Hi I am currently a freshman at a community college in San Diego. I will be dropping all my clases because I need to move to Michigan where I will be working full time for a year to establish residency. After, I will start community college at Michigan. My questions is, when I enter, will I be considered a freshman or a sophmore? Thank you all for your help.

Community colleges don’t usually view students as ‘freshman’ or ‘sophomore’, because so many students are part-time or do not enroll continuously. It therefore doesn’t make a lot of sense to call someone who is in their second year of taking one class per semester, a ‘sophomore’.

Instead, colleges and students look at the number of credits earned, compared to what is needed to graduate. A typical semester-based 4-year college requires 120 credits to graduate, i.e. 15 credits per semester for 8 semesters. So, after you have earned 30 credits, you can think of yourself as entering your second (or sophomore) year. After you have earned 60 credits, you should be able to obtain an Associate’s degree (assuming you took the right mix of courses) and transfer to a 4-year college as an entering Junior.

It depends on your credit hours.
