I’m quite familiar with this route and wonder why the CT DOT chose to do this on a summer weekend…Good to know about it, though. I can’t imagine the inconvenience for travelers headed to the Cape or Boston…

momof3sons, H is an engineer for the CT DOT…closing the highway for the weekend to get this project done in one fell swoop saves months and months and months of stage construction…this weekend it will not be pretty but in the long term it actually is beneficial…

Yes we drove through there last weekend and could see what they were up to. They’ve got a whole chuck of highway bridge waiting to be swapped out for the new one. It was bound to cause a huge tie up no matter when they did it. But we were glad we were traveling last weekend!

They did this a few months ago on the New York side. It went fairly quickly with minimal delays. There is a simple highway detour if the traffic isn’t too freaked out and backed up. Going east, after Waterbury take the 691 towards Meriden and Middletown, pick up 91N in Meriden, and then 15 East (or North?) over the river and pickup 84 again. I often go this way even if no traffic or construction. 691 is really just before the bridge work.

@Hunt They have been very clear that the work starts Friday at 9 pm. You should be fine.

The detour plans look to me like its no big deal. From the north you just take 91S to 691W til you get back to 84, and from the south you take 691 East to 91 North til you reintersect 84. The map they provided looks like its less than 8-10 miles of additional distance, and its all interstate. Scroll down the link to get the detour map.

And looking a second time at the map, I think its worth it for northbound travelers to get off 91N at Weathersfield on RT3 and then take RT2 North, which dumps you on the east side of Hartford. My recollection its that the interchange of 91 and 84 in Hartford creates some creeping traffic.

Ahhhh…my daily commute. Though luckily not on the weekend. I agree that northbound taking I-691 to I-91 and then Rte 3 to Rte 2 and connect back up with I-84 east would be the best choice. However, if you find yourself detoured off I-84 at exit 30, just continue along Rte 10 through the lovely town of Southington. It winds it’s way back to I-84 at exit 32. The added bonus would be lunch at the Wood-N-Tap.

I often take Rt 3 across the river to Rt 2 and go west/north and pick up 84 in East Hartford. My GPS gives me fits about it, but it’s a pretty decent way to go. If you are not in a hurry, you can take the “Historic Ferry” across the Connecticut. Rocky Hill to South Glastonbury. Lovely little bit of yesteryear. My grandfather used to take the horse drawn coal wagon across the river on the ferry – but not in my lifetime. You will see the signs for the ferry coming up 91, and then on the Glastonbury side, take 160 to 17 North to 2 to 84.

Route 3 to 2 is Exit 25 off 91, btw. They’re doing construction on the bridge but it hasn’t caused too much of a backup to my knowledge (I drive that way to work but don’t go there on the weekends).

I’ve been there (exit 25 off 91) a few times recently – always better than going all the way to Hartford to take 15 across the river. I have traveled this route on weekday mornings and on weekend mornings. Your mileage may vary!
