Duggars in the news.

Actually, just did some reading. I didn’t realize that the Coogan accounts were only in California. Protections for child actors are by state. It looks like kid actors, especially in reality shows, have no protections at all in a lot of states.

Didn’t see specifically for Arkansas, but there was an article on how Honey Boo Boo’s wages in Georgia were all given to her mother.

So, probably no escape money for the Duggar kids. Sad.

I don’t have quotes - but this is my understanding. A child in a reality show is different from a child actor in a scripted show. I believe TLC pays one check to Jim Bob and Michelle - the 19 Kuds and Counting show credits show just their names - and family. You don’t see each child listed seperately in the credits. Also - think about the recent drama with June Shannon of Honey Boo Boo - she had voluntarily set up trust accounts for her 4 girls - but still had access to it and had a dispute with eldest daughter Anna about money in the trust that disappeared. I have never seen anything indicating that TLC pays the children anything. Maybe Josh and Anna were paid seperately for episodes that revolved around them - such as their wedding and births of their children. Maybe Grandma Duggar gets her own check when she appears. But I do not think Jana or Jinger get their own checks.

I think these networks should be morally obliged to set up funds in trust for the kids, even when not legally required.

Here’s some info from a website on minors in show business:

Thank you @rockvillemom . That’s basically what I suspected. I often wonder if that’s one of the reasons behind the explosion of reality tv . . . much cheaper to produce than having to pay those pesky union writers, actors, etc.

I had a feeling, when Jill and Derick moved into JB’s flip house (that was huge and very nice), that they were still tied to her parents financially. In the beginning I thought maybe they’d break away because Derick had a regular job (and education).

Here is some fatherly advice,

Wow. Well obviously that advice worked out well for them.

JimBob’s advice: *Start protecting your family by removing books, magazines, television, or internet that have worldly or sensual content. Replace them with good things like wholesome music, biographies of great Christians, good old-fashioned family fun and games.

While I’m not surprised that TLC is choosing to air their special tomorrow, I really hope they have added some sort of caveat to their final message that was perhaps written after this latest scandal.

As for JimBob - he might as well build a compound. Although, honestly, wouldn’t have worked too well for some of his daughters.

I am wondering, How did that $250 affair guarantee work? What extra’s did it buy and how would they prove that they were due a refund?

I really can’t follow his logic. Thousands (i.e. MOST) of American homes have TV or internet that they would consider “worldly” [does that mean things like broadcast TV, Victoria’s Secret catalogs, Harry Potter, etc?]. Yet MOST American men are not molesting their sisters or signing up for Ashley Madison.

He claimed to provide a household without all these “distractions” and yet still his son went off the track. Why does he think the answer is more restriction?

Surfcity, I found your problem. You’re using logic.

Once you suspend that, it all makes perfect sense

I just see Jim Bob digging in and doubling down. Christian counseling didn’t help Josh as a teen - so let’s do it again - only longer and more intense. Removing worldly distractions was not enough to keep Josh on the straight and narrow - so let’s do more of the same. He has an incredibly narrow viewpoint and nothing will dissuade him.

Basically,JimBob’s world is typical of many with the same religious viewpoint, that the problem is the temptation of the outside world, so the answer is isolating them from temptation. Therapy tries to help someone to deal with the tempations and problems, JimBob wants to blame outside forces, rather than human frailty. It is basically a variation on the old ‘Geraldine’ Flip Wilson routine, the Devil made them do it, so it is the Devil’s fault, not the persons. What is it Hamlet said, that the fault lies not in the stars but in ourselves? The Duggars believe the fault is everything but them.

Interesting point.

There’s a lot about teen behavior today that we were concerned about (mostly sex, too early; we have girls,) but we talked about motivations and choices, decision-making, rather than how one has to strictlyadhere to certain behaviors.

@MichiganGeorgia - since there were very few female accounts, and the vast majority were fake, it points to the high membership fees going to pay for escort services with the men in the dark about this, or simply not caring.

I realize I’m not adding to the conversation. …he’s just gross. He has always looked menacing to me and his parents always gave me the Willies. And that subway guy too? Good grief perhaps our reality star culture is putting some really questionable characters into a spotlight where they don’t belong.

This is true - you can add Honey Boo Boo to that list! (Show was cancelled after it was revealed that mother June Shannon was dating a convicted registered sex offender - who had recently been released from prison - who had molested her own daughter Anna years earlier).

The Duggars have 19 children - with such a large brood - you have to wonder what other issues are going to come up. Are any of them gay? Just statistically - it seems possible. They will never accept that outcome! I’m sure that child will be sent to a Christian prayer/rehab facility.

The TLC special on child molestation is on tonight - not sure if I am watching it. Although I am very curious to see what Jill and Jessa have to say.

I don’t think any new revelations are going to come out of this interview tonight. I think they won’t be speaking of their free will. All the answers will be statements that the parents have discussed with them beforehand.

I’m not sure they will play a major part. How can they “promote education, raise awareness, and advance the conversation,” when they have limited education on the topic, swept it under the rug, and all their talk is how it’s no big deal? Another source says, “shine a light on the challenges faced by those affected by child sexual abuse and raise awareness of where people can turn for help.” Oh, yeah. Not the Duggars.

With their attitude, their inclusion seems like a hurdle to presenting a safe message. No way they educated themselves to the broader issues, any conventional wisdom, in the rush to get it aired.
