Drill Comp

I just had a question on the recent video of the two basics competing where the girl won after remaining still after what appeared to be the command “about face” I didn’t understand why remaining still was correct. I must have missed something. Help?

ha, not to bash the air force or anythin… and i know this is horrible but…

in army jrotc at school, i’ve gotta say, we’ve got that flight beat in drill. i actually came in 2nd in a state-wide knock out drill, which is what we call them… i’ve always heard that flyboys cant drill worth a toot. haha :)

Probably heard wrong considering we made navy look HORRIBLE at the navy-AF game last year.

well, im just sayin… that may be the case, however, the army guys have everyone beat in drill  thats my own personal bias, although i wanna be a zoomie one day   lol

This past year in our state, my son’s AFJROTC drill team took top honors in both armed and unarmed drill competitions, handily defeating at least three Army JROTC units to get there. In the two years before reporting to the USAFA, my son won two drill downs against the top individual contestants in the state. He can hold his own with any Army cadet.

By the way, the winning cadet in the usafawebguy video, Jamie LaRivee, is the daughter of Col Dave LaRivee, Vice Commandant of Cadets, and retired Lt Col Marianne LaRivee, a member of the first graduating class of women from the USAFA. She comes from good stock.

Yeah…but why was not doing the about face correct?

Good question. I don’t know.

could be a break of bearing, SLIGHT correction in the feet, slightly off feet, who knows.

We have been wondering the same thing. Here is the link - http://usafawebguy.com/Video</a> Go to the video that says “Jamie LaRivee wins drill comp.” I am sure we just do not understand the commands and thought one of you might.

not positive, but i do have one guess. right after the next to last about face, i believe i hear the command port arms. thats fun everyone laughs because they don’t have their rifles. since this would then be an improper command, the basics would then have to wait for the command “as you were” before receiving another command. since the guy moved, he was wrong and therefore lost.

again, not sure if thats right, but its my best guess

Thanks, that seems to clear up the mystery for us.

I’ve never heard that one eagle. When they did that to us, we never had as you wear. I think he said “about face” instead of “about hace” so maybe that’s why they got him?

that could be, but i hear about hace even the last time. they never really taught us at usafa, but i heard them do it often, and i know the couple of jrotc years i did we called that (although jrotc was wrong on several things). but i know i’ve heard it from usafa ppl, and depending on who the cadre were who were calling commands and who taught them, that could have been it. its the only thing i can possibly think of

The difference between Hace and Face? Geez…that could sound the same almost. Earlier in the drill there was a command “about face” at least I thought it was Face vs. Hace and they both turned around. In the video it sounds the same…oh well…I guess they know.

another possibility is maybe it was a different guy who gave that last command. it sounds the same on the tape, but in real life it could have been another person. in that case, moving on a command from someone other than the designated command caller would make him out
