Drinking and Driving, an Epidemic?

skisaloman89 ,
I sent you a PM

Ski- As the originial poster, I feel compelled to respond to your series of comments. First, I was not attacking people who drink a limited amount. My own parents always enjoy wine/beer with meals in the later day. However, I do not think teens, even if they are in their later teens, always posses the willpower you claim you have with alcohol. And it is exactly that sort of attitude you exude in your posts, the “I-know-my-limits-so-what’s-the-problem?” attitude that can lead to teenage drinking fatalities. I want to make it clear that I do not see drinking alcohol as a vice or evil, but it’s when we put those potent substances in the hands of our youth that it can become evil. It is the same thing with sex, many people enjoy sex, but when sex leads to AIDs, STDs, and unwanted pregnancies, that is when sex becomes a problem. I only posted on the parent’s cafe to open a medium for discussing alcohol abuse among parents. Alcohol can be deadly and it is silly for you or others to insist that underage drinking is not a problem. It is a problem. It is a problem because the lives of four teens have forever been cut short and the enormous pain these families must be feeling is indescribable. I have no doubt these same teenagers said exactly what you said. And the blood is on the hands of those who assisted these teens in drinking. Parents or friends, they will always have a tremendous, inexorable weight on their shoulders. Underage drinking is a problem.

Six months ago, a bright young student from Cornel who frequently posted here under the name “Lucifer11287” wrote this:

Two months later, the morning after he attended a party at a fraternity, “Lucifer11287” was found dead of alcohol poisoning in his dorm room.

I know you believe that it’s different for you. It might be, or it might not. Either way, there’s no way in **** that you would actually know. “Lucifer” thought it was different for him, too. And now he’s dead.

well he is an idiot. He probably played drinking games and tried to out drink his friends…something i never do exactly bc i dont want to end up with alc poisoning. Why do you people feel that the human has no control over his body, god gave us free will and everyone of us has the ability to control himself in which way he wants. Also just becauseits illegal doesnt mean it is wrong. I happen to think that the drinking age should be 18 in this country. ANd i would never consider drinking “wrong” for a 17yrd old and “right” for a 21

I happen to agree that either we up the age of voting and enlisting or lower the age of drinking, because there is really no reason that one should be able to join the army as an adult, but not be able to have a legal beer.

Now, I understand that Skisaloman is really only a teenager, and I guess that makes some other posts make a bit more sense.

Ski,

Check your Private Messages. He was not an idiot. And he was sure that he had total control over his body.

what the hell does that mean…he was an idiot if he died of alcohol poisoning

Quotes from your posts:

“If someone can control himself there is no reason to not let him drink at parties, dinner, barebeques, with friends. Its really not a big deal. I am 17 i drink all the time.”

“Why do you people feel that the human has no control over his body, god gave us free will and everyone of us has the ability to control himself in which way he wants. Also just becauseits illegal doesnt mean it is wrong.”

“i dont drink and drive i think thats stupid. I would never do that, if i drink i make sure im safe about it and have enough restraint to know when to stop and i think thats the key to alcohol consumption being able to tell ur self to stop. Its all about whether or not u can control urself”

Quotes from his posts:

“Me and my friends are all very experienced drinkers, and we all know exactly how we get when we drink too much, so we go by those signs. For those we don’t know as well, we ensure that they throw up (so they don’t absorb any more alcohol from their stomach) and are responsive and reasonably coherent to make sure they won’t die.”

" I know most any alcohol related fact backwards and forwards.
I don’t take blind risks, and I’m fully aware of the risks I take with drinking."

“I do not drink myself into a stupor and waste days, months and years. Drinking is a recreational activity that I very much enjoy, but I keep it in its place - drinking only with friends and only when it won’t interfere with my other goals”

"I’m just counteracting the anti-alcohol posts that everyone else seems to have and saying that it is possible for alcohol to be a positive, enjoyable thing. That, and also showing that liability wise that drunk driving (or other dangerous activity after drinking, like drunk jetskiing) is by far the biggest problem because it is far easier and far more likely that someone will drink and drive and kill themselves/someone else than it is they will drink enough to stop breathing.

There are plenty of teens who are capable and competent enough to handle themselves and don’t need much, if any, supervision; the amount of supervision necessary depends on the kid. "

He also thought that those who die alcohol-related death are idiots, and that he wasn’t one of them…

look **** happens. If you want to compare us even more i am also a runner and cornell is my top choice school go figure rite? Listen stuff like this happens its rare but it happens its a shame, i hope it never happens to me, but its in my hands, my life is in my hands i control it and the stupid decisions i make will be mine to rectify, not anyone elses

^^Not as rare as you think - 1600 students died of alcohol related incidents at college last year - why don’t you just smarten up - you are NOT as mature as you seem to think - you sure sound as tho you don’t care who you hurt - your poor parents in the end - who have also contributed to your attitude. Hope you make better decisions than those who have gone before you.

57% of heavy drinkers have driven drunk at some point.

STRY makes one wonder what the % is of light drinkers - scary!!

1600 out of how many? Look godforbid this happens to me but it is in my hands just like it was in the hands of the cornell kid. I do not think i am that mature i just know what i am and i know enough to stop when its to much, just like when i am running on a bad leg i no when to stop before it hurts, but the important thing is control and if u can have the balls to stop urself from drinking when uve had too much u will be fine
