Dressing Young (Part 1)

Anyone else not able to tell if they’re a vase or a goblet? I can’t tell what the difference is! Thanks for posting the link–that was a fun read!

sryrstress - I don’t even look at sizes. They vary so much between brands that they are somewhat meaningless. For example, a pair of Prada size 10 (equivalent U.S. size) pants is about a size 6 at J. Crew. I just eyeball the clothes before I take them into the fitting room.

Fit is the critical thing - if your clothes fit properly, you will look thinner, more stylish and feel much more comfortable.

My mom’s 49, and she likes to be a bit…young in the way she dresses, sometimes.
Yesterday we were running errands. She wore plain black cropped yoga pants, a tan cashmere sweater, and flip flops.
In the winter she’ll wear dark wash skinny jeans, her black argyle knit uggs, and usually a black sweater or her black denali north face.
She buys most of her clothes at NY&C, Express, Ann Taylor, Lord & Taylor, The Limited, Target, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Banana Republic, and sometimes she buys sweaters at American Eagle because she thinks that the sweaters made for people her age are too nerdy. haha

flip flops.

Didn’t her mom tell her those will ruin her feet?
;)

I second Gourmetmom’s suggestion - ignore sizes, they vary even within the same brand. My closet is full of altered and unaltered items ranging in sizes from 0 to 10, and they all fit properly - all have been picked out with the aid of eyeballometric analysis of items on the racks and tried on for fit. I regularly take pants in to be hemmed; somehow, the standard 34-inch lenghth does not work for a 5’6" person.

I have to stop going into Nordstrom.

What do they pump into their air? It makes me high and spend money.

Dangerous, dangerous place.

Must. Stay. Away.

^^^the web site can have the same effect. So much for the air hypothesis.

:)

I stopped at a Nordy’s on Saturday to pick up my perfectly hemmed pants. The place was a ZOO!!! I really regret not buying Nordy’s stock for $10/share when everyone was screaming the store would go out of business. HA! Now, someone please kick my butt and tell me to get off of Yoox before I order that jacket :)

I sold Lululemon at $14 about a year ago. Just checked the price= $44.10. I can never bring myself to buy their stuff. Too expensive. :(

I am not a big fan of our local (5 minutes from my house) Nordstrom. They have a large shoe department but don’t carry narrow sizes. They suggested I shoe shop at their larger store which is a pain in the*** to get to.

I have a wide foot. The only shoes my local huge Norstom shoe department has in my size are Easy Spirit trainers and those SAS shoes.

My mom has a horrible time trying to find narrow shoes anywhere in HI! She has shoes that regularly just fall off her feet. :frowning: Sister & I have wide feet but have a much easier finding shoes that fit than mom. Am glad there are comfortable shoes that fit me but feel for mom as she really works hard to find shoes that actually fit her 9N feet.

I don’t know what the SAS shoes are, but I stay away from Easy Spirit!

You know, when you have odd size feet, you go with what’s available and do the best you can. Choices can be very limited.

I read in Health mag this week that most women’s feet grow AND they get flatter due to pregnancy. Some hormone affects the ligaments. Yikes…i went from a standard size 10 to an 11w. BIG difference in choices. No fair! Do ya think it was cause my son weighed almost 10 pounds?

Anyway, I do Zappos and sometimes find stuff at Norstroms rack. I have about 15 pairs of flip flops since I don’t need a wide in those :). I love the pretty ones with accents.

Try being a 5.5 wide. They don’t make square shoes in many choices!

Lululemon - one of my vices!!! I didn’t know you could buy their stock - everytime I go to one of my D’s hockey games in Canada I get sucked into the vortex…but then again I am glad I am there often enough, I couldn’t believe how much their stuff is marked up in the US. At the local yoga store here the Lululemon is almost double in price.

Check the web site often, you may catch a good sale…

I have very small, wide feet. I sometimes find great shoes in the children’s section, good prices, too.

What is this lululemon that you speak of???

An update:

I received the Statera dress from Lole that I ordered last week (recommended by Bunsenburner).

It’s very cute and quite casual. I’ll probably wear it with flat sandals - good for around the pool.

It hits right at the top of the knee (I’m 5’7") and skims the body nicely. The 100% cotton fabric is of a fairly substantial weight, so it doesn’t cling or show through. It has cap sleeves, which I don’t normally like, but this sleeve works well - it isn’t tight or binding.

Overall, a great little dress for $50!

Here is what SAS shoes look like. I don’t think anyone is allowed to wear them if they’re under 82.

mp…ewww.

Actually, my 94 year old MIL has worn those for years. Poor thing.

Regarding easy spirit, I had a really cute pair of patent leather black flats a few years back (to add to my crazy large collection of black flats).
