This makes me sick. And to think, his friends tried to stop him, and he fought them off and drove anyway.

how horrible!

Up to five people tried to stop Kania from getting behind the wheel in Chapel Hill, Nieman said, and the effort ended in a physical altercation, with one person being knocked to the ground. The people tried to take Kania's keys but wound up grabbing his cellphone, thinking that would prevent him from leaving, the prosecutor said. Arrogant!

When I was 20, an old friend attending another university got drunk at a party. His friends took his keys from him. They didn’t know that he had a “hide a key” under his car, which he retrieved and drove anyway. He died in crash that night. Thankfully, no one else was hurt. He hit a tree.

Horrible stories. So sad for all the families.

Maybe the statistics don’t bear this out, but it seems like often the drunk driver is not as badly injured as his victims. Why were the three victims in this situation killed, but the perpetrator seems to have only relatively mild injuries?

@Nrdsb4 being drunk relaxes all the muscles in the body so when they get into a crash they have a higher chance of surviving because there body is relaxed. A simple google search should give you a more in depth answer.

Arrogant? Not necessarily, just drunk.

How terrible.

Senseless and stupid. Sadly it will happen again somewhere.

Frankly, I’d be fine with the requirement that after he gets out of jail, he be required to wear a alcohol-detecting ankle cuff for the remainder of his life with a prohibition against ever drinking alcohol.

Chandler Michael Kania, 20, of Asheboro, also was charged with three counts of felony death by motor vehicle and one count of felony serious injury by motor vehicle. He was previously charged with driving while impaired, driving the wrong way on an interstate, careless and reckless driving, driving after consuming alcohol as a minor, possession of alcohol by a minor and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.

Anyone think he’ll be getting out of jail soon? I think with the evidence that people tried to stop him from driving, but he insisted, will prevent any mercy.

I don’t know how harsh the state of NC is with drunk driving deaths, but 3 innocent lives were lost.

I don’t know why drunk drivers often seem to survive while the other car’s passengers are killed, but it does seem to happen a lot. Not always, of course.

In this case, I think the drunk driver has two broken ankles.

another sad aspect is that someone called 911 to warn that a car was driving the wrong direction, several miles before the accident, but obviously he couldn’t be stopped.

something that might be controversial…The people who tried to stop him from driving…Obviously, they should have called 911 to warn that their drunk friend was driving, but obviously there is a HUGE pressure not to do that. What can be done about THAT???

He should be sent to prison-----for a looong time. Driving drunk is no different than firing a gun into a crowd, the chances that you will kill someone are huge.

I do feel sorry for his mom, heard crying in the courtroom

How was he allowed to have a licence after his previous charges? What a sad story, for everyone.

^^
Yes, it’s hard not to feel bad for the parents. Of course they feel horrible for the victims and their families, but they also know that in some ways, they’ve lost their son, too.

Well considering his parents were able to bail him out, he may get a slap on the wrist like that kid from Texas, who was afflicted with a case of " affluenza", remember him?

??
He had previous charges???

^The language is confusing. Perhaps the author meant he was “initially” charged.

That’s the way the article reads, but on second glance, he got certain charges before the murder charges. My mistake.

blood alcohol level .17 Twice the limit.

Nieman adds he considers the state’s case to be very strong and Kania could face up to 65 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

While he may not get convicted all charges, he’s being charged with 3 counts of 2nd degree murder.

What can be done to encourage friends and family to report when they know an intoxicated person is getting behind the wheel?

We all know that many people won’t do that, particularly if they fear some revenge.
