Hello: Has anyone driven down from around NYC to Tulane and back? We are thinking of taking a leisurely drive down to help our S slowly decompress to Southern state of mind.

But, we must get back in 2 days to NY. Is two days comfortable for a drive back?

I wouldn’t call it a leisurely ride. From NYC to NO is about 1300 miles. The roads are good though. Once you leave the Northeast the states get bigger :-)

We live just west of Baltimore and yearly used to drive to Chicago to visit family. It’s a 740 trip each way (1480mi. total) and, to save time and money, we did each leg in a single day. It was a 13 hour ride with my wife and I taking two hour turns, and that was on interstates and toll roads all the way. It isn’t pretty.

My wife will be on a business trip just around the time we have to get my D down to NO and I was going to get stuck with the entire 1200 miles to there by myself. No way.

So we’re taking Amtrack down and flying back. The cost for the train ride is about $300 for me, bid D and little D. We opted for the sleeper which added $280 for two sleeper rooms. The kids are looking forward to it as an adventure. Oh, it’s going to be a 25 hour trip.

I’ve made the drive down from just north of DC a couple of times - its two days but not two bad days. The roads are very good whether you go through Atlanta or Chattanooga.

I hate to say this but it is really a good thing for folks from the Northeast to get out and drive across this country. It could change their perception of things. This is really a BIG country and while the population. the media, and the power structure is kind of compressed on the east and west coasts I think they forget how much is out there.

I was born and raised in Ohio. Came east for college and spent most of my adult life in and around Washington. But I always knew there was a lot more to the country than what is percieved by the average resident of the twenty or so largest metro areas of the country. Driving across America even on the interstates, and especially if you are from the relatively compact Bos-Wasj corridor will open your eyes a little. There is a whole lot of fly-over country out there.

I live in NJ and my parents thought about the drive to school but then remembered their drive to Texas. I think it took them 2 and a half days to get back. In any case, 1300 miles both ways is a long while. I can tell you that I am not driving there myself.
