How can you become a midwife with only an on-line course? Don’t you have to touch and feel to know how to deliver a baby??
I sure as hell wouldn’t choose a surgeon who only learned from an on-line course.
In addition to the online course, she was required to attend a certain number of out of hospital births. Still, I wouldn’t hire a midwife who had done the academic portion of her training online and the practical part supervised by who knows who.
The whole thing seems sketchy to me-- and I planned a home birth with a midwife, so I’m obviously supportive of midwives and home births.
I looked at MDiv programs for Duke, Chicago and Harvard, and very basic knowledge from a couple of semesters of one language seems more typical. I don’t see any place asking for Hebrew and Greek. I studied Biblical Hebrew 101 at a Lutheran university, then at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. I soon realized that the Lutheran professor, with a PhD in biblical Hebrew, had virtually no active competence in the language.
I studied at a seminary that is part of the consortium of mainline Protestant seminaries in the Chicago area (so yes, U/Chicago was part of it, as well as Garrett at Northwestern). No, they’re not expecting students to speak it fluently, but they do have to have a working knowledge to be able to exegete, which is far beyond what the kind of seminary these Duggar in-laws requires. The mainline Protestant seminaries also require internships as well as CPE (clinical pastoral education) so that students are being exposed to relevant church life and are being supervised by qualified supervisors. How do you do that stuff when you’re taking classes online? It’s just like Jill and the midwifery stuff - how do you learn how to deliver babies, if the only thing you study from is online? It needs to be an active, hands on approach, which Duggar-approved seminaries do not provide.
There’s a bible college near us that offers diplomas and certificates that don’t require any kind of previous college experience, so anyone who has probably graduated high school can attend. They petitioned to the Board of Higher Education (or whatever board certifies colleges) to be called a university because no one was respecting these diplomas or certificates when these students ‘graduated’, and it was difficult for its students to get student loans through traditional four-year college resources. So sorry - you’re a vocational school, not a college or university. The diplomas and certificates they offer do not require any Greek or Hebrew. I’m sure these students are told exactly what certain Scripture passages mean, instead of being encouraged to do an exegesis of their own, which is what is encouraged at real seminaries. I don’t require my pastor to be able to speak Greek or Hebrew, but they’d darned better be able to understand it.
So I just checked with my Lutheran pastor friend and she said Greek and Hebrew are still required for M.Divs. But he Roman Catholic M.Div. students are not required to take it anymore.

Well now I feel like a tabloid, but I have heard it from a reputable source in the Rockford area, that Josh is AWOL… I know we’ve heard it before from the tabloids, but the source I have knows a lot of pastors in the Rockford area… it’s not that big, and they all seem to know that it’s common knowledge.

We have a relative who went to a non mainstream seminary. He did the equivalent of a Go Fund Me, sending out letters to the entire family explaining his budget and that he hoped we’d contribute. Let’s see, it’s been a dozen years since he married that cousin and he’s still never spoken a word to us.
There are lots of “pastors” out there with limited skills training, no real Div program. Lots of shop front churches. It’s no excuse, but it’s what Ben sees as admirable.
He hasn’t been ‘attending meetings’.
I remember when I looked at the program, meeting attendance was required.
Ben is SO young. I mean, he’s 20! He seems like a nice young man, but to be a father, a tv figure - when you are barely out of your teens…
Interesting @teriwtt - he should receive no special priviledges - it’s not a jail - they are all there for similar reasons - face the music.

Wow, such restrictive parents but they think it’s “ok” to jump on a small plane for a 4 hour ride to a football game for a date???
Well, with a chaperone. I’m happy for her - going to a college football game is such a normal activity.
