s so ironic because I remember my first pair of nylons and garter belt in middle school and how “grown up” I felt…

Thanks for bringing me up to speed.

Shoes are so uncomfortable and sweaty if you don’t have a sock or nylons or tights. Luckily I nearly always wear pants in my business, though sometimes I wear gauchos in the summer. I never know when I’m going to have to climb a ladder. It’s also a good excuse to wear sensible shoes.

gauchos?
I would rather go barefoot than anything- so I do wear shoes without socks whether they be flip flops or converse or platform sandals.
( but when I am working I wear work boots- with socks- even if I have shorts on)
If I had to wear a skirted suit to work though- I am sure I would wear nylons.
I wear skorts a lot in the summer- they look a little nicer than shorts, but still can be decent when climbing a tree.

Sometime in the last 10 years (when I was a SAHM- ha ha), hose became outdated. Hated them anyway.I have actually gotten used to wearing shoes without socks, I just have the pale legs to worry about.
Gourmetmom- I will have to try the Aveeno gradual tanner. The only thing I dislike about the Jergens is the smell.

The fashionistas will have to tell me if I am still allowed to wear them. :)

I thought dark sheer stockings were still “ok”? Also, the shoes make a big difference, when wearing a suit/skirt. You just want to stay away from anything that hints of nurse or orthopedics. (Are nurses required to wear those clunky white leather shoes? Nurses everywhere should revolt.)

For those who don’t like the smell of the self tanners- you really should try the l’oreal sublime lotion- I think it smells good, not plasticy at all.

I also like the Alba botanica- it is not as subtle, but doesn’t smell bad and the color is good- but since it gets you quite a bit darker, it is more critical of the application.

My D told me 10 years ago that I couldn’t possibly wear nylons any more. I remember because it was at my 30th high school reunion, and this summer is my 40th.

I have very pale skin too, and never tan. I’d be afraid to try the self tanners, I think. How safe is putting chemicals on your skin that turn it a different color? (Not critical of those of you who do, just nervous about it.)

I live in the Seattle area, and few women here have tan legs of any sort. We are excited when it’s warm enough for shorter skirts and capris!

EK, thanks! I’m going to check them out.

Maybe I’m too old-fashioned, but I think that bare legs sticking out of boots look somewhat silly, unless, of course, the wearer of the boots is weeding her garden or feeding her chickens. I can never wear my boots without tights (own a lot of tights, from thin, lightly pattrened ones to cashmere-blend winter species).

Well, I wear my boots with tights too. Like the look.
And I have really white legs. I don’t wear skirts much in a professional setting, but when I do, I usually wear black sheer hose. I don’t like the look of clear hose. For casual outings, I wear slightly longer skirts with bare legs and ballet flats. I think my knees are a bit fat looking so I try to hide them! I usually wear capris instead of shorts in the summer. Well…time to read the diet and wellness thread here…losing some weight would give me a better shot at wearing shorts!

I’m with you, toneranger. My knees look like I’m 80. Lower legs are still shapely (if white) and upper legs are pretty good for my age too. But my knees! So I have to find skirts and dresses that cover the knee, and there aren’t too many of those.

Knees are just not one of the more attractive parts of the body
I still have major scars on mine from when I fell down roller skating ( the kind with a key) when I was 8!

I used to do that too, emeraldkity! I loved roller skating, and I would get huge big scrapes and scabs on my knees. I had metal skates with a key also.

I have a giant scar on the back of one knee from a childhood surgery. Interesting to think about - then, 10 days in the hospital with a huge scar. Now it would probably be day surgery with a tiny scar.

I bet cosmetic surgeons are already looking into something like collagen injections or botox for the knees! Because there is a huge market out there - lots of people of our age with less than pretty knees!

Ha, baggy knees here! I’ve always had wrinkly knees but since I started doing yoga, they’re less saggy. (baggy, wrinkly, and saggy, those have to be the three worst adjectives I’ve ever written in one post) Seriously, with yoga you are constantly pulling up your knee caps and I think I may have developed some muscle tone there.

Have a scar on one of my knees as well from falling onto a piece of broken glass when playing (trespassing!) at a construction site (I used to be such a tomboy, it is incredible how I survived my pre-teen years!). The scar actually got less and less visible with time, and now I can hardly see it, but my knees are not getting any better looking!

Hmmm…I’m going to have to go home and look at the knees of my teen daughters, both of whom have great legs…I don’t know that I’d consider anyone’s knees “attractive.”
