I heard about a law where suspension of driver’s licenses is used to combat truancy. Does your state have such a law? Is it effective? Do the school districts have to monitor more? Is it a good use of taxpayer money? Your thoughts, please.
As far as I am aware, this law is not on the books in Texas.
The story is from a county in Nevada that has high truancy rates.
I am dead-set against it. It is mixing two domains which shouldn’t be mixed. There is no universe where a school should have power over their student’s license privileges.
Punitive measures don’t work. If the students are 16, they can legally just drop out.
What they should focus their time on is figuring out WHY students are skipping. It seems to be a very low income area. Are they skipping because they just don’t care or are they skipping because they have to work or care for younger siblings? Are they skipping because they don’t feel safe at school or don’t feel like their school is worthwhile?
IMO, this will further disenfranchise poor students as, while there is an appeals process, it would require time off of work for parents/students- something they may not be able to afford. Further, if they can’t afford the penalty (be it be a ticket or whatever lost wages they have), they may be forced to drive on a suspended license and thus perpetuate ticket cycles.
