drugstore dispensing wrong number of pills?

Yep. They are visible from the counter.

I went to a pharmacy years ago that made repeated mistakes with my prescriptions, including giving me the wrong thing. It was a chain. I switched pharmacies and never had another problem. I hope I reported it, but I don’t remember.

It happens a lot.

But I’m surprised that you got 40 instead of 60. Usually, the mistake is 30 instead of 60 because the pharmacy employee is counting out pills for many, many one-a-day prescriptions and makes a mistake with a two-a-day.

Since you’ve encountered discrepancies twice, I think it would be reasonable to ask the pharmacist to have the pills recounted for you if you are in any doubt about the next prescription.

I wonder if somewhere in your records at the pharmacy, the quantity was entered incorrectly and that’s what they are going off when dispensing refills even though the label is accurate.

Who knows? I should be able to find out something tomorrow. In the future, I’ll learn what 60 pills look like and then always at least eyeball the bottle to make sure the number is at least close.

I called this morning, and was told to come in with the bottle and they’d give me 20 pills. So I did, and they did. They seemed sort of baffled by this, not as if it happens regularly and this was just one more time, so I don’t think it’s a common situation. Which makes last month, when it’s possible that the same thing happened, but I can’t be sure, even stranger. Twice in a row for me but not for other people?

I’m kind of surprised there isn’t a check in place. At the Pharmacy we normally use someone fills the prescription and then someone else checks it and recounts the pills.

I’m certainly not an expert, but from what I can see they don’t have that many people working compared to the number of prescriptions they fill. There are steady streams of customers both inside and at the drive-through, and when I’m inside I can see dozens of prescriptions waiting to be picked up. There is usually one pharmacist and 2-3 other people working - not sure if they’re techs, two of them seem to just take the orders and ring up the sales, the other is working in the back so maybe she’s a tech.

Refills may be being filled at another location and sent to the store for pick up. Next time you pick up your script have THEM check the number in the bottle before you receive it.
