driving all way to school! ;(

i live about an 45 min from campus.
^upto 1 hr 30 min in traffic.

if i get accepted here (hopefully) i may have to drive day in and out instead of living on campus (due to family)

its not too much right? i mean, tons of people commute to work that are like hours away every day.

people do it. it’s not fun, but people do it.

live on campus for sure… one, it is not fun to drive in LA traffic… two, you’ll miss out on the college experience…

^^yeah. its just my driving skills aint that great lol…but when u can make ur own class schedule right? whats the earliest and latest classes start??

btw-regarding housing-can u make special requests like based on religon? (im muslim and i prefer to dorm with muslim-not that i mind, but for the sake of my parents…i heard they have like a muslim society there…and i know other schools have like housing with same groups, etc.

im trying to think of a way that would help my case for being at school and not drive everyday (gas prices man x b

dont do it.

I’m muslim too but I never made a special request (I’m not sure if you can?). Personally, I think it would be easier to dorm with other muslims because of having to wake up early for prayer, etc.

You might also consider vanpools. They have 100+ vanpools and there’s probably one that goes near you:
[What is a Vanpool?
Contact the MSA (Muslim Student Association) and they might be able to help you get connected with other Muslim students who want to dorm together. In general it shouldn’t be too hard if you’re a girl, from what I can tell. Though this will mean that you will be sharing an apartment off-campus. I don’t think UCLA housing will help you out here, but its worth a try… give them a call or something.
The Vanpool’s are probably a good idea if you will be commuting… though a month’s pass will be something like ~$300+ I think, depending on where you live.
I think your best bet is probably to convince your family to let you live on campus… lots of Muslims do it, its not so bad. Maybe you can dorm with someone from your school who is also Muslim, and possibly request a double in that case? Also, its only the first year thats so uncertain… but if you live on campus you’ll be able to make friends much more easily. Then you can just dorm with someone with the same religious (or otherwise) preferences as yourself the next year.

If being Muslim would require special arrangements, I would suggest renting a Studio apartment for yourself. Make things easier for everyone.

^ Won’t that be really really expensive?

Depends on your definition of expensive and what you can afford.

It seems to surprise people that living in an off campus apartment with 2 per small room or 3 per large room is much cheaper than living in the dorms. UCLA dorms next year are about $13,500 for nine months. People can easily live within walking distance of campus for about $11,000 per year, and that includes eating at a restaurant every day.

^^thanks-will def take all this into account.
btw-is there any way i can contact the MSA?
