Drummers in Thornton School of Music

How many drummers are accepted at the Thornton School of Music at USC each year on average and what is the low range of GPA and SAT/ACT for admissions for drummers? Thank you.

What major program are you wondering about specifically?

I am interested in the Popular Music Program (BM)

I’m in the pop program… I don’t know for sure how many they accept but they like to keep class sizes small. 4-5 drummers per year end up attending so maybe they accept around 5-6ish? Last time I checked, upwards of 500 kids auditioned for all instruments and 25-30ish got in. Again I don’t know for sure but I think that’s pretty close… I can tell you that the faculty in charge of your acceptance into the program care much more about things like your audition, what they think you could bring to the program, and your potential to succeed and flourish in the world of popular music than they would about your GPA in non-music classes and SAT scores, but the university itself still has to accept you academically. The music school can push for students they really want, but if they don’t make it within the grade/score range the university finds good or acceptable, it’s game over. Also keep in mind that if they have one spot left and they like you just as much as they like another drummer, your transcript/scores might end up being the deciding factor if everything else is comparable.

While I’m not a drummer, I can give you my hs stats: 3.5 uw gpa, 4.2 w gpa, 2000 SAT (1360 without writing, I think?) I hope this helps.

Thank you very much. That is the type of straight information I need. I think I will be in the lower end of the acceptable range of GPA and test score. I am hoping my audition pushes me over the goal line. Thanks again and good luck with the rest of college and with your career.
