I think you made a good choice taking Stats. In my opinion, AP Stats was much more fun than AB Calc that I’m taking right now. Plus you already have the “Calc” label on your transcript.
Do any of you guys know about the Project Lead the Way program? I took the class cause I was told it “college-level” and because it is dual enrollment. Duke is an “affiliate school” for the program. I chose to take the Project Lead the Way class over AP Environmental Science because it is considered a “easy” AP at my school and it doesn’t relate to my major. If you know about the program, would you say it was worth it? Thanks!
@Mango920452 Ayyyy! I am in a PLTW Biomed track (I take PLTW and IB classes). I wouldn’t say it is worth it; awesome labs, interesting science, BUT these classes, at least at my school, are unweighted plus many schools have never heard of them, in general. I would have taken APES if I had been you haha. Seriously messed up my schedule tbh. Only 6 APs and 4 IB classes.
@anxiousenior1 Duke is one of the few “affiliate schools” for PLTW and my regional admissions counselor said they know about PLTW, so I’m hoping it helps us. I only have 8 AP’s but my school offers only 13, and I’m taking Physics 1 and Macro and Microeconomics online, though they’ll only show up on my final transcript . Hopefully my counselor mentioned those on my her counselor form.
@Mango920452 Yeah, however for me it took at least four emails between me and my admissions officer to definitively confirm that they were a PLTW affiliate, so maybe some officers are more familiar with it than others?
@anxiousenior1 probably. PLTW is definitely quite famous in the Midwest (my region).
@Mango920452 Ahh its a rather new thing on the West Coast, or at least in SoCal. I am in the first class to graduate with PLTW classes so hopefully those classes were worth it and help me go where I want to go, whether it be Duke or another college on my list.
@anxiousenior1 for the amount of work that’s expected in those classes, I sure hope so. My friends in APES have nothing to do. I probably should have taken that class instead!
@Mango920452 for my classes, they haven’t been that hard as say AP Bio or Bio HL. I think I would have rather taken one of those instead.
@anxiousenior1 I’d say the work is comparable to “lower level” AP classes like APES, Econ, Human Geo, Psych, but definitely not as hard as “the upper level” AP’s/IB like Bio, Chem, Physics, and Math. Our PLTW teacher used to teach AP Chem and Bio, and said those were harder, but she was the one who encouraged me to take PLTW over APES, unless I was taking APES for class rank, which I don’t really care about.
@Mango920452 mhmm. I get a lot of crap for taking the “soft way” and not taking a full schedule of AP or IB classes. But hopefully if I get into Duke that’ll shut them up hahaha. Which PLTW class are you taking if you don’t mind me asking?
@anxiousenior1 I skipped PBS cause I took AP Bio, and I’m taking HBS and Medical Interventions this year. MI was just added this year to my school, but the other two have been going on for 5+ years. We don’t have the last one in the series, unfortunately.
@Mango920452 Ah I’m in Medical Interventions and Biomedical Innovations this year. HBS was my favorite class; loved the modeling.
@anxiousenior1 I’m really fond of MI. We’re wrapping up with Unit 1, and I’m really into the public health/epidemiology aspect. That’s what I applied as a major for at Duke, well the closest one ( In my opinion, Global Health and International Comparative Studies). Looks like we’ve stolen up a page of this thread talking about PLTW :))
@Mango920452 Same! Wow the EXACT same LOL. Fingers crossed for the both of us!
@anxiousenior1 wow! Did you say both global health and ICS as well? And good luck to both of us as well!
@Mango920452 yep! what a coincidence haha if we do get in we have to meet up irl.
Out of curiosity, what are your guys’ test scores that you sent to Duke? I know CC is probably not the best representative of applicant pool but it’d be cool to see
@Lift35 not so hot unfortunately. 2200 SAT, 760 on USH and 770 on Bio E. Pretty sure I’m near the bottom of the 50th percentile lol
@anxiousenior1 don’t feel bad. I had a 2200 super scored but didn’t do well on subject tests so I couldn’t send it at all. 33 ACT (34E 33M 33R 33S), and I’m an Asian applicant, luckily my GPA is high
