The admissions office has pushed back the deadline for all application materials to the 25th, is that normal or do you think their experiencing a drop in applications?

i don’t see how. WUSTL has one of the quickest apps to fill out. If anything, they probably need more time to sort out materials and are allowing kids to continue to hand things in since they’re not quite ready.

I think deadlines should be respected. Perhaps some students “rushed” to turn their things in on time and now others can do it more leisurely. Is this a good idea.
I don’t think students should be penalized if recommendations are late, but surely they should be held accountable to ascribe to published dates for applications . . . in my opinion.

If you do a quick CC search you’ll see they’ve done this every year. On other school’s forums, there are several posts of kids who were allowed to send in things a little after the deadline at other colleges.

I do agree about the importance of deadlines though. In the cases where it’s entirely the kid’s fault, it certainly doesn’t bode well for their general preparedness for college.

Regarding drop/rise in apps, I don’t think they’ll know for awhile. I doubt it would be a drop given all the posts you see on CC about the big rises at WUSTL’s competitor schools, and it seems to get more popular every year from what you read. One thing you can do is use the IPEDS online and historically see WUSTL’s data… regarding amount of applications, test score ranges, etc. It’s a fun tool and you can compare other colleges, I did a compare awhile back and don’t think there was ever a year app numbers didn’t go up.

What is IPEDS???

^
it’s run by the government Dept of Education and is where colleges report all their data… test scores, admissions, ethnicity breakdown, salaries, faculty information, etc. US News rankings and other publications get their information from what colleges have to report to the IPEDS system every year. The best part is you can compare and rank several colleges together.

Which is exactly why it seems odd that the WUSTL admissions office would push back the deadline, if not for a drop in apps.

Or, maybe they see that one of their biggest competitors in the Midwest (UChicago) has experienced a huge rise in apps. So by extending the deadline, they can delay an announcement about their application numbers as much as possible.

To quote myself above:

If you do a quick CC search you’ll see they’ve done this every year. On other school’s forums, there are several posts of kids who were allowed to send in things a little after the deadline at other colleges.

I think they just want as many applications as possible.

Alot of schools have extended their deadline. My kids received emails from some schools where they had started the Common App, but didn’t send in by the deadline.

I think Emory extended its deadline too, and some other schools that I don’t remember anymore.

I also suspect it has something to do with this:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/855977-what-exactly-did-wustl-do-rankings.html

well, let’s see, one of the schools we received word that the deadline had been extended was Pomona. Their acceptance rate for females is 13%. Don’t think they have too much to worry about, but they still wanted all the apps they could possibly get. Oh my gosh, are they trying to game the system like WUSTL? Horrors!
