Dropping versus Failing: Which looks worse?

I really messed up this semester. I’ve been in a bad relationship and just depressed overall.

Anyways I just failed two tests: one in organic chemistry and one in calculus. I will probably fail the classes now so I’m considering dropping, but the rule at my school is that this late in the semester to drop one class I must drop all my classes.

So what would be worse suffering two F’s to my GPA or dropping all my classes for the semester?

Dropping once or twice is better than failing. Dropping twenty times… not so much. Don’t make a habit of it and you will be fine. As far as dropping a whole semester, do you really think you can’t at least pull a C? Does your school have grade replacement for failing grades?

Why drop ALL your classes? Withdraw from the ones you’re failing. Complete the rest and get As. Honestly, a bad relationship is tough but it’s no excuse for failing a semester. We’ve all been there on the bad relationship thing and often the worst part occurs toward the end of the year (i.e., breakups, the awkwardness post-breakup, post-breakup DTRs, etc.) but most manage to make it through ok and with minimal impact (admittedly, I think my semester GPA after a breakup dropped to its lowest point around a 3.6 instead of being up around 3.9 where I usually kept it, so I definitely understand that stress can hurt your grades but you’ve got to remain strong and persevere). You’ve got to figure out how to manage stress in your personal life and schoolwork (or a professional life) – and vice versa – or you’re going to have constant problems throughout life…and probably end up seeing me on the psych unit eventually!

I don’t have much in the way of advice, I just wanted to point out to previous posters that OP said they HAVE to drop ALL classes in order to drop ANY classes, so the advice saying “just drop some of them” is useless.

Get to an academic advisor now. Today. Before lunch. You may not be in as bad a shape as you think. Or maybe you are. But this is a local, personal, unique issue. Get local, personal, unique advice.

^Petition said school policy. It’s not really a standard across schools (i.e., I have never heard of such a policy, although you ARE very late in the semester, so many schools would prohibit withdrawing altogether), so pointing that out and being forceful but polite could get you an exception. I’d go to the registrar and file a grievance and work your way up to administration. Honestly, if you make a fuss over a school policy (esp. if you can get others to join you in it) and have good supporting evidence, getting school policies changed is definitely possible (not easy, but possible). If you would fail 2 classes, the effort might be worth it. Withdrawing from all your classes due to a minor stressor looks pretty bad as does failing two classes over one (sorry, relationship troubles are generally pretty minor in my book when you consider what many people go through).
