Hello there!

I have intended to transfer colleges since enrolling at my current school (a great LAC that is weak in my intended field of study). Recently, I have considered “dropping out” after this semester and spending the months before Fall 2009 working at orphanages in Africa. I have been very involved in this activity for many years now, and I feel that I may finally have a chance to make a long-term (6+ month) commitment to working at the orphanages.

My question is this: what negative affects could be associated with this? Would it be smarter to simply finish up the year, only to restart next Fall (the program that I intend to enter into usually takes four years to complete).

For the record, the college that I want to transfer to is Marlboro College in VT, where I would enter into the World Studies Program.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this!

PS: If anyone knows of any other schools with strong development studies programs, let me know!

i would see if you get in… if you can defer enrollment for a semester and give the reason… dropping out runs the risk of not getting in.

It may be a good idea to take a leave of absence from your current college (that way you can go back if you change your mind about the place) and head overseas after this semester ends. If you are expecting to spend four years at Marlboro (or another equivalent college/university) it seems silly to spend money on another semester where you are right now.

The only reason that I can think of for staying put through the end of the school year next spring would be to finish up a two semester course sequence (such as a full-year laboratory science course) that would be hard to re-start somewhere else.

That was my exact thought on it, that there would be no use in completing the school year if I were going to restart next fall.

What does taking a leave of absence entail? Would I still be a technically be a student at the college?

Thanks again!

dude … think about ur future why the hell do you even care about the african orphans ?

Geez. It’s not like he’s permanently quitting school or anything.

And to the OP: I didn’t see this before, so I just posted pretty much the exact same question. I feel your confusion. It sucks.

Keep in mind, you need a certain number of credits to transfer to most schools.

World Changer, I know EXACTLY how you feel (just saw your thread). And you are correct, I fully intend to enroll back in school next fall.

Khalidns, for me, its far more important that I try to make a sustainable difference in the lives of others rather than provide a kushy lifestyle for myself. When all is said and done, it does not matter what kind of job I had or what car I drove. What matters is what I was able to do with my life and what impact I had on others.

Plus, those orphans are so damn cute.
