Here is what I would like to do. I just bought a new iPad 3. My first thought is to get IT to put a VPN on it. They’re not so sure about that apparently it hasn’t been done before. I want to avoid taking the office laptop with the VPN on vacation.

As an alternative to the VPN, I thought about using Dropbox. How do I go about doing that? Will I need Dropbox on both the PC and the iPad? How do I get it from the PC to Dropbox. redraft, and then get it back into Word on my computer. Is it even possible?

Be kind. These questions come from someone of a certain age who remembers living with iceboxes, party line phones, and the Lone Ranger on the radio. I have Googled this and read lots of stuff, but I’m still confused. Thanks.

You can put a VPN on an iPad. My husband had his IT department set up our iPad with the VPN configuration so that he can use it on vacation.

I also have Dropbox on the iPad, as well as on my Windows laptop, my Macbook Pro and my iPhone. When I create a document on the computer, I file it in the Dropbox folder. Then it’s available for viewing on any of the instruments. I’m only able to edit the documents on the laptops, though. I haven’t been able to figure out how to edit them on the iPad or iPhone – I’m not even sure that it’s possible. I guess I need to go to the Dropbox website and read the help file again.

You can use an app like CloudOn to open the docs in your dropbox and then edit them. It is still limited and I think there may be other apps that work, too. I use Splashtop to sign on to my notebook computer and access documents that way. The only downside is that on the 3G network it is sometimes too slow to work. Works well on a wifi.
