Pros- cons
Recommendations for dark colored straight hair.
My goal is to hopefully shampoo a bit less to prolong my hair color.

Gosh, brings back memories of minipoo.

^^^A rather unfortunate name. To me, minipoo is what a chihuahua makes when you take him for a walk.

Sadly, they all suck if you have thick, oily hair! I’ve done a lot research (and wasted a lot of money).

Maybe this will be of help to some others with drier locks: <a href=“The 11 Best Dry Shampoos That Actually Clean Your Hair”>The 11 Best Dry Shampoos That Actually Clean Your Hair.

Personally, I’ve taken to wearing hats on the “off days.” :-)

None of them are great, but try Batiste for brunette hair.

I have used Ojon and Tresemme. I usually have to dampen and blow dry the hair around my face too but at least that only takes a minute.

I use Umberto Dry Clean shampoo, available at Target, with great success. I wash my hair about 4x/week and use the dry shampoo to preserve my color (I have blond highlights and toner to eliminate brassiness). Dry shampoo does give a dusty pale overlay to the roots because it’s basically oil-absorbing powder, so darker-haired people may not get as good results.

This is the trick I use…

when hair is CLEAN (just washed and DRY), and you’re going to bed, take some cornstarch baby powder and sprinkle on your hands…run your fingers thru your hair by your roots. Even if you have dark hair (I do), even if some powder shows, it will no longer show once you wake up the next morning. This keeps the oils at bay…before they make your hair look dirty.

extra benefit…your hair will look thicker.

I love this trick when traveling and hair-washing/styling is harder to do.

Try Oribe dry texturizing spray. It’s a unique product - not really a dry shampoo, but it gives dirty or limp hair volume and texture, and makes it really easy to style. It’s expensive, but a can lasts a very long time.

I second Gourmetmom’s suggestion! It is a great product.

^
Wow…that’s pricey. How many uses per can?

I get a container of cornstarch baby powder at the dollars store for a buck and it lasts a year or more…lol.

But can you spray a cornstarch powder and run out of the door?

I figured that a can will last until my hair falls out. :)

lol…well, in a pinch, I have put some on a brush and ran it thru my hair.

How long will one can last?

Reporting back- went to Ulta and was looking at some of the expensive dry shampoos. The young salesperson recommended an inexpensive product Batiste that Roske suggested. I bought the brunette. I figured for 7.99 what do I have to lose. It is okay. I don’t feel like my hair is freshly washed but I do feel it takes enough of the oil out that the top of my head isn’t flat. I don’t find it smells. If anything my biggest complaint is that it leaves my hands really dirty. I wouldn’t want to use it if I didn’t have water and soap handy. For example if I was camping somewhere with little water.
It works for the days that I am feeling lazy and don’t want to shampoo in the morning. I usually shampoo every other day. It gives me a third day between shampoos when I normally would pull it back in a ponytail.
It won’t be a regular product but in a pinch it will do.

A can of Oribe texturizing spray lasts me about a year - I use it about once a week. I have fine, blonde hair that soaks up any oil or product. I wash everyday, and by evening on a hot and humid day, my hair is limp and blah. A few shots of Oribe at the crown transform my hair into something manageable and full of body. For anyone serious about dry shampoo, this is a must try product. It’s really not like anything else I’ve tried.

@mom60 is it a spray or something liquid that you rub thru your hair? Why is it a color?

edited to add…I just looked on Amazon. Yes, the brown on your hands is the color that is supposed to help hide gray roots.

Looks like there is also a colorless version…use that when water isn’t available to wash your hands.

My can of Oribe is still going strong after a year of use (I probably use it less often than Gourmetmom does since I do not have the joys of NE humidity). I too have fine, straight, dirty blonde hair that is really hard to keep looking good. It is a great product. Hands down.

Can’t wait to try the Oribe! I’m another one with fine, limp dirty blonde hair (well, not quite as dirty-blonde after my colorist is done). I’m always looking for something to add volume. Would you use this product in the morning on freshly washed hair? What else do you use?

My hair is hopeless.

I had good luck with Kerastase brand products. I usually do not remember the name of the specific line I use, so I rely on visual memory, but by the time I run out of my shampoo, Kerastase usually changes its bottle design… So I just ask my hair lady to pick the right ones for me. I think they are called the Volumactive and come in green bottles - these Kerastase shampoo bottles last forever… I also use this spray once in a while to give my hair more volume:

After reading this thread I bought the Oribe suggested by Gourmetmom and I have to report that I really like it ( and happy that I do because it is pricey! ) I had given up on finding a dry shampoo that worked for me. I’ve tried the Oscar Blandi powder and Suave and Pssst sprays. I have a friend that swears by the Oscar Blandi but it’s a white powder and with dark hair it’s ridiculous to use- my friend has blonde, fine hair. I have a very thick head of dark hair which is about shoulder length and although I don’t yet have to color I despise spending even 15-20 minutes blowing it dry all the time. Yesterday I played 2 hours of tennis and needed to shower quick and head to a meeting- I sprayed the Oribe on, fluffed with my fingers and then spent about a minute running my wide plated flat iron though it and it still looks great today. So, thanks for the suggestion!
