Dressing Young (Part 1)

^^LOL once they started making them with elastic waists and saggy butts the “capri” trend was all done. I like my one pair for bike rides because there isn’t any pant leg to get grease from the chain.

Well, Michelle wears capris(and I DO watch her since I’m pretty much the same height)

Amen, at least on my legs! This is what I wear most of the time in the summer.

^^Yes I have a pair of Gap khakis that are as old as the hills. Slim, straight legs, hit just above the ankle from the pre-capri era and I wear the heck out of those things when walking shorts aren’t appropriate. I fear for the day that need to be tossed. In general, though, capris do make women look shorter and also heavier because of where most hit in the mid calf.

No capri fans up in here either. Luckily, in Northern California, it’s rarely so hot that you have to wear shorts out and about. If I do, to date I’ve just worn regular Banana Republic shorts. As I make my way through my fifties, that is likely to change.

LOL, I shaved my winter white legs carefully this week after a long winter interval…yes I know TMI…anyway I’m getting little spider veins here and there…EEK…when did I get OLD? Then to add insult to injury, last night my 15 yr. old showed me a picture on his facebook page of a friend in the local grocery store and said that he thought it was “me” in the background of the picture. It was a “rear view” of a woman and she had a big butt…OMG…(it wasn’t me, but that’s what my 15 year old thinks I look like from the rear!!!)

my son’s bar mitzvah (low key, not formal at the clubhouse in our development) is in 3 weeks and I’m fuller in some areas than others, and didn’t want to spend much on my outfit, but wanted to be comfortable and look nice (and not old) at the same time. (mmm…is that too much to ask LOL) Anyway…to hide my slightly fuller rear and not so shapely legs, I am wearing a trusty longer but “slim” black skirt that I’ve had for years, but found a pretty but comfy pullover “blouse” that I am dressing up with nice jewelry and no one has to know my cost for the whole outfit (bought some cute shoes at Payless) was under $45. I wore an ugly stuffy “suit” 5 years ago to my daughters and I look back at the pictures and wonder how I could have worn that. ewwww  This time around I know I will be more comfortable since I will be on my feet and I will look somewhat “cute” LOL :)

I like shorts that come just to the top of the knee- they are close fitting, I either wear D’s or I make them from old jeans.

I also wear skorts quite a bit, that I get at REI. They are made from synthetic material and dry fast- they are above the knee, but because they look like a skirt, they look OK and are very comfortable.

Also for landscaping work, I have several pairs of synthetic pants with legs that either zip off or scrunch up- probably not that flattering, but not as hot as denim, and they dry when I fall in the creek.

I have some capri/cropped pants ( also shorts) from Arc’teryx, in the same cut that fits really well, but you really have to look for it.
Loonyz - Good for you, breaking out of the dowdy suit routine!

Michelle is so adorable! I like her in the slim capris that hit below the wide part of the calf. I’ve figured out that those look fine on me; I have long legs. But I also like what I guess would be called Bermuda shorts that hit just above the knew. Any shorter and the width could threaten to equal the length - LOL (just kidding, I hope)

I have long legs and they are in good shape everywhere, except for my definitely elephantine knees! I can’t possibly wear anything that shows them. So, shorts are out. I like capris. Mine are pretty fitted, and I don’t think they look “mom-ish.”

I also have quite a few skirts that just cover the knee. I found some nice print ones at Nordstrom last spring on sale and I bought three of them. That length is hard to find.

If you like Michelle’s style, this is a fun site. (Maybe I got this from this thread, many pages back.)

When capris were first “in”, Halloween fell on a Wednesday night and a couple of ladies dressed up for church choir. One broad hipped/bottomed woman wore a pink sweatshirt, pink capris, and a pig snout and ears…poor thing, she *really did *look like a pig from the rear in those pink capris! That image has stayed in my mind and although I admit to owning and wearing capris, I think that anyone with any curves can find a more flattering look.

The M.Obama pics that Toneranger posted a link to - I consider most of her pants to be “cropped” rather than “capri” - except for the last picture - the white one. In that case, I enjoy cropped pants alot and find them more flattering that the “capri” white she is wearing. But hey, if I’m lounging at home those are just fine.

Bermudas seem to make my thighs look huge so I do wear shorts - I have found a Levi brank khaki that is not too short, not too long and I will wear them all summer long for daily after-work, round the house, in the yard stuff.

For the past couple of weeks I have been living in a pair of jean - I’ll call them pedal pushers (?) - fairly fitted, just below the knee and a slight roll-up, with layered t-shirts and sandals or my new groovy Salomons I found at TJ Maxx. Super comfy and I think I look ok watching my son’s tennis matches, etc.

To step it up a bit in the summer, I will wear a skort type thing - jean or khaki - no colors.

I find capris so perfect weather wise, especially in places like SoCal/AZ in the spring or even in the summer when you are in air conditioned buildings and then back out in the glaring sun.

I do have one pair that hit right below the knee, like a Happy Days 50s style, which I think is good for curves. I wonder if the mid calf ones look good on really skinny legs? I wouldn’t know!!!

As we’ve mentioned before on this thread, use a full length mirror and peek around and try to figure out what you look like from the rear. With all pants, some cuts are flattering and some are YIKES on the same figure.

No. Doesn’t work for skinny legs either.

Missypie - or ask your 15 year old what you look like from the rear!

M3B- ouch!

Some of us have sons on the austim spectrum…they are brutally honest, so if anyone needs an honest opinion, just let my son know!

Last summer I started wearing casual daytime dresses - BCGB and Three Dots make comfortable, lightweight knit dresses that look very pulled together. With flat sandals, they are actually much more comfortable than pants and a top on a hot day.

This dress with flats is a good daytime look. Can also be dressed up for dinner out:

Gourmetmom, - it is a very cute dress! Does Three Dots still make their clothes in the US (it is always a plus for me)?
