@clueless96 yes but it’s need-aware
@Bluebrry I’m in similar situation. Waiting for Rice, Brown and Penn. Duke today is making me feel more nervous about the Ivies, each with 8% and 10% acceptance rate. But I really hope the best for both of us next Thursday!
BTW, so you know when does Rice release their decision?
Did not think I was going to be accepted and dreaded looking at the letter, but I finally did and I was accepted!!!
@darcybee but my EFC is way off what I can/had planned to pay.
rejected
@darcybee While you get the full ride, does it include campus working and loan? Or all awards are grants?
Accepted:
-no likely letter
-4.0 UW 4.86 W
-2110/31 (weak spot)
-non-profit that seeks to end juvenile investigative torture
-varsity swim 2 years, jv golf 2
-no legacies, not 1G
-speech and debate national finalist nat. extempt
-essay on my pull between traditional, Chinese male expectations and the empowerment of women in my community, coupled with the impetus to starting non-profit
I’m really not sure why I got in, considering my test scores. However, I’m so grateful that I’ve been given this opportunity and I wish everyone, both admitted and not, a prosperous college journey. As always, the colleges DOES NOT DEFINE YOU. See you at duke
@Canoon yes, all awards are need-based grant + 10k merit scholarship.
@Princetonian2020 - I can feel your enthusiasm! Good for your, congrats. Best school all around. Did you post your stats in the EA thread for Princeton?
Family member (URM) rejected yesterday with straight A’s, 35 ACT, perfect 5’s on every AP subject test, and Great EC’s (did everything shy of curing a major disease or solving the Middle East conflicts). This is a brutal process. Congrats to all who got in and to those who didn’t, hang in there.
Is there any group for admits?
S accepted (yay)
For future applicants: He did receive BSAI, but much later than most reported on this site.
AA applicant from Alabama
Rejected and then loved watching Duke LOSE in the NCAA the same day. See, we all can find our silver lining.
@darcybee That is great. Good luck in next four years in Duke.
rejected. only one or two kids get in from my school every year (ED only) and I got accepted to Stanford so it’s okay
@Canoon thank you!
I got in!!! Totally shocked. I didn’t expect this for a moment.
Here are my stats:
-SAT 2170 (770 CR, 740 WR, 660 M; 800 Lit, 650 Math I)/ACT 32
-UW 3.75, W 4.6, 9/198
-I do a lot of LGBT activism (started a GSA, intern at a nonprofit, enacted some policy changes at my school, received an award at local Pride)
-Also student chair of a literacy nonprofit, student director of a capella group, and lots more (minor journalism/chorus/theatre stuff)
-Essays were strong, I think. Common App was about LGBT activism. I didn’t get an interview, so instead of submitting an additional rec I submitted an extra essay, about my involvement in theatre.
-My supplement was kind of edgy. I don’t think I’d take the risk if I did it again. It was pretty much a diversity question, specifically calling out gender identity/sexuality, so I wrote about how people constantly define me by my presumed sexuality and how I’ve found community/my identity way more in theatre, writing, etc than in what I check off on a census.
-Strong recs - one was a 10/10. Counselor barely knew me though
-Pretty low on demonstrated interest. I didn’t tour because I’d already seen the campus at a Duke TIP camp, and because I didn’t at all expect to get in.
-In-state. I also got pretty much zero aid (just $7000 in loans and work study), so I probably won’t actually be able to go
-Accepted: Davidson (Belk semifinalist), Wake Forest, Chapel Hill (and Honors College), Oxford College at Emory
-Waitlisted: Johns Hopkins (decided not to apply halfway through and never actually submitted the writing supplements)
-Waiting to hear on Brown, Columbia, and Emory
Congrats to everyone else in Duke 2020!! I have absolutely no clue how I got in with my numbers, but let me be an example to future applicants that even in a year of record low acceptance rate, Duke doesn’t just look at the numbers. Guess they saw something in me.
I’d be happy to answer questions/let people read my essays if anyone’s interested!
Wow @BakerStBarricade I had even lower stats than you but was also super involved in LGBT activism (also started a GSA and some other cool stuff.) It’s awesome seeing someone with the same passion! Congratulations! Hopefully you do attend, find some scholarships and try having them reconsider aid!
Does anyone know roughly how many students are waitlisted?
Accepted students: you guys should get on Duke2020 facebook page, its lit
