Dressing Young (Part 1)

wnp, get a second opinion. And maybe even a third. Learn as much as you can.

I agree with VH. With something as major as breaking your jaw, I would closely examine all the downsides if something should go wrong. If you were in pain now, or had great difficulty chewing food I could see doing it, but if not it seems rather drastic to me. YMMV, of course.

Agree, just do your research for the jaw thing. But if you get a great chinline in the bargain, cool.

I also own a coat I’ve had since I was 22. Black cashmere, from Saks. I’ve had the lining replaced, and a little reweaving done.

I’ve got short legs and long body, so I’ll be sending any clothes along to the similiarly figured:). However, at this point, I swear I’ve cleaned out almost everything I didn’t wear from my closet except sentimental favorites. That’s what having a daughter can do for you…

Thank you very much for saying I have good taste. I will have to tell my mother. She will know it came from here if I have any! I’m dying to go to Santa Barbara and see if she still has any of the clothes I remember. I’ll photograph them and put them on the blog. For her wedding to my stepfather she wore a peach Chanel shirtdress, oooh, so beautiful! So keeping some things, I’ve decided, just for the memories, is OK.

wip, Both my kids had jaw problems. When they got braces, the orthodontist put a Herbst appliance in their mouths to correct the jaw issues. I think they kept the Herbst in for about a year. It’s not a lot of fun but might be preferable to having your jaw broken. You can google Herbst Appliance and see pictures and details.

Alumother, thank you for your generous offer! Yes, I live north of Seattle, so if you need anything picked up in Seattle, just PM me! I hope to be able to stop by the store in a few weeks when H and I will be in SF (shhhhhh… don’t tell my H), so if I don’t succeed, I’ll need help because that shirt is fabulous :).

Please tell the store owners that a certain generation of women loves the classics with just the right amount of zing. The over the top stuff - not so much. And their website needs to be toned down a bit. Too much Java! :)

Tano fan here. I love their styles and the fact that they have so many different compartments/pockets. One word of warning though: the bags with a metallic sheen do not clean well. I bought one that was cream colored with a sheen, sort of pearlescent, and I still love it but H says it is too dirty to use anymore! The darker colors are probably not an issue.

Mousegray, I have a very soft leather Burberry bag also with a metallic sheen and it is very delicate. If I had realized that nothing could really touch it, I probably wouldn’t have purchased it, although it is beautiful - a dark, shimmery plum color. I do like some durability in a bag, because I hate even a spot of discoloration or wear.

I found an on-line shoe polish shop that carries leather polish in almost every color imaginable. I have a pair of strawberry colored leather driving shoes that had a little scuff where my right foot rides the gas pedal and nothing matched, until I found this place.

I’ll post the link if anyone is interested.

Thanks everyone for your sage advice. Believe me, I was blown away when the orthodontist suggested removing four teeth, breaking my jaw and told me I had a “shadow” under my wisdom tooth. I will proceed very, very cautiously. Since I had to have my wisdom teeth removed (actually only two, but since I was going to be under anyway I opted for all four), I am definitely NOT getting four more teeth remove.

The whole jaw thing was a shock, but I do clench my teeth at night, I have a lot of headaches, my bite is terrible, and it may contribute to mild sleep apnea. I am not rushing in - I just wish my daughter hadn’t told me I looked younger with the slight change in position - dang, the whole vanity thing reared its head!!

I am too old for the appliance. It helps during the growing process, and I think I passed that a year or two (or thirty) ago :(

I do intend to get a second opinion. My idea was to get invisalign, but that wasn’t even given as an option. Believe me, I will be cautious.

How about a night guard to help with the clenching? I just got fitted for one. My dentist tells me that after a while, you can’t sleep without it.

^^^I’ve worn a night guard for – oh, maybe ten or 12 years. I still clench, but now I clench on the night guard, so my teeth aren’t being worn down or shifting. Very useful appliance.

I finally got braces in my 30’s after listening for years to my dentist’s warnings that my bite and clenching would cause all my teeth to crack eventually. It made a huge difference, and helped so much in the headache realm. But I didn’t have to have my jaw broken - I guess that really changes the decision-making process! Good luck with it.

Pardon me while I hijack this back to the skin treatment subject!

Has anyone tried the Vichy line of retinol products? I’m wondering about the Liftactiv Retinol HA SPF 18. Is there enough Retinol to make a difference? I don’t handle the prescription strength well, so I’m wondering.

thanks!

I don’t know about the retinol products but I have to chime in on the skin care topic. D and I got pedicures on Friday night and was so afraid that he would rub off all my Jergins tan off my lower legs!

I’ve been using SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0, but my esthetician gave me a container of GlyMed 5.0 Retinol in an emollient base to try. I’ve used if for a few days, and far I haven’t had any adverse reaction. The creamier base is nice - I don’t seem to need as much moisturizer.

Mafool - check online to see the retinol concentration of the Vichy product. It should be at least .5% to be effective.

Attention purse lovers, Zappos has some nice Kooba bags on sale.

Hijacking this thread again–Someone here recommended under-eye patches (Esthederm) from an overseas retailer (Sasa). I ordered the patches and am having trouble getting the order to go through. I got a message from customer service asking me to fax a copy of my credit card. Seems like a strange request for a retail purchase. Sorry, but I can’t remember the name of the poster who recommended these. Is this common practice when ordering from an overseas retailer? Has anyone ordered from this retailer? Am I being paranoid?

Bromfield, I did a quick search of the forum - that was oldfort who recommended it:

That is really bizzare to say the least. I just ordered a bunch of clothes from an Italian site, but they have a distribution center in NJ, and my order is currently sitting at the UPS warehouse in Redmond… I’d proceed in caution if I were you.

Anyone has any opinions on skinny jeans on a chubby middle aged matron ? :o

munchkin, that’s a Don’t! Bootleg jeans are much more flattering. Skinny jeans don’t even look good on young, thin girls IMO.

^I get carried away and forget myself sometimes. I think I have a couple of nice boot cuts in the closet somewhere. It’s just that all these woman I saw looking so fresh and nice in skinny jeans recently.

Thanks for saving me a few bucks. :)

eta: Oh, saw the daughter this weekend on a home visit, she rocked her skinny jeans, as the saying goes.
