I am associated with the DPS here at Iowa State University and I just wanted to share some of the trends we have observed here:

Between 2008 and 2012, drug/narcotic violation arrests on our campus has risen 282%. One thing I have observed about the incoming freshman class is the total “I don’t care attitude”- they drive drunk, they drive high and there is little concern for others or themselves.

I have lived in this community(Ames) for many years and I do not remember being this bad.

I would like to point out that arrests for underage consumption and possession of alcohol has also hit historical highs.

DUI’s about 10 years ago used to be few and there was more shame associated with it- nowadays, the number of DUI’s here in Ames is higher than ever and once again, there seems to be little concern with others and the consequences of such acts

Often times, parents have no idea that their kids have been arrested or cited because these incidents are only reported to our DPS and then published on our newspaper police blotter later.
