so i’m up for a presidential scholarship for viterbi engineering. i’ve had mono and i’ve missed alot of school and my calc teacher said that i might need to drop calc I (i’m taking this through cal state fullerton; not a high school class) because i’ve missed so much. i called admissions and asked them about it, and they said they would take it to a committee in about an hour. i asked if this would affect my scholarship and he said that he couldn’t say. he said he was just worried about admissions right now. should i be freaking out right now?

I also got mono second semester my senior year h.s. I actually think I was infected somehow during my USC Explore weekend visit - the timing was right.

Don’t worry. The scholarships will have already been decided before your grades come out. I probably would not have called and said anything… because how would they know?

Drop the class, take Calc I as a freshman in the fall, and focus on sleeping and getting healthy. My mom made me take some kind of immune booster pills - and I drank lots of Jamba Juices.

The good news is you can’t get mono again. And it might not seem like it now, but it is much better to have mono now than to get it when you are in college.

In June, when your high school sends your final transcript, you could have them also attach a note that you were sick with mono, and illness affected your grades, so USC will know that there were extenuating circumstances and will be much less likely to question your admission, scholarship, etc.

I wish that were true… I had it in the spring of 6th grade and again in the spring of 8th grade. I didn’t believe the doctors (because I’d read that can’t happen) and it turns out that once you have mono, you have it the rest of your life and most people never get symptoms again, but some people do. it’s nice to know that while you’re not contagious all the time, you can be contagious at any time without even having symptoms. nice, right?

not to put a damper on your day or anything.

haha yeah i’ve had mono before. i got it in seventh grade and missed like 3 months collectively throughout the year (permanent damage to my vocal cords because of the coughing). i had strep throat the week before explore and i took antibiotics to get better. i was still sick at explore but i faked it and did well with my interview. but i honestly passed out after my interview and completely crashed and burned for the next week.

and this story has a happy ending. i got a call yesterday morning saying that dropping calc wouldn’t affect my admission or my scholarship.

HOWEVER, this is CC and i can’t help but fret over something. he said that dropping calc wouldn’t affect my scholarship, which any normal human being would take as good news, but i’m a CC user. there’s an inkling of stress growing that says dropping calc won’t affect my scholarship because i already got Deans…somebody should really put CC Disease in urban dictonary.

Do your best, and what happens, happens. I don’t think mono should affect much, because it’s not your fault and doesn’t mean you’re any less qualified for admission or a scholarship.

Among the worst websites on the internet. A place to go where you can read about snotty geniuses who feel the need to brag in the ultimate attempt to make the “average high school student” feel pity on the themselves. An absolutely awful website that privileges and celebrates the Ivy League-Potential student, while completely forgetting about everyone else.
