Duck Dynasty’ vs. ‘Modern Family’: U.S. Cultural Divide Interactive Mapping

My apologies if this was posted before, but I just stumbled on this when doing some research and found it fascinating. It shows the origins of viewers of a couple dozen “popular” television shows. I don’t watch much TV, but the rest of my family does and I’m always interested in what their “must watch” shows are.(South Park, Deadliest Catch and Game of Thrones are biggies with the guys) The only show I watch with absolute regularity is not on this chart, but it’s Sunday Morning on CBS. Much of what shows up feels obvious, but I still found it interesting.

Interesting charts. I had never even heard of many of these shows. I watch Modern Family (but finding it not as fresh as it used to be) but I’ve also seen a few episodes of Duck Dynasty (and thought Willie was a charming sort of guy). So I guess I’m a middle of the roader.

I’m not too surprised by the results overall, except that Bones is popular in rural areas. I haven’t seen it lately, but the main character is an atheist who is very vocal about her views (or at least she was in the first seasons).

I too love CBS Sunday morning!

I saw this weeks ago when it was in the NYT. I wasn’t suprised by the findings.

The only one that surprised me is the Midwest concentration of Big Bang.

I haven’t heard of most of these shows, but watch a few that would not seem to appeal to the same audience.

Many of these shows do not sound familiar to me either. I find it interesting that Atlanta is often a white spot in the middle of pink or a pink/purple spot in the middle of white…really points out the cultural differences between Atlanta and the rest of Georgia. If you could zoom into Atlanta I think you would also see very sharp contrasts between municipalities/counties based on ethnic makeup and average age. My kids don’t watch anything my husband and I watch, in fact they watch very little television live except sports and do mini-binges of streaming shows when they have time - again, not the shows we watch.

Fascinating. We don’t watch any of those shows or much TV at all. Obviously the rest of my state IS watching TV.
