Dressing Young (Part 1)

I like boot leg jeans, but some shoes I don’t think they look good with- and you have to watch the flare especially if you are petite.
I like jeans that aren’t quite skinny- but are more straight cut, that I think are more flattering.
The trick is to wear things that don’t hide your body, because that adds bulk, but aren’t skin tight either.

Jeans can be hard to fit, because some materials stretch a lot- and the sales person will warn you to get them to be tight.
Unfortunately- some never stretch out quite as much as you think!

Agree with EK about the stretchiness. The jeans I got (Kut) do stretch though, and it helps! I guess they qualify as skinny jeans…but not really. They are much more forgiving and generously cut than the ones the teens wear. And it helps to get them in a dark denim. I have long legs so I think I do OK in them.

I think it’s important to try on anything you’re thinking of buying and look carefully at all sides in a multi-view mirror, especially if we’re not sure it’s a good look for us. Better yet, bring along a friend whose fashion sense you value and definitely have them take a look before you cut off any price tags. This is one time you want to try things on IN-PERSON before you decide you want to buy on-line. If it’s a good look, you can proceed and get the best merchandise at the best prices you can find.

Things that look good or even OK on the thin young kids often just look good or OK on them.

Skinny jeans: I am worried that I’ll look like Humpty Dumpty because I have a bit of a tummy, not a lot, but enough, above those little legs…

I’m one that says “no” on the skinny jeans unless you happen to be very narrow hipped, thin thighs and long legs and a decent rear end…adult “stringbean”…those are the “older women” that look good in the skinny leg jeans everyone else…not so much. I can “fit into them” (tall, not overweight, long legs) but even to me when I objectively look in the mirror I say “no.” I have some narrow leg classic jeans, not book cut but not the current “skinny” and not “mom” jeans, some Gap variation from a couple years back that I found because in general boot cuts are too wide in the butt (mine is rather pancakeish) and thighs for me…that’s about as close as I come to narrow jeans. I’m rather in love with the trouser look for my 50 year old body.

Skinny jeans look very nice on ladies with great legs! Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with perfect legs. :frowning:

HIMom, I had pretty good luck with buying stuff online, but that’s because I “research” the brands’ sizing and fit. I probably drove many a salesperson nuts because I’d try a lot of things and not buy a single item. My apologies to them :)

I buy stuff online too…one of the reasons is that I have a long inseam and many stores don’t carry it.

I have a bit of a “pankakish” butt (lol) which is why I tend to wear a long cardigan (open in the front) with my jeans…especially my “almost” skinny jeans. I did love the look with tall boots…but I probably wont’ be wearing them very much this summer.

I agree that you should look for almost skinny - thin, straight cut, but not stretched tightly over the skin.

um excuse me zappos- I love you but a jean that comes as a 36" leg is not a PETITE!

I have long legs for my height- ( gotta get some perks out of having my waist practically under the boobs), but the most I could wear unless I wore stilts would be a 32" leg.

Check Alumother’s site - she has a very interesting post about adding more color to one’s wardrobe (the picture of her closet looks eerily familiar… yikes, Alumother, did you sneak into my closet to take that photo?!) :)

I discovered that a brightly colored pashmina or a scarf is a great way to try out new colors and spruce up a grey outfit with a dash of color. Without my pashminas I would have never tried anything violet, pink, or butter lettuce green.

I love my skinny jeans.

And BunsenBurner, I blame you for making me want this:
[MICHAEL Michael Kors Braided Grommet Large Satchel at Zappos.com](<a href=“Michael michael kors braided grommet large satchel + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com”>Michael michael kors braided grommet large satchel + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com)

You just had to go and post about a handbag sale at zappos. Resistance is futile.

The original blame goes all the way back to oldfort’s mentioning of Kooba on CC - she got me interested in Kooba bags ;)

I have what I consider “modified” skinny jeans - DKNY - that I love with boots or with thong (sandals). I agree with looking at the fit from all angles AND asking someone else’s opinion, in my case my 21 y/o daughter is BRUTALLY honest. Remember, she is the one who offered the unsolicited, and previously not considered, assessment that moving my jaw forward made me look a lot younger.

Now that it is getting warmer, I may add another pair or two of modified skinnies. I like the freshness of the look. My figure flaw will be keeping the little tummy in check, otherwise I will end up with that lollipop look someone so eloquently described several pages back. Trousers rock. They look so good with so many different tops and make you feel polished and professional without being frumpy.

EK - if you didn’t live in Seattle, I would swear you were my local BFF writing these posts - red hair, fair skin, eye-catching bustline, high waist and an outrageous sense of humor. Love her, love you!

36 inch inseam…wow. That’s two full inches more than I need :)

Actually that’s the inseam of a young tall blond gorgeous teenager in our family. She looks unbelievable in her skinny jeans.

We’re a tall bunch…

Yeah, my 5’6" 14 year old is about to bump up from a 34 to a 36. She has freaky long legs, and fortunately loves them rather than hates them.

^^^ sigh My 5’8" 14 year old daughter hates being tall. I try to tell her how someday she will appreciate having legs that go on forever, but like everything else, she doesn’t believe me ;)

My D’s dream is to be 5’8"! D was a gymnast in earilier years, and when she was in elementary school, she had a young male coach who called her “super model” because of her long legs. I am convinced that that positive attention back in 4th grade or so really made all the difference. Who cares if your MOM tells you your long legs are terrific! But have a young adult male call you “super model” and that changes everything!

Isn’t that the truth.

Even though I was able to find almost-skinny jeans that fit perfectly (both Kut and Not Your Daughter’s Jeans were great in that regard), that cut really accentuates the thighs. And in my case, that’s not a good thing :)

The skinny jeans I’m talking about are the super tight ones (stretchy) that young women and men wear here in my city. They are pretty unflattering on almost everyone because even, or especially if you’re skinny, it accentuates every little flaw, like bow-legs, knock-knees, and my least favorite: the skinny girl with wide, skinny hips and a 4 inch gap between her legs at her crotch. Some day soon, these kids will cringe at photos of themselves in these jeans.

I do like skinny jeans that aren’t skin tight though. For boots, or cuffed, with keds.
