My D is overseas and needs to get a driver’s license when she arrives at Chapel Hill. Any suggestions, advice, information, requirements, contact numbers, closest DMV address, etc?

I understood from the DMV site that she needs to show proof of NC residence, which she does not have. Do you really need to be a resident to get a NC driver’s license? She can’t very well run around with her passport as ID!

As you can see, ANY INFORMATION will be more than I have. Thanks!!!

RioMom: I think you do have to be a resident of the State of NC, in order to get a NC drivers license. University students might qualify for temporary licenses, though. I’m not sure, but that would make sense. If so, she’d probably need a letter or something from UNC, verifying she’s a student there. I see you found the NC DMV site, but I’ve included a couple of links to pages you may have missed. Hope it helps.

If she only wants a license only for ID purposes (and not necessarily to drive), she will have her UNC ID card (and her passport). Here’s the link to the NC DMV and what it says about “temporary residents.”

You can use her dorm address for proof of NC residency. And I don’t think u’ve to be a resident of NC for driver license, if u have green card or permanent resident card.
