hi , I’m currently a student at De Anza College. I’ve already had 9 transferable units for last fall quarter. I got 5 classes this quarter. which are math 1A, Economic 2, Astronomy, Ewrt211 and Ewrt 211. My major is economic. I want to transfer in 2 years and this is my first year. I really want to transfer to UCLA or Berkeley. i also want to do the TAG with UCSD. I’m afraid that i could not get an A for the math because the math teacher is really strict. Today is the last day drop the class with no grade. Should i drop it and wait next quarter for an easy teacher, or keep taking it see if i could not do well drop with a W?

I’d say try and see how you are doing, unless you feel totally overwhelmed by the class and the teacher’s standards. If you have to take a W it will not harm your chances (according to many sources here on CC). But who knows, you could end up with A’s in all classes and show the UCs you are capable of handling a heavy course load (big plus to UCs like Berkeley). In the end its your choice, go with whatever you feel like is best for you.

If you are an economics major and wanting to go to ucla or Berkeley you need a high GPA. At least 3.8+. One W won’t affect you and even several W’s won’t affect your chances at UCs. I heard from a UC Berkeley’s representive that they don’t care about W’s. So if I were you, I would keep putting effort until you can drop with a W. And take a W if it’s for sure that you’re going to get a bad grade later…

For an economics major, it would be best to not delay taking math, since math is an important prerequisite for junior and senior level economics courses.

At Berkeley, economics majors intending to go to graduate school should complete Berkeley Math 1A, 1B, 53, 54, for which De Anza Math 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 2A, 2B appear to be the corresponding courses. You will still need De Anza Math 1A, 1B if you choose the “light math” version of the economics major. Also, the economics major requires calculus-based statistics, which [De Anza Math 23](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST) fulfills; it lists De Anza Math 1C is a prerequisite.

EWRT 211/212 = Easy
Astronomy = Easy
ECON = Some what easy
Math 1a = kind of hard

Just stay in math 1a you only have one hard classes besides only 8 more weeks.

The easiness of Astronomy at De Anza kind of depends on the teacher… As a whole, the math teachers at De Anza are pretty tough. It may be smart to stay in your present class, as you mightn’t get an “easy” math teacher next quarter either. Classes with easy teachers are always the first to fill up…

thank you guys, i just dropped it. i just cant feel i can get 930 out of 1000 scores based on 12 tests.

If you feel like you wouldn’t have gotten the best possible grade you could get in Math 1A in the course you were enrolled, you made the right choice! :)

@ op
if i were you, still attend lectures and see if the teacher will allow you to take tests just to get an idea of what to expect. some advice… you should start to think in terms of maximizing your available options as an econ major
