Duggars in the news.

@ donna l-

I don’t want to sidetrack this thread either, and it has nothing to do with conservative or being republican in a broad swath, people of good conscience should be sickened by this and they are. The people who are defending the Duggars are much like those who even to this day defend the Catholic Church’s handling of priests sexually abusing kids and the other abuses, they are trying to defend the indefensible and for much the same reason, it is about protecting some perceived group that is ‘us’, and it happens all the time across the spectrum.

If I were in Jana’s place I’d want to get away too! From what everyone says if she is the Cinderella why wouldn’t she want freedom from the responsibility of a large family she didn’t choose to have for herself. No wonder she hasn’t been “courted” like the younger ones - she’s too valuable to have around. I just think - hmm…no money, no education, no skills outside of raising a brood of children and housekeeping. How will she possibly feel like she has the option of making it out there on her own? She probably doesn’t even know anyone outside her family and approved outsiders.

Hell, she can come and stay with me for a while. I’ll help her get into college, even.

You would also think that since Jana is the oldest, that JB would have “selected” a courtship partner for her already. Unless, she has spoken and said “no” to help from the family and feel she would like her prince to come via more typical channels than Papa Bear picking him out. That paired with the idea that she was the one who asked to go to college and the fact that she often seems the less showy/present in front of the camera makes me wonder if that is her quiet way to rebel or choose her own path.

Michelle sure better appreciate all Jana does, that’s all I can say!

I think I have read that there were courtship prospects for Jana - but she was not interested. My fear for her is that she will be living with her parents forever - taking care of the children - and then taking care of her parents down the road. I just wish the girls had more options.

I’m pretty sure everything I’ve read has calculated the ages of the victims and it has been determined Jana was not one. Jill and Jessa have admitted to it; the youngest victim was five, and the fourth victim was between the ages of Jill/Jessa and the youngest, so it couldn’t have been Jana.

Yes, as far as that’s why she would want to get out (other than being the Cinderella)), that is speculation. But I’ve heard lots of stories of survivor’s guilt in families where this occurred and I suspect it’s common.

The Duggars are so fake. I love how they conveniently decided to have their son make right with the law as soon as the statute of limitations ran out. And shame on Kelly for allowing them to speak as if the interview was just some attack by the liberal media.

How could she allow JB to say things like “It was over clothes and oh, the stuff under the clothes was just two incidents”?

Sexual assault is sexual assault.

Hell, Jana might be gay. She might be transgender. She might be really really smart and simply want to learn more about the world. She might have had experiences that her family doesn’t know about – it’s possible. She might have a secret friend who provides her with clandestine copies of The New York Times. She might be liberal!! She might be an atheist!!!

Haha, @VeryHappy - I will have to say that I’ve thought of a couple of those as options - but your thinking is a little more creative than mine!!!

Maybe her parents do know but it doesn’t fit what they want to be their public image.

Maybe she’s involved with someone on the crew?

I have always liked Jana but gained some additional respect for her this season with the way it seemed (or the way they portrayed her) when Josie (the youngest, age 5, who was born extremely premature) had her seizure at home. It was Jana who handled her while waiting for EMS and who appeared to be the one to stay by her side in the hospital until JB and Michelle got home from their out of town trip. Even Grandma Duggar seemed to be in the background of that incident, but Jana seemed to take charge.

Some years ago, the interwebz were full of stories about Jana going/being sent to one of the ATI Journey to the Heart programs to “work through” her feelings of being exploited and wanting to leave the family home. She also had some body image issues and her dieting was a subplot for a season or so.

I just really hope that the parents are not purposely preventing jana from courting because she is the most capable and experienced to help run that family. Personally, I think it is unreasonable to require those girls to do all that they do. Being a mother to younger children, cooking for a family of 19 and attending to household chores at the level those girls do seems very unfair to me. That is not what the teenage years are for.

It wasn’t their choice to have 19 children and imposing this sort of responsibility on young girls kind of robs them of those carefree pre-teen and teenage years.

I don’t remember the Jana dieting subplot at all…they talked about Michelle and her bulimia issues when she was younger - don’t remember anything for Jana.

@abasket there was a Weight Watchers tie in for Jana, Michelle, and even Jimbob (she said, red-faced at having this level of knowledge)

They need more than Weight Watchers. They need to get off all that processed crap they eat… and - all.that.sugar!
They have a soft drink machine in their house.

Remember the trainer Josh had a season or two ago… the trainer really tried to teach Anna how to pick healthy, clean choices for food, and Josh thumbed his nose up to a lot of it. That was the closest I’d seen any of the Duggars trying to eat healthily.

I’m having a hard time believing that Jana wasn’t molested too. I’m thinking it wasn’t reported because either the parents,Josh or Jana have kept that quiet.

Sexual abuse survivor and namesake of Erin’s Law met with Duggar family members in 2013 to talk about sexual abuse prevention and teach 9 of the children about safe and unsafe touches.

Interesting that Michelle and Jim Bob are quoted in her book, stating that God set Erin free after she opened up, and that the book will ‘help millions’. The book is called *An Unimaginable Act.

Very interesting quote from the article:
